Rumor: Arnold Schwarzenegger to Play the Villain in AVATAR 2

The Avatar series recently expanded to a quadrilogy plus four novels.  First things first: Avatar 2 is scheduled for December 2016, but it’s never too early to throw ourselves headfirst into the gray ether of the rumor mill.  Sources tell Latino Review that Arnold Schwarzenegger will play a “bad guy human general.”  It makes enough sense.  Schwarzenegger and Cameron made TerminatorTerminator 2,  and True Lies together, and could be looking to reunite.  The evil military man follows from Stephen Lang‘s villain in the first movie, Colonel Quaritch.  Schwarzenegger’s may be the right actor to portray the escalating human threat.

Yet it feels like a stretch.  Cameron built an immersive fantasy universe in Avatar free from distracting big-name stars (all due respect to Sigourney Weaver).  Casting Schwarzenegger takes the sequels in a different direction.  I trust Cameron, so if he wants to cast Schwarzenegger, I can’t wait to see how he does it.  In three years.  We’ll keep you busy with plenty more rumors in the next 39 months.  Hit the jump for more on the sequels.

james-cameron-avatar-2-sequelsCameron plans to shoot Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and the prequel Avatar 4 simultaneously in 2014 with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana returning.  Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno will collaborate with Cameron on the scripts.  Cameron remarked:

“Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience.  In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I’m pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh — all writers I’ve long admired - to join me in completing the films screenplays.”

Are you excited about the direction of the Avatar series?  Can you picture Schwarzenegger stomping around Pandora?

The Avatar movie has been derided in a lot of circles, both popular and critical, but I really felt it was a genuine spectacle. I don’t believe a film before or sense has truly immersed me in a CG environment.

The fact that it won’t be a one-off, however, means the first films weaknesses will need to be overcome. While I believe the films could still be awe-inspiring, they’re going to have to really come through with the story. Cameron has relied on familiar tropes in most of his films. I’m not sure that’ll be enough to sustain the world over 3 films. But here’s to hoping.

As for Schwarzenegger…I’m skeptical if Cameron is just going to go back to the well in the film. Another beefy general? I hope not. If we’re just going to have 3 more films that are nothing more than the English coming to colonize a poorly fleshed out “native” population, I’m not sure I see the point.

It isn’t 2009 anymore, you can stop pretending Avatar is great.

I agree. The first film was fun and built a surprisingly cool world. However, I love Arnold and would give a kidney to see him in the sequel. It doesn’t matter the role, as long as he kicks ass.

Why do people love Arnold Schwarzenegger so much? The guy is an arrogant jerk and a liar. I don’t get it.

      • Kevin

I love his films. I don’t care whatsover about his personal life.

Schwarzenegger as another evil military man is a step in the wrong direction, I think. They’ve got to find a fresh and new place to take this franchise… I don’t think I can stand three more movies that basically tell the same story over again.

  • Bob

I hope this is untrue. Arnold isnt who he once was anymore. He’s pretty much a joke now.

    • axalon

That man has accomplished more by the time he was 30 than most people do in their entire lifetime. Arnold will never be a joke.

“bad guy human general”? So basically they’re recycling the villain from the first film?

  • pinkincide

So has Cameron given away his Malibu mansion to the Native Americans yet? I’m sure he’s working on that. Not like he’s a rampant hypocrite or anything.

Heck yeah. Schwarzenegger has screen presence. He’s a walking icon, and if anyone can get a great performance out of him it’s Cameron, the man who made Schwarzenegger into a superstar.

“Cameron built an immersive fantasy universe in Avatar”

You mean Cameron ripped off a massive amount of material from several different sources to cobble together his fantasy universe in ‘Avatar’. The guy is a hack. His filmography is full of blatant thievery. Shots from ‘Titanic’ are identical to shots from the ‘Titanic’ mini-series that had come out years before. And ‘Avatar’? I could list all the things in it that were stolen from other sources, but I don’t have all day to make a list that long.

    • Kevin

Having similarities to other works but presenting them in an entirely new way is not thievery.

It isn’t similar to pocahontas. It is pocahontas. If you don’t already know this, see: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/04/avatar-pocahontas-in-spac_n_410538.html

        It’s not right.

Dances with Wolves came out before Pocahontas. Neither of them have blue-cat creatures or ride flying dinosaurs. That’s like saying it isn’t right for an action movie to have a retired soldier whose family members are kidnapped.

rumor or not…why should and would we be excited to see another human general as the villain?? We already got a psycho extremist with Gen Qatar in the last one…or has everyone forgotten already? I’d rather see Arnie utilize the CGI techniques and maybe play a warring alien native leader who might or might not have more to do than doing stupid war cries and leading gangs of CGI soldiers…

    • alk

sorry I meant Quaritch. I don’t know where i got qatar…maybe auto correct

That would mean Josh Friedman would write for the character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, after he created Summer Glau’s character Cameron (yes, that’s an homage to James Cameron) in the highly missed tv serie Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
