The first trailer and poster for Ben Affleck‘s Argo has gone online. The film, based on a true story, centers on a CIA agent (Affleck) who attempts to rescue six Americans trapped in the home of the Canadian embassador during the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The rescue mission was to go in under the auspices of filming a science fiction movie entitled “Argo”. The trailer makes the movie look like Ocean’s Eleven combined with a tense historical thriller. I really like what I’m seeing from the trailer, and there’s a good chance Affleck could 3-for-3 in his successful directing career.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. The film also stars Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Kerry Bishe, and Alan Arkin. Argo opens October 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Argo:
Based on true events, “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis—the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Im sold on anything he directs after seeing The Town…flawless movie.
patl, have you seen Gone Baby Gone? It’s even better.
Gone Baby Gone was amazing. The Town was really good, though.
the one big flaw in “the town” was that lame gun fight at the end
He is a great director for sure. I think Gone Baby Gone was better, though. Everything about The Town was great…until the ending. Having his character escape and make it to greener pastures was a copout. It would’ve been WAY more impactful if he died after giving the money to the girl. That’s the difference to me. In Gone Baby Gone, he had the character make the tough choice and he paid for it (lost his fiancee, Morgan Freeman went to jail, etc).
I’m definitely down for this movie, though!
Looks like another hit. It’ll be interesting to see if he can make a good movie outside of a Boston-themed crime drama. Makes me optimistic for him directing The Stand!
Surreal that Ben Affleck is one of the few directors creating engaging adult most importantly original content in Hollywood. If he can handle the light tonal shift in what looks like the second act this could be interesting.
The Awesome part about that is that Affleck totally knows it too. He makes fun of the fact that directors in Hollywood act like big shots and don’t actually do much of anything. So true.
Amazing concept…true or false & with Affleck involved…I’m sold.
Why hasn’t Ben Affleck always directed himself? He seems to give his best performances in the movies he directed. Granted, he didn’t act in Gone Baby Gone, but if he did, I’m sure he would be better in it than just about anything else he’s done.
He was pretty good in Chasing Amy Hollywoodland, and Good Will Hunting. I think he had a run of bad films in general.
He’s been an amazing director.
I know he’s been good in other stuff. It was a joke. I do agree though that Hollywoodland was a good performance of his.
I was seriously expecting another Town to be honest. This looks cool, like an unique hybrid of Ocean’s, Catch Me If You Can, Syriana and Munich. It feels like there should be more stars in it though.
Doesn’t look as good as The Town, but looks pretty decent
Impressive how no one yet mentions the elephant in the room and that’s that people of color rarely get opportunties in Hollywood to play lead roles. It is factually proven that nonwhites do not get anyone near the kind of oppertunties that whites do.
In this case, Affleck is playing real life Hispanic American Antonio Mendez. It’s another sick case of Hollywood denying chances to people of color. A Hispanic or Latino American actor could’ve been given a great chance as a lead in a major Hollywood film but now it’s gone.
I will not be supporting this movie.
Jason, I agree. It’s actually really annoying. It’s the same thing with the live-action Akira film that Warner wanted to make, the studio only wanted to make an all white cast when in reality they’re suppose to be Japanese. The amount of opportunities white people get never ceases to amaze me, they have it way easier than Non-Whites. And if you can’t see that you are close-minded and ignorant. oh and don’t even get me started on the Hunger Games. Don’t get me wrong Jennifer Lawrence did an excellent job, but most of the cast was suppose to be of colour. The people that played Rue, Thresh, and Cinna in the movie were even disrespected because they weren’t white, when the book clearly stated they were of colour. I’m not even gonna lie the movie does look good, so i will check it out. Shit happens but we need to stop discriminating, everyone should be treated as equals regardless of colour.

Nobody mentioned it because nobody cares about that other then you and film nerd.
WE DON’T CARE!
I will be supporting this movie.
Exactly!
You are aboslute scum, James Coughlin. Absolute scum.
Jason, Did you NOT see how many Middle Eastern/ Iranian people were in this film??
I can agree with your concern with Hollywood’s discrimination, but to accuse THIS film of it isn’t a strong argument at all.
I’m sure the reason why Mr. Affleck was the lead, as apposed to a Hispanic American, is because he was set to Direct the film and ended up really enjoying the challenge of the character. NOT because of his race.
CRANSTON!!!
Cranston is the real deal, finally gets good billing in what will be an awesome movie.
PHILLIP BAKER HALL goddamn now i’m excited
I swear to God this racist crap makes me wanna vomit. It’s even sicker that people are defending it.
And yes Mary, THIS film is discriminatory and racist. Wow, Arabs get to play the villains! So progressive!
Dre,
You haven’t seen the movie yet, so how could you possibly know that they will be portrayed as villains?
The ’79 hostage crisis was about the revolution and Iranians (NOT Arabs) trying to over through their OWN government.
So fighting for freedom makes them the villain?
Of course they’re the villains. If the people doing the rescuing are the heroes, than those holding hostages are the villains. That’s just common sense.
Besides it’s already hateful towards Latinos, it really far-fetched to say it’ll be different for Arabs?
Dre, you are being racist yourself by calling Iranians “Arab” they are two completely different ethnic groups who don’t even speak the same language. And discriminatory against Latinos? Do you ever think that perhaps this character is Spanish? Which would mean that he IS WHITE? Ya… Spain is in Europe, and Spanish people are white. Stop trying to create problems where there simply isn’t any.
Nobody has been to Mexico recently. I have Mexicans that look French, Spanish, Moors, German, Red Hair like Canelo the Boxer. So been Affleck could be Mexican. Youncan’t tell until they start talking.
And BTW, there are no Mexican Actors who look exactly like Mendes.
Job discrimination based on Race is illegal. Affleck got the job.
