Netflix in Talks for Another Season of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

It appears that the episodic structure of Arrested Development may not be over.  While creator Mitch Hurwitz has said many times that the new run of episodes on Netflix were meant to serve as Act One of a story that would be completed with Act Two and Act Three in an Arrested Development movie, Bloomberg reports that Netflix is currently in negotiations to make another season of the show.  The news comes from producer Brian Grazer himself, who noted that he and his Imagine Entertainment cohorts are “in conversations with [Netflix] to do another.”  Hit the jump for more.

Though Netflix doesn’t release viewership numbers regarding its content, interest in the new run of episodes was extremely high when they premiered exclusively on the streaming service.  One imagines another season of the show would prove to be quite lucrative for Netflix, and seeing as how Hurwitz has had a great deal of trouble convincing a film studio to make an Arrested Development movie, he might be able to complete the story in an episodic nature through one or two more seasons.

The issue now, though, would be scheduling.  It proved difficult to get the expansive ensemble cast of Arrested Development back together to film season four, which is why Hurwitz was hoping the allure of a feature film salary would allow him to get everyone together for an extended period of time.  Hurwitz made use of green screen in order to film certain scenes of season four, as the entire cast was only together on set for two days of filming.  I’m interested to see how Hurwitz would proceed should he make a fifth season of Arrested Development, as the new string of episodes presented an incredibly complex and puzzle-like story structure.  It looks like we might just get the chance to find out.

Should a season five order occur, Netflix will have renewed  all of its original programming from this year, as House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, and Orange Is the New Black all have second season orders already.

Season 4 was very carefully written to have everything make sense by time all the episodes are finished. Although I love the ensemble nature of the first 3 seasons, I was very impressed with how season 4 was pulled off. However they decide to structure it, I’m excited.

If they can’t get most actors to commit to a working schedule I don’t think I want them to bother. The episodic structure seriously hurt the narrative and the humor.

I was as excited as everyone else for the revival of the show but I was extremely underwhelmed by this season. Was not a fan of the character episodes. Looking back, one of the best parts of the original seasons were the interactions of the characters. At this point, the only reasons a Season 5 would be made is because of money. In hindsight, they should have left the show where it was when it was cancelled. They also could have thought of some new jokes instead of just recycling all the ones that were used in 2004. As you can tell, I was not happy with Season 4 : )

The parallel structure worked for one season, but I don’t think that’s something they can pull off twice. If they can’t raise the budget a bit so the majority of the cast doesn’t see it as a side project, then they shouldn’t do it. Season 4 was great, but if they try to do a season 5 while balancing everyone’s schedules again, it’s not gonna work. They came up with a clever way around it once, and we’re definitely grateful for that. But we all missed what we loved most about seasons 1-3: the Bluths all hanging out together. If season 5 can’t be that, it’s just gonna get old.

    And that’s my input.

If it’s so hard to get everyone together, I wish they would just do 8 twenty-minute episodes instead of fifteen 20-40 minute episodes. Quality over quantity.

Personally I loved what they did with Season 4 and just blue myself over Season 5 rumors.

As a big AD fan i was beyond excited for Season 4. However after watching 3/4 of the season i realized I hated it and never laughed. I actually never finished it ad found the whole episodic thing incredibly stupid. If they had to work around the actors and that’s why they couldn’t of all been together like before then they either should not have done it or done it as a movie. I will not watch another season.
