Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood to Lead WESTWORLD for HBO

     July 22, 2014

TV’s the place to be!  That’s what award-winning movie actors are starting to learn thanks to the critical and financial success of shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones and True Detective.  The cable network’s latest series adaptation tackles Westworld, writer-director Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi movie that starred Yul Brynner as a malfunctioning Wild West robot at a futuristic adult amusement park.  While HBO could certainly have gone bonkers with a premise like that, their first casting announcements come with some gravitas.  Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins and Golden Globe-nominated Evan Rachel Wood have been locked in as series leads.  Hit the jump for more.

westworld-posterAs Film Divider reports, Hopkins and Rachel Wood will star in HBO’s Westworld, which now has a green light for its pilot.  Developed by J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan, with writer Lisa Joy Nolan and producer Jerry Weintraub also involved, this new version of Westworld is described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.”  That being said, let’s take a look at some character descriptions for both Hopkins and Rachel Wood.

Hopkins will play, “Dr. Ford, the uncompromising creator of the park and conductor of the creations inside it, and he views the robots as utterly inhuman, little more than livestock. In the wider context of the show, he’s looking like a complex kind of ‘big bad’.”  His part’s already been described as equal parts Dr. Moreau, Blade Runner’s Dr. Tyrell, and Jurassic Park’s John Hammond.  However, though his role is a recurring one, Hopkins is not the main character.

Enter Rachel Wood.  Her character “Dolores is created to be a sassy farm girl; the beautiful girl next door type who has no idea that the life she’s living is a lie. She’s essentially a slave to the guests of the park but has no idea [of her true nature.]”  In talks to star opposite her in another lead role is James Marsden, who would be playing “Flood, your classic Western hero. He’s all about adventure and romance; his two pursuits in life are the open plains and, as I’m sure you guessed, the lovely Dolores Abernathy.”  His main job at the theme park is to fall victim to the visiting wannabe gunslingers, but a side effect of both robots’ programming is that Dolores is meant to shack up with one of the guests despite Flood’s advances and her own desires.  However the rest of the casting shakes out, Westworld certainly seems like a project to keep an eye on, especially if it ends up landing a series order.
