When you look at his filmography, Anthony Hopkins usually plays gentle and distinguished elderly gentleman. Even when his character is devious like in "Fracture" and to a lesser extent "The Edge", you still hold Hopkins in high esteem. And yet the one role he'll be remembered for is an eloquent psychologist who eats people. It's a little difficult to reconcile the two.
Hopkins joining the cast of "Thor" as Odin certainly plays into the respectability he brings to his roles. The eating people thing probably won't be one of Odin's character traits but I'll keep my fingers crossed. Whether you like your Norse gods with cannibalism or without, hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Hopkins plays the father of Thor and Loki, played by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, respectively. I'm sure you can see the family resemblance. In addition to my hope for cannibalism, I want to see a scene where Odin is driving a car made out of lightning and in the back seat are Thor and Loki with one complaining that the other has breached the border of his "side" of the backseat.
That probably won't happen since the story is about Thor's reckless actions reigniting an ancient war for which his father banishes him to Earth to live among humans. He then learns the meaning of heroism when he stands tall as his arch enemy Lokie sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Thor then hits things with a giant hammer.
"Thor" is slated to hit theaters on May 20th, 2011.
