Most child actors fail to overcome the chronic, debilitating condition of becoming less and less child-like. Similarly, many siblings of more famous performers struggle to be taken even a little bit seriously. Fortunately, two shining exceptions to the rule are set to team up and show us that it’s not all marijuana-fuelled car crashes and uncomfortable SNL hoe-downs. Former pint-sized dynamo Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) and current indie it-girl Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) were first linked to the drama Very Good Girls in May; Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) is now in talks to join them. The directorial debut of Naomi Foner (writer of Losing Isaiah) will spin the tale of two lifelong friends (Fanning and Olsen) who, following high-school graduation, vow to lose their virginity before the summer ends; naturally, both end up falling for Yelchin, which threatens to irreparably damage their friendship.

Hit the jump for more on Very Good Girls and casting news on the hotly anticipated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host.

naomi-foner-imageVery Good Girls, which is set to film in New York this coming June, will be the first movie made under a recently inked development/financing deal between Groundswell Productions and Herrick Entertainment. Here’s how writer-director Foner described her project to Deadline:

“The film deals with female sexuality and friendship in a way we haven’t seen before. These girls will be stunning young women in a couple of years, but they’ve struggled through high school with only each other. Most of us have been there. This is the summer where they finally get to touch real life.”

Presumably, “real life” is NOT the Yelchin-character’s nickname for his penis.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Chandler Canterbury (Knowing) and Boyd Holbrook (Milk) are close to coming aboard the big-screen adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s The Host. The book involves a race of aliens known as Souls invading Earth by possessing people and snuffing out their essences. One poor Soul, known as Wanderer, makes the mistake of trying to invade 20-year-old Melanie Stryder (Hanna’s Saoirse Ronan), whose trademark Meyer angst is far too potent for a mere alien consciousness to consume. As Melanie’s memories and emotions begin to bleed through, Wanderer is driven to seek out her host’s family and friends, who happen to be mounting an underground resistance against their attackers.

The Host is being written and directed by Andrew Niccol (In Time). It will co-star William Hurt as Melanie’s uncle, soon-to-be tween obsession Max Irons (Red Riding Hood) as Melanie’s beau, and Jake Abel (I Am Number Four) as other “male lead” Ian O’Shea. 13-year-old Canterbury will play Melanie’s younger brother Jamie, while Holbrook will take on the role of O’Shea’s hot-headed older brother Kyle.  Inglourious BasterdsDiane Kruger is also in talks to play an alien called Seeker.  The Host is currently set to be released by Open Road Films on March 29, 2013.
