Fans have been clamoring for another Evil Dead film for years now, and next week that wish comes true! Well, kinda. Instead of producing another movie, Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell decided the best way to continue the Evil Dead story was on the small screen, and thus Ash vs. Evil Dead was born. The TV series will air on Starz and boasts 10 half-hour episodes in total, with the first directed by Raimi himself, who also co-wrote the episode with his brother Ivan Raimi.

So how does the story of Evil Dead continue? Well a first look has arrived in the form of the show’s opening scene, which has been made available to watch in advance of the show’s premiere. If anything, this is an opportunity to see new Raimi-helmed material, but it’s also a nice showcase of the franchise’s signature blend of goofy humor and supernatural dealings.

As for the show’s premise, it picks up 30 years after the events of Army of Darkness with Campbell reprising his role as Ash Williams, as lazy and promiscuous as ever. Problem is, he’s the only one capable of handling an impending Deadite invasion.

I’ll admit I was skeptical about the series to begin with, but Perri’s glowing review and this opening scene have me optimistic in a big way. The series premieres on Starz on October 31st and also stars Lucy Lawless, Jill Marie Jones, and Ray Santiago.

Here’s the official synopsis for Ash vs. Evil Dead:

Campbell reprises his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario, and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead.  When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal.  Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.
