Ashton Kutcher to Play Steve Jobs in Biopic JOBS

Given the rather odd casting choice, I feel the need to preface this story with the assertion that this is not an April Fools’ Day joke; this story is (as reported) 100% real. With that in mind, Mr. Ashton Kutcher is apparently readying to play the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in a biopic called Jobs. The notion of a Jobs-centric biopic isn’t exactly new, as Sony began developing such a film merely days after the innovator’s passing. Last we heard, The Social Network scribe Aaron Sorkin was considering penning the studio project, but Jobs is an entirely separate film. Hit the jump for more.

Per Variety, Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) is set to direct Jobs from a script by Matt Whiteley. The film will chronicle Jobs’ life “from a wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple.” Despite Kutcher’s fairly heavy comedic background, I have to admit he does look a great deal like Jobs. Nevertheless, appearance isn’t the highest item on my list when looking at the casting of a biopic, and Kutcher’s dramatic resume doesn’t exactly lead me to believe that he’ll knock the Jobs role out of the park.

Production on Jobs is slated to get underway in May, casting some doubt over the necessity of Sony’s project. I’d be thrilled to see a Sorkin-penned biopic of Jobs’ life, but the studio has to decide whether or not they want to be the second Jobs film out of the gate by a longshot. Though I don’t necessarily think Kutcher’s the right choice to take on the Jobs role, it’s nice to see him willing to stretch his acting chops; he could easily fall into a lapse of complacency with his high profile role on Two and a Half Men. That said, I’d like nothing more than to be pleasantly surprised by his performance so we’ll see how things shake out.

he looks al ot like him. i think this is a good move. you have to remember just cause he is in roles that suck doesn’t mean he cant act good . I don’t think Jesse eisenberg is a great actor but he did a good job playing mark zuckerberg

  Jesse Eisenberg is one hell of an actor, you should check his prior performance in the HBO series Generation Kill, that will change your perception of him.

I saw the headline and just started saying ‘no’. Then I found relief in the fact that it’s April Fools Day. And THEN when I realized this is no joke. Sad April 1st.

He’s in bad roles. That doesn’t make him a bad actor. He’s actually a good actor. People don’t seem to be able to see past the terribly-written characters. Sad. He’s a good choice. Probably not the best choice, but still a good one.

I do see a physical resemblance between Ashton and Steve. With the right director, this movie shouldn’t be too bad.

  Please don’t compare a great actor like Heath Ledger to kutcher. Ledger already received an oscar nom for Brokeback Mountain by the time he was cast as the Joker. What critically-acclaimed roles does kutcher have?

I know they look a like, but please, let this be a joke.
Noah Wyle should play as Steve Jobs again. He also looks alike, makes a good impression and is a way better actor. Also, even Jobs liked the way Noah Wyle portrayed him.

Eh, it’s April Fools day, so yes, even though this story is being reported as 100% true, that doesn’t necessarily make it so.

HOWEVER, if it is true, I’m not happy with it. I’m not going to lie to myself, Kutcher does have some sort of resemblance to the man, but casting purely on looks isn’t always the right choice. Also, take a look at the Director and his resume. The director is supposedly Joshua Michael Stern, whom has directed two pictures: Neverwas, and Swing Vote, neither of which are incredibly impressive with box office, nor audiences, so to me, it seems like an odd choice of a Director as well. I tried to find the screenwriter, who’s name is: Matt Whiteley, however I can’t find anything on him. That means A.) He’s a brand new writer, or B.) He’s just a made up name. (A) would suggest yet ANOTHER odd choice, and (B) would suggest that this is obviously an April Fools joke.

I don’t know, me personally, I don’t believe it. I don’t believe a studio would be willing to give the rights of perhaps one of the greatest living innovators of our time to those three folks. Besides, Aaron Sorkin is cooking up his own screenplay, which will obviously garner much more popularity/attention with film studios, so yeah, I don’t buy this.

No. Just, no. At least, not Ashton Kutcher. Someone fit for the role has to be found. But people will go and see this anyway since it’s about Steve Jobs.

We already have Pirates of Silicon Valley… C’mon, Kutcher might look similar to Jobs physically but that’s IT!! And nobody even mention giving him a chance to spread his wings as an actor or something. He’s bad all the way through for anything remotely dramatic…

Sadly this is true. Nick Offerman was at FSU a few days ago and he was doing Q&As and talking about his life. He mentioned he was offered to be a part of this movie and when he heard Ashton Kutcher was playing Steve Jobs he was like “fuck no”. This is terrible.

Yuck. Kutcher is an annoying actor with 0% reliability when it comes to serious, deep roles – and anyone who’s read the Jobs biography understands the depths of this man.
Given the team working on this film I highly doubt I will go and see it (unless the trailer knocks me off my feet). However, I hope that this will not, by some twisted Hollywood logic, render the Sorkin movie obsolete. Given the amazing job he did with The Social Network’s screenplay, and given such juicy material as Steve Jobs’ life – Sorkin will kill it, no doubt.

The said the same thing about Leonardo being just a pretty face in Titanic and nothing more, and Daniel Craig is not a BOND material…but look at both of them now……who knows..this might be the time for Kutcher to be racognized as serious actor…btw, the butterfly effect was not that bad…..his acting was quite convincing for me…..
