More TV renewals and pick-ups for you today.  This round is brought to you by The CW.  Here are the headlines:

  • Renewals:  Nikita, starring Maggie Q, will be around for a third season with an unspecified number of episodes.  The Rachel Bilson-starrer Hart of Dixie will see 22 episodes in its second season.  Gossip Girl has been renewed for a sixth-season, which may be its last.
  • Pick-Ups:  The Green Arrow-centric series, Arrow; the Sex and the City prequel, The Carrie Diaries and the reboot of the 1980s series, Beauty and the Beast have all been picked up by the network.  Medical drama, First Cut, starring Mamie Gummer and mystery series, Cult, are other new additions.
  • Cancellations:  Freshman series Ringer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and the bewitched The Secret Circle have been dropped.

Hit the jump for more.

green-arrow-stephen-amell-imageWe previously reported that the CW’s mainstays The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and 90210 would be renewed for another season, but the number of new pick-ups might bode ill for a few of the newer series.  Gossip Girl will return for a sixth and possibly final season as not only do the actors’ contracts expire next year, but as THR reports, executive producer Stephanie Savage said the sixth season felt like “an organic ending point.” It will be interesting to see how freshman series, Arrow, prevails, considering the popularity of superhero-related fare has risen to a fever pitch.  Starring Stephen Amell, Arrow could fill the void left behind by Smallville. It’s probably a safe bet that The Carrie Diaries (have a look at star AnnaSophia Robb as a young Carrie Bradshaw) and Beauty and the Beast (they definitely nailed the “beauty” part with Kristin Kreuk) will find an audience, though First Cut and Cult likely have a more difficult road to renewal ahead of them.
