Marvel Confirms Paul Rudd Will Lead Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN

     December 19, 2013

It’s officially official: Paul Rudd is Ant-Man.  After news broke last night that Rudd was in talks to lead Marvel’s Ant-Man, the studio confirmed today that the actor has been set to star in the title role for director Edgar Wright.  Moreover, the press release notes that Rudd is the actor “that Marvel had long ago identified as its first choice to play Ant-Man.” Marvel has been developing Ant-Man with Wright for some time, first announcing the project at Comic-Con alongside Jon Favreau’s first Iron Man film, so it’s nice to hear that Wright and Co. have landed the actor that they first landed upon years ago.  Ant-Man kicks off what’s sure to be a string of Marvel appearances for Rudd, who will very likely be joining his cinematic companions in The Avengers 3.

Wright co-wrote Ant-Man with Joe Cornish and the film will be produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Wright’s longtime producing partner Nira Park.  Filming is set to begin next year in anticipation of a July 31, 2015 release date.  Hit the jump to read the full press release regarding Rudd’s casting, which includes a quote from Feige.

paul-rudd-ant-manHere’s the press release:

Marvel’s “Ant-Man” has found its hero in Paul Rudd, who will star in the new film from director Edgar Wright hitting theaters July 31, 2015!

The casting of Rudd represents the actor that Marvel had long ago identified as its first choice to play Ant-Man, continuing the studio’s desire to cast actors that bring several dimensions to its onscreen heroes.  The film’s plot is being kept under wraps.

“When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”

Rudd brings a diverse background to the role having become one of the industry’s most known actors with a reputation for smart, funny and creative performances.  Rudd can currently be seen in “Anchor Man 2: The Legend Continues,” as well as past roles in “Anchorman,” “This Is 40,” “I Love You, Man,” “Role Models,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Our Idiot Brother,” “Knocked Up,” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” among numerous other films, television shows and primetime animation.

In addition to “Ant-Man,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on May 1, 2015.

    fuck yeah

  • Strong Enough

Wow can you just imagine the comedic lines joss will write if avengers 3 has ant man? i always thought the real reason people loved avengers was because of the comedy. but Paul Rudd bouncing lines off of RDJ in trailers is going to drive people crazy

    • God of Collider

Not as crazy as you get when you go to ladies night at the Chip & Dales but pretty crazy none the less.

      • ed

why do you always appear on threads acting like a jackass? you may want to think about growing up, but I doubt you will.
        I expect a douchey comment in 3, 2…..

  • danny

My boy Rudd is going to fucking owned I just hope it doesn’t tanked at the box office considering the amount of movies coming out that month.

    • YourFriend

Friendly advice : before you start using cuss words to sound cool, learn the appropriate usage of past, present and future tenses. That would greatly enhance the cool factor of cussing and not make you sound like a joke.

      • Lex Walker

You done gone and maked me laughs out loud.

So freaking psyched for this. Marvel makes *comic book movies* – they know what they are, and they deliver. Wonderful escapism at its absolute best. I’m really looking forward to BvS, but for sheer fun, I think nothing really approaches Marvel’s movies. Paul Rudd crushes every time – he’s going to absolutely own this.

    • Agent777

Marvel… has yet to make a comic book movie I would call a good movie. They used to make good comics, but they are a painted lady of the night now.

      • Jim

        Nobody thinks that.

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

Paul Rudd’s ant-man superpower is his ability to make audiences dissapear
    This gonna bomb so bad

Go back to sipping that hot chocolate, Pajama Boy.

  • The Flobbit

I have to say this is an excellent casting decision. I just hope that they can keep the tone fun and cool while bringing some real heart and spectacle. Also, Wright described this as a heist film, which gives me no end of rejoicing!

    • RiddleThemThis

That’s what they’ve done every time. Its not like their going to change the formula now.

      • The Flobbit

Yeah, I guess. What the Marvel films lack is gravity. They lack stakes; I mean, Iron man 3 and Thor 2 were fun rides, but they were predictable as hell. But I’m hoping that Ant-Man won’t even try – that it will just be a blast of escapism fun.

