Remember when the tiny budgeted Paranormal Activity hit theaters in 2007 and was a box office smash? And remember when writer/director Oren Peli made his follow-up film, Area 51? You’d be forgiven for forgetting about the second part, because while Area 51 was shot in 2008, it’s been sitting on the shelf ever since…until now.

Yes, Paramount Insurge announced today that Area 51 is finally being released next month, but its theatrical engagement will be severely limited. The sci-fi horror pic will debut exclusively in Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas on Friday, May 15th and will only run through Sunday, May 17th, with one showtime daily. Additionally, the pic will be available on VOD and all digital platforms on May 15th.

Anticipation was incredibly high for the found footage pic given Paranormal Activity’s success, but it sat on the shelf for years and years, with promises that it would see the light of day eventually. Somewhat tellingly, Peli hasn’t directed anything since, though he has remained involved in the Paranormal Activity franchise as a producer.

Co-written by Peli and Christopher Denham and directed by Peli, the film follows Reid, who has always been obsessed with UFOs. While on a weekend trip to Vegas, he convinces two friends to join him on a mission to break into Area 51, where they find terrifying proof of alien presence. The film stars Reid Warner, Jamel King, Ben Rovner and Jelena Nik.

Paramount Insurage also announced that the found footage comedy Drunk Wedding will play exclusively in Alamo Drafthouse theaters the following weekend, Friday May 22nd, with a VOD release set for May 22nd as well.
