Sony Pictures is already hard at work trying to turn the popular video game series Uncharted into a movie (even though it kind of already is), and now they’ve cast their eye to another “Grab all the Walls” game.  Variety reports that the studio is in final negotiations with game developer Ubisoft for the screen rights to Assassin’s Creed.  The games center on an a secret order of assassins operating in past centuries (the first game is set in the 12th century, the next two games are in the 15th century), but are framed within a sci-fi context of being the memories of a hapless everyman* who’s at the center of a present-day secret war.  The game features lots of parkour and trying to covertly pull off assassinations before you blow it and have to run the target down in the most attention-grabbing fashion possible.

Ubisoft has set the terms of the deal to be a more active participant in the movie’s development rather than provide a one-off licensing agreement.  Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot says he also wants movies of Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon.  Hit the jump to see a trailer for the first game and start your fan-casting in the comments section.

*Fun fact: Uncharted‘s hero Nathan Drake and Assassin’s Creed‘s overarching protagonist Desmond Miles are both voiced by Nolan North.  Actually, if you ever doubt who’s the male voice actor in a video game, guess “Nolan North” and you’ll be right about 70% of the time.

there is a huge potential in Assassin’s creed universe. Now, it could turn into gold with some talented directors ( John Mc Tiernan, Sir Ridley Scott, Nolan, Spielberg, John Milius ) or into BS with some awful directors ( Snyder, McG, Bay )

I totally agree. Its time for a video game to get a decent movie. It took years of trying to finally land some well made superhero movies, gaming is due. However, it will take a director like the ones you mentioned to pull it off (a la Nolan and Batman). I am a huge fan of Assassins Creed and there is enough in those games for 3 to 4 really good movies under the right direction and studio. I dont think Sony can pull it off. I can picture the first movie telling the Altair storyline and then re-casting the lead for the next movie and following Desmond Miles with a few cameos by Altair! It could be sick or it could be directed by McG with Channing Tatum as Altair. Fucking get it RIGHT!!!

The crappiness of Prince of Persia comes to mind…

Actually there is a lot of potential with the assassin’s creed universe in terms of a live action tv show than a movie. The problem with a movie is that you have to rush everything in a maximum of 3 hours but with a tv series, you can explore a lot more without worrying about the time constraint.

All I can say is: ABOUT DAMN TIME! This is one of the best video game franchises (IMO) and has a crap ton of potential to be an awesome film series….with the right directors/writers of course. Duncan Jones, Rupert Wyatt, Rian Johnson or Nicolas Winding Refn are among some of the REASONABLE ones to get to take on the job that I would love to have direct it.

How much do you guys want to bet that Jason Statham will be cast?

CAN WE PLEASE GET A FUCKING HALO MOVIE MADE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Okay. Let’s make Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed and 3 shitastic Resident Evil movies, but one of the most profitable and popular games in the world….nah we’ll skip it.

Fox and Microsoft need to get their shit together. And Spielberg needs to take some initiative.

I spent every day cursing the day Microsoft let go off Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp.

    Why Sony? WHY?
Sony Pictures makes movies with money and no brains. Seriously, money f**ks movies.

  • soliter

Make it into a CG film. With real people will suck as much as Prince of Persia.

This has HUGE potential just because of the sheer AWESOME of the series. The series’ coolest feature was that alot of the characters you meet were real people. However, it could go either way. I vote Chris Nolan for Director (Hey, Dark Knight is awesome) and for the cast to stay the same. (Yes, I know that Nolan North doesn’t look like Desmond but he’s close enough and his voice rocks!) It would give the Film the same feel and we know that this isn’t Rocket Science. AC: Linage pulled it off quite nicely. Now, How ’bout and Arkham City Movie?
