ARROW Ditches Eye Make-Up for Actual Mask

As great as The CW’s superhero drama series Arrow has been, some fans have been wondering why Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) continues to stick with the eye shadow instead of an actual mask.  Well, things are about to change as the DC hero will be donning a more practical bit of concealing costumery.  While it seems simple and straightforward, a lot of thought was put into the mask.  It’s not just about the look – even though they went through 50-some options to find the right one – since the mask has more to do with Oliver’s transformation from vigilante to hero.  Hit the jump to check out the new masked man.

The first look at the new mask in Arrow comes courtesy of EW.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg talked about the decision to bring the mask in now:

”Conceptually, it was something we wanted to do because Oliver himself is evolving as the Arrow–  from vigilante to hero, sort of from Arrow to Green Arrow — and we wanted to see that progression in his costume as well.  As Oliver is embracing being a hero, being a hero means stepping out of the dark and being more of a symbol, so he has to take steps to conceal his identity more.”

He further commented on why now is the right time for the mask:

”For all of the work that went into creating his mask, those are all the reasons we didn’t do it when we did the pilot, and also, sometimes, people have this knee-jerk reaction to seeing somebody in a mask. ‘Oh, that’s silly.’ But I think that now that people see how serious the show is and how grounded it is, the mask is going to feel like a natural evolution.”

Head over to EW for more on the method behind the mask, and be sure to keep up with our episode recaps here.

Finally….it was honestly so annoying with that stupid green paint. Show is getting better and better and small things like this, which are actually huge, really help even more. The mask looks simple, but perfect honestly.

Always thought it would be more convenient to take a mask off than wipe paint off it he had to switch identities in an insntant

    • Random Bystander

But he’s clearly still wearing the paint underneath.

You know they want to talk about being somewhat grounded, and I get the reasons for only introducing it now that Oliver will be interacting with people as a hero, but as relatively silly as it has been sometimes, with the keeping his head down in the shadows, how much more silly will it be for people to not recognise him in a domino mask.

    • LEM

About as silly as people not recognizing a guy without glasses.

      • Polarboy

Yeah well I have to assume you are referring to the MOS sequel given that they have gone for a more grounded feel also as opposed to most of the comics and shows which have asked for suspension of disbelief. If that’s the case then perhaps they will have Superman use further trickery to conceal his identity.

In the comics he used to vibrate his head so that no one could get a clean picture of him while he was Superman etc. Of course you were probably just making a joke, but my very important points still stand ;)

Honestly I can’t for the life of me see how NO ONE can see that it’s Oliver Queen under some paint and a hood. Good show, btw.

        What about it?

      • Sweet Pea

And so it goes with god… You are who that story was made for, the lack of faith and need for ultra realism you display.

      • The Flobbit

I have seen Life of Pi, I have read Life of Pi. I still don’t get your point. Oh, and I’m a Christian; we are all about faith.

Same reason why no one can tell Clark Kent is Superman. -_______-

      • The Flobbit

Clark Kent was all about mannerisms. Oliver Queen acts manly, ripped, and cocky both ways…

      • Sweet Pea

Clark Kent isn’t dead. He IS all about mannerisms. But if you cant see that he is Superman coz of some mannerisms and a pair of glasses then we can’t help you…

      • The Flobbit

Hey, don’t blame me. Blame the comic book characters of genius intellect that can’t tell a bumbling idiot from a superhero!

    IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!

  • rivertreeradar

now i will start watching it

  • LEM

Yeah but will he still lower his head and turn casually when talking to people?

  • matt murdock

It’s about damn time!!! That eye shadow was irritating. I know the Green Arrow’s funky goatee would definitely give his identity away in “real life” but it would be so cool to see some Peter Pan like tights and that funky goatee from the comics.

These guys are so hacky…people have a problem with masked heroes? Where do they get this info, it’s certainly not from Batman or X-Men or any of the Marvel movies, all of those bombs, man.

I still think this puny mask is too obvious. That 5 O’clock shadow, the chin & nose> easy givaways that he is Oliver. As far as the rest of his outfit, he will hold onto Shado’s hoodie until he’s done with the island story.
