DC Entertainment Could Be Trying to Get AQUAMAN to Swim Towards the Big Screen

     November 27, 2013

Aquaman gets a bit of a bad rap among DC’s top tier superheroes.  If you consider the DC Comics superheoes as stand-ins for Greek gods with Superman being Zeus, Batman being Hades, The Flash being Hermes, etc., then Aquaman is Poseidon.  And no one mocks Poseidon.  But since Aquaman has a silly costume and most people think his main ability is talking with marine life, he gets mocked (also, as Injustice: Gods Among Us proved, being able to control underwater creatures has its advantages).  However, DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns isn’t giving up on the underwater hero.  “He’s a priority character for the company,” says Johns.  Warner Bros. has already made that clear by trying to give him a TV show (the pilot wasn’t picked up) and is currently planning to release a direct-to-DVD animated feature.

Hit the jump for more on DC’s plans and the obstacles an Aquaman movie faces.

aquaman-comic-book-coverSpeaking to Variety, Johns explained the character’s positive aspects:

“There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the most well-known characters among super-heroes, and in popular culture,” said Johns. The ocean setting, he suggested, should work to a writer’s advantage. “We are finding new areas in the ocean every day. It’s as alien as going to outer space,” he said.

Of course, there isn’t anything official regarding an Aquaman feature film, but DC Comics is pushing the character hard.

According to Variety:

In 2009 and 2010, Johns turned a large spotlight on Mera, Aquaman’s wife, giving her more presence and personality than she’s had in decades. “What I wanted to do was establish Mera alongside Green Lantern and The Flash in a very big way,” Johns explained, noting that he derived inspiration from the Queen Gorgo character in the 2007 Zack Snyder movie, “300.” Rather than playing up Aquaman’s Atlantis connections, Johns said he deliberately focused on developing his personality, supporting cast and enemies like Black Manta and the Ocean Master.

So despite Aquaman’s boring origin story which boils down to being raised in Atlantis, DC is checking off the boxes of a major love-interest and clearly defined villains.  Also, he’s been given a “gritty” edge with long hair, beard, and harpoon hand.  Comics Alliance does a good job of breaking down the character’s strengths and weaknesses, and personally I see his blandness as a positive.  Comics fans might not have much love for Aquaman, but screenwriters would have a lot of free reign because they only have to hit a few checkmarks for a general audience: He lives under the sea, can talk to sea creatures.  Go nuts.

Obviously, this is all part of Warner Bros. strategy to get more DC superheroes on the big screen.  Aquaman may be a joke, but honestly, so is the way the studio is scrambling to come up with a game plan.  At least Aquaman has the freedom his other Justice League members lack.

I had never seen the trailer before. That was hilariously awful.

  • Marineboy

I’m disappointed we haven’t heard any more about the proposed Namor movie…or, come to think of it, the Silver Surfer one too. Aquaman I suppose has been more badass in recent years – if this happens, would there be room for Namor too?

    • Nerdgasm

Those honestly were just rumors. There has never been any proposed movies for either character. it was just fanboys getting boners and putting words, all the words out in the interwebs and people took it too far. All an actor or producer needs to say is “Yeah we are thinking about it” and people automatically think that movies are green lit or being written and it’s just not the case. And this , ofcourse being DC and not Marvel where Namor and SS reside, it’s not for Aquaman to make room but Guardians of the Galaxy next year that will show Marvel that audiences want the weird shit on the big screen. Plus I wouldn’t hold your breath for SS being as Fox owns him and have never said anything about a solo outing for the galactic crusader.

I came across a copy of Spectacular Spiderman from 1979 with Stan Lee saying how they were looking into making a Silver Surfer movie, and how the technology used was going to be state of the art…I’d love to see the concept art from the 70′s, bet it put FF2′s rendering of Norin Radd to shame

  • To Be Continued

I’ve said this many times, the ocean setting could provide a much needed change in the superhero-cinematic area. This movie could be visually stunning if done right. There’s no doubt in my mind that an Aquaman movie could be awesome.

