We got some solid reports claiming that Jason Momoa was set to take the role of Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice back in June, but now that Warner Bros. has confirmed it via that enormous release date announcement, Momoa himself is finally allowed to talk about it.

While at Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta, Momoa discussed the super secretive casting process, why he’s so pumped to take on the role and how he’s prepping for the 2018 Aquaman solo movie.  On top of that, Momoa also confirm that the character will appear in the first Justice League movie.  Hit the jump for more.

Via ComicBook.com, Momoa had this to say about the intense level of secrecy that came with accepting the role:

“Listen, I was asked to play it.  You know, you audition and stuff like that, but the fact is you’ve just got to keep it quiet.  You know what I mean, I was just trying to respect Warner Bros. and everyone’s wishes.  I’m really, really happy that I don’t have to be quiet anymore, because that’s really hard for me.”

Momoa also joked that all the southern food he was busy eating will “wreak hell on my Aquaman figure.”  Not that Momoa isn’t in prime shape at the moment, but if he wants to get even fitter, he should have no problem because apparently, he’s got about two years to do it.  Here’s what Momoa had to say about the Aquaman shooting schedule:

“I don’t even know when we’re shooting yet, but it will be like 2016 or 2017, so there’s plenty of time.”

Back when we first got word that Momoa would be our Aquaman, it was also reported that his role in Batman v Superman would set him up for a bigger part in the Justice League movie.  When Warner Bros. unveiled those release dates, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Amy Adams were the only ones officially attached to Justice League Part One.  However, based on what Momoa said at Walker Stalker Con, it seems as though Aquaman will be in the mix as well:

“I know the Justice League will come first.  That’s really what we’re going to focus on.  I’m not sure if it will be [set] prior to Justice League or post.  I don’t know too much about it.  It will probably be where he came from.  It will probably be his whole origin story I would think … I mean I don’t even want to get quoted on this s***.  So I know we’re going to do Justice League first.”

When asked about the possibility of a little romance for Aquaman, Momoa responded with the following:

“I don’t think there will be a romance any time soon in Justice League.  I think we’re going to be kicking some ass.  But I don’t know for sure, because there’s no script yet.”

A post-Justice League narrative, an origin story, a love interest – who really knows?  As Momoa said, there’s no Aquaman script yet.  Odds are, they’ve had some discussions because what’s going down in Batman v Superman has got to affect what happens in Justice League Part One, but if there’s no script, a lot can change regardless of what Momoa says now.

When pressed for more information, Momoa stated that he doesn’t know who’s directing the Aquaman movie and also added:

“I really wish I could say something, but I don’t even know … I found out some of the characters that are in Justice League that are casted that I didn’t know.  So you found out when I found out.  And that stuff is pretty tight-lipped so I don’t have anything to give.”

However, what Momoa does know is what drew him to the role and how his real life experiences can help him tap into the character.  Momoa noted that he studied marine biology in school and that he should be able to pull from his experience swimming with dolphins, but he seems most excited about the overlap between the character and his Polynesian roots.

“The greatest thing for me is that Polynesians, our gods, Kahoali, Maui, all these water gods, so it’s really cool and a honor to be playing a [water] character.  And there’s not too many brown superheroes, so I’m really looking forward to representing the Polynesians, the natives.”

Momoa also added:

“My family are some of the greatest water men on earth.  I’m not, but I’m going to go train with them.  But it’s really an honor just being a Polynesian.  And water is the most important thing in this world and we all know it.  It’s cool be a part of DC’s universe.  I’m really excited to be with Warner Bros., and hopefully everyone likes it.  And Zack Snyder’s a genius, so I’m really excited to be hanging out with him.”

We can expect our first glimpse of Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016.  Justice League Part One is due on November 17, 2017 after which we’ll get the Aquaman solo movie on July 27, 2018.