      • Panther2017

IM3 had gravity until the Mandarin ruse was revealed, after that it was as tense as an episode of the A-Team.

      • Lex Walker

So you’re saying it was a masterpiece of thrills and suspense? I don’t get your point.

  • Yellow Jacket

AWESOME! This is gonna help wash out the bad taste of Batfleck.
    Go Mr. Pym!

    • bidi

don’t they kinda look alike in that banner picture? weird…

    • Daniel Ronczkowski

We don’t know for sure he will be Pym.

  • LL

Edgar Wright and Paul Rudd is a great combination. Can’t wait for the Comic Con panel.

  • Pingback: Paul Rudd to play Ant-Man in the Edgar Wright directed Marvel Studios film! UPDATED with confirmation from Marvel | Don't Forget A Towel()

  • eternalozzie

this is a great decision …. it makes me less bitter about the whole Ultron without Pym thing.

    • Lex Walker

I’m still not convinced Pym won’t have a hand in it. They’ve cast Rudd early enough that he can easily have a cameo in Avengers 2 in a way that might be instrumental to making Ultron self-aware or evil.

      • Hank Pym

But he’s not Hank Pym, he’s Scott Lang. Too bad, I thought a Paul Rudd beating his wife would be comedic gold.

      • Daniel Ronczkowski

        That hasn’t been confirmed.

      • Lex Walker

Yeah, I keep seeing that in comments sections, but I’ve never seen an actual press release or interview that says that.

      • eternalozzie

I guess I just assumed it was Pym and not Lang … The Marvel movies are good stories for the most part with good actors but they are using the comic books for toilet paper.

I like Rudd and hope he nails it. Although I shutter to think he will do to Ant Man what Rogen did to Green Hornet…let’s just hope that’s not the case.

    • Daniel Ronczkowski

Yeah the difference being Rogen wrote hornet right? I am not crapping on his writing style, Hornet just wasn’t GOOD, look at This is the End which he wrote.
But Rudd ISN’T writting this movie so ya.

  • Anthonyg1500

Its hilarious how when marvel casts someone people rejoice and when DC does people want to riot

  • James

I really want to like this casting choice, but I don’t. Hopefully Rudd and Wright prove me wrong.

  • rippy

All those saying “Pym is an asshole in the comics, not a comedic lead!!!” you’re absolutely right. Paul Rudd has NO idea how to act like an asshole in movies. None whatsoever.

    • Natticus

Agreed. I think this is Marvel admitting that they can’t build a tentpole out of a guy whose main defining characteristics are spousal abuse and penis envy.

    • Lex Walker

My mind immediately went to Role Models. If he can reproduce that, but to like a degree of 100, he’ll be amazing.

    • doctor_robot

      and you know this how?

      • Lex Walker

        (you missed the sarcasm)

    • ska7triumph

None of you have seen Rudd in early indies – even now in PRINCE AVALANCHE – or seen him on stage. The dude can get rude, douchey and horrible if he wants, and if this Hank Pym is written as such. He’s a trained actor not just a comedian. Please do a little research on the man before commenting. Unless you’re purposely knee-jerking.

  • Natticus

I hope this means they’re going to play down the “Hank Pym is a wife-beating douchebag” angle. The Marvel Movie universe seems to draw heavily from the Ultimate Universe (Samuel L. Fury, interpretations of Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Cap, and it looks like the Triskelion will be in “Winter Soldier”). And in the Ultimate Universe especially, Pym was a sniveling, conniving, abusive piece of shit. Paul Rudd’s too damn likeable for that.

  • doctor_robot

i think this will work very well. rudd is pretty awesome.

  • Blurb

Likeable actors are extremely important for asshole roles. Think about Brian Cranston in BB.

  • Colin Christian

Perfect casting. Well done to everyone involved, this flick will rock.

  • Snicks

I’ve tried watching Paul Rudd comedies. Not much funny in them, instead there is often uncomfortable, awkward attempts. So the writers and director should keep a reign on Rudd’s attempts. Just feed him lines (no add libbing by him) and make him act. It could work, that way.

  • brett1368

Very, very cool casting! I am psyched for this movie!