  • Idris Elba

Idris Elba needs to play Aquaman’s talking dolphin who advises Aquaman on the business of aquatic real estate.

  • Cedhollywood

I would make this a unprecedented version of the king of Atlantis. The formula standard of a super hero movie where he’ll probably have more time on land than water isn’t gonna work for Aquaman. Give him a pompous attitude and a rogue element on being a “hero” on the same tune with Namor.

    Awesome article Matt. Hilarious.

  • ISeemToBeAVerb

If DC could only get this done and get it done right!!! But they can’t get their collective $h!t together enough to get Wonder Woman on screen. How can we expect Aquaman? He would have to be a more difficult character to pull off, all things considered.

    • Tom

WB couldn’t even pull off Green Lantern and Green Lantern is a ready made formula for success and WB completely screwed it up.

James Cameron for Aquaman and have Chris Pine or Bradley Cooper in the role.

    • axalon

Yeah didn’t J.C. already make Aquaman a couple years ago?

      • Jamesy

I was referring to the Entourage gag, but I do genuinely think Cameron could do something very special with it, with the right effects and story it really could be stunning.

      • pouya

james Cameron wouldn’t come for this project , because he is so busy for his Avatars

    • Batt Damon

James Cameron gave up on making decent movies a long time ago

  • mattinacan

you think aquaman has a bad costume, wait until you get a load of namor’s speedo.

  • tom

Aquaman has tons of potential, he is the King of Atlantis for pete’s sake. Alas, I have zero confidence in WB’s decision making ability. A) They can’t even bring a Wonder Woman movie to the silver screen b) They cast Ben Affleck as Batman. C) They cast Ben Affleck as Batman and uses Kevin Smith to back him up — Kevin Smith, the guy who wrote how Batman peed in his pants on his rewrite of the infamous Batman Year One story.

    • Jack le Critic

Tons of potential…but a lame name for this era. Man of Water anyone? :s

      • pwnednoob

The Water Knight? and the sequel: The Water Knight Splashes.

  • tom

The Aquaman costume designed by Craig Hamilton in his 1988 mini-series is a much better costume than the classic underoos one DC Comics has him in.

  • EntourageKnows

get vincent chase and james cameron

    • Tom

      Success in box office guaranteed!

  • Gerardo Mayordomo

Before the Dark Times, i mean before Ben Affleck was announced as Batman, i saw a Photoshop of possible actors for Justice League and Gerard Butler was Aquaman, i never thought of him for the role but he looked right, besides the guy loves water sports and he gave us very badass king already, if someone can take away the corny from Aquaman is this guy. What do you guys think?

  • Arturo Rey Marítimo

The only guys making good use of this characters are the teams behind the direct to video animated movies, on Justice League: Flashpoint, Aquaman is actually one of the villains an he is ruthless and cool. And Wonder Woman the Movie was a perfect story for the classic Diana. Warner should take some pointers from this guys.

    • Guy Smiley

You seem to be forgetting Aquaman on the JL/JLU animated series, which was based on the Peter David reboot (which was also pretty good) pictured above. He was one of the best characters on the shows, and I’m sorry they didn’t use him more. They made him into a total badass!

Making a movie with that Aquaman would have actual potential, but he probably wouldn’t be as recognized as the shorter-haired guy in the orange shirt that people remember from Super Friends. Which means they’ll probably go with the latter.

  • TedSallis

FINALLY a character they can fuck up and nobody will care.

  • Faptain America

For the last time Internet, it’s “free rein” not “free reign”! Kings have a reign. Horses have reins. When you give a horse “free rein”, you let the reins loose or let them go, so the horse can run free.
“Take the reins” – to take control
    “Rein in” – to control
“Chaos reigns” – chaos is king

    Got it?
