James Wan's Aquaman was a surprise superhero hit to close out 2018 for Warner Bros. Now that it's the highest-grossing DC Comics movie in existence, a sequel is a guaranteed certainty. But until today, we hadn't heard anything concrete about talent being attached to the follow-up film. Odder still, we did hear news about The Trench, a spinoff film that was in the works and which would dive into the horror genre to further explore the deeps and the monsters that live there. That picture is expected to be a lower-budget one-off that won't have the core Aquaman cast involved, except for maybe a small appearance to set things up or tie them off. So while we've yet to hear official confirmation that Jason Momoa and Amber Heard will be back for Aquaman 2we do know someone else who will return.

The Wrap reports that Aquaman co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will be back to pen the sequel. Johnson-McGoldrick is a familiar name in horror circles and in Wan's own sphere of influence. Over the last 10 years, the screenwriter has written Orphan, Red Riding Hood, and co-written Wrath of the Titans, as well as TV series like Mob City and The Walking DeadBut the bigger titles are yet to come, thanks in part to Johnson-McGoldrick co-writing The Conjuring 2 with Wan and Chad and Carey Hayes.

And the news that he'll be back on Aquaman 2 is just the latest big-picture project for the screenwriter. Also on deck are horror features The Conjuring 3, Nightmare on Elm Street and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, along with the latest attempt at a Dungeons & Dragons script. Few of those films have hard release dates, including Aquaman 2, so Johnson-McGoldrick will likely be busy writing for the next few years while we wait to hear more on all of these highly anticipated projects.
