Arnold Schwarzenegger to Star in Drama CRY MACHO before Doing TERMINATOR Sequel

A few days ago, we reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger was planning to return to the Terminator franchise with Fast Five director Justin Lin at the helm. However, acting robotically on purpose won’t be Schwarzenegger’s first post-governorship gig.  Vulture reports that Schwarzenegger has signed on to star in the drama Cry Macho for director Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer).  The film, based on the novel the late N. Richard Nash (who also wrote the screenplay before he died in 2000), would see Schwarzenegger as “a damaged-goods horse trainer who’s just been ignominiously put out to pasture by his feckless boss. In exchange for some retirement money, the broken — and broke — horseman agrees to kidnap the boss’ 11-year-old son from his rich Mexican ex-wife. Things take an unexpected turn, however, when the ex-wife is all too glad to be rid of her juvenile delinquent.”  Oh, good.  Schwarzenegger will be acting opposite a kid.  Those movies always turn out so well.

Hit the jump for more on Cry Macho and Schwarzenegger’s other projects.

The plan for Cry Macho is to sell the rights at Cannes and start shooting by this summer.  Schwarzenegger was actually attached to the project before he ran for governor and had to drop out.  Now that he’s back on board, original producer Al Ruddy (Million Dollar Baby) will team with District 9 producer and financier Bill Block to get funds for the project.

As for Schwarzenegger, he’s hit the ground running in his bid to return to acting.  I’m still dubious that audiences want him back, but Schwarzengger is clearly convinced that they do.  In addition to Terminator 5 (a film I couldn’t care less about unless it was a total reboot), Schwarzenegger is also developing his own potential (and awful-looking) franchise called The Governator.  He’s also been rumored for roles in With Wings as Eagles, The Last Stand, The Tomb, and sequels to Predator and The Running Man.

Geese, calm down on the Arnold hatred a little.

Goldberg is getting ready to switch to writing for Gawker, if the quality of writing here is any indication. Weak.

Yeah I’m getting quite tired of this author’s consistant negative-tone articles. Give me the facts please, not your biased opinions.

I was hoping they only make another Terminator film if the script was good and that they hopefully conclude the movie series.

When they announced that Helena Bonham Carter was playing the main villain in Terminator: Salvation, I was expecting her to be the Skynet equivalent of the Borg Queen from Star Trek. I was so disappointed in the end when I saw the film and it was a wasted opportunity to have a really iconic and memorable villain in the franchise. They should have had a confrontation between her, Christian Bale and Sam Worthington towards the end like with Picard, Data and the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact’s climax.

Former California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to do more dramas rather than just doing huge action blockbusters because he pigeonholed himself as an actor who just did action movies. He is an underrated actor. So, I hope that he does more dramas, tries to reach his full potential as an actor and tries to win an Oscar.

With that accent, he’s already a full blown character. Imagine ‘Ahnald’ as the dad in “Ordinary People”, or King George in “The Kings Speech”. It doesn’t work! He’s not a dramatic actor. He plays the character that is Arnold Schwarzenegger. It can be in a SciFi movie like Total Recall or a military man in Predator, all of his (good) characters are degrees of himself. Unless you did some sort of meta like JCVD film or put his weird character in a drama that makes sense like The Wrestler did for Rourke, Arnold is going to be Arnold. And I don’t really think thats a bad thing…just don’t expect his movies to take home any oscars that arent for mixing or special effects.

For all of us Matthew’s out there, please STFU on the Arnold hatred sir

Any film with Arnold and a kid pretty much owns any other arbitrary celebrity and kid movie. Who would want to watch say School of Rock, on of the most pointless, boring, failed arbitrary celebrity and kids films ever over Kindergarten Cop? I’ll tell you who, someone who paints pictures with feces all day.
Arnold rocks, and that’s from a Californian who had to have him as governor. People hate on him as Mister Freeze when he was perfect, they were going for a Adam West tone and they nailed it, and he nailed it, and I’ll still watch that over any of the nutured X-Men films.
Does anyone really think Terminator would of been a hit if it didn’t have Arnold? It would of ended up in the 3 dollar bin at Fry’s/

Matt Goldberg, do you ever get laid ? Because your constant bitterness is just apalling. However, Schwarzenegger’s career has always thrived on naysaying.

Well there’s a Myth that Arnold is the greatest action movie star when in truth the vast majority of his films were flops or simply never made much money at all. Only 7 of his 29 movies ever crossed the $100 million mark and only 1 of those 7 ever crossed $200 million. His films are mostly cult flicks with cult following meaning most of them are crap but followed becasue the fans like him no matter how bad or unconvincing a performance he gives. He can’t act past his native Austrian accent, he’s the most unconvincing infiltrator in Terminator due to his huge physique which is way beyond average and the same goes for True Lies where in real terms he’d stand out like a sore thumb in any mission. The list is long but fanboys don’t care, he’s there personal cult God so its not unusual for the average joe or reviewer to ridicule his career, it’s simply an unavoidable joke when you compare him to real actors and real performances that are truly worthy of praise next to his amateur deliveries and one-liners!

You do realize that 20 odd years ago 200 million dollars was alot more than 200 million dollars now? Stupid douche. And his movies are crappy cult films? yeah thats why T2 is one of the greatest movies ever made i guess isn’t it. Oh yeah and predator, that was shit as well! nothing great about that. And you do also realize that his best movies are not cult classics, right? they’re just classics. Everyone knows what they are, not just a small group of fans.
