Painful First Trailer and Poster for ATLAS SHRUGGED: PART II

     September 6, 2012

A first trailer and poster for the Ayn Rand adaptation Atlas Shrugged: Part II have landed online to prove that the sequel actually did get made.  Part I was a box office flop when it hit theaters and netted overwhelmingly negative reviews, but the producers were determined to carry on with their plans to complete the trilogy.  Few of the first film’s actors have returned for this follow-up, and the trailer doesn’t exactly signal that we’ll see an increase in quality.  The visual effects are Terra Nova-bad and the dialogue is cringeworthy, with such thought-provoking lines as “I’ve only got one thing worth fighting for *points to brain* this.”

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  Directed by John Putch, the film stars Samantha Mathis, Ray Wise, Jason Beghe, Esai Morales, D.B. Sweeney, and Paul McCraneAtlas Shrugged: Part II opens on October 12th.

Via The Film Stage.

Here’s the synopsis:

The global economy is on the brink of collapse. Unemployment has risen to 24%. Gas is now $42 per gallon. Brilliant creators, from artists to industrialists, continue to mysteriously disappear at the hands of the unknown.

Dagny Taggart, Vice President in Charge of Operations for Taggart Transcontinental, has discovered what may very well be the answer to a mounting energy crisis – found abandoned amongst the ruins of a once productive factory, a revolutionary motor that could seemingly power the World.

But, the motor is dead… there is no one left to decipher its secret… and, someone is watching.

It’s a race against the clock to find the inventor before the motor of the World is stopped for good.

Who is John Galt?

This article is typical of the leftist media mentality that loathes capitalism
and God and prefers to surrender to and worship the almighty government.

    • TheHOYT

Actually, if this movie is accurately based on the novel by Ayn Rand, then it should be godless, as she was a self-proclaimed atheist .

What a strange political climate we have here in the US. You’ve got the Democrats ‘booing’ the inclusion of God in their party platform at the DNC. And, then you have the Republican VP who evokes God in the US at every turn, but idolizes the philosophy of Ayn Rand an atheist.

    • Ramone

Clearly you’ve neither bothered to read Rand’s book or see the film. As stated by another commentor, she was an atheiest through and through. There’s absolutely nothing in this article to indicate “bias”.

      Troll is as troll does.

      • Brenda

        You should know, Troll.

The article is steeped in bias.
Since you share it you are blind to it.

    • Brenda

The leftist media does loathe God and capitalism as you correctly stated
not in referencing Rand, the atheist, whom you did not but the media.

The repliers here are hysterical and missed your point.

Sugreev2001, you prove my point on hysterical replies.
Thanks for exposing yourself to reinforce my comments.

Honestly, that looks better than Pt. 1, which went a little something like this: “blah, blah, blah trains. Blah, blah blah, steel. Blah, blah, blah industry. Snore.”

  • Kevin Klawitter

The trailer makes it look considerably better than “Part I”, if nothing else. But “Part I” was a terrible, terrible movie, so that’s not saying much. It actually creates a real sense of danger and stakes, rather than just looking at a bunch of privileged rich people asking each other who this anarcho-terrorist who calls himself “John Galt” is (which is essentially what the trailer, and film for that matter, for “Part I” amounted to). And at least nobody’s saying “They can’t take away my metal!” this time. That dialogue was pure gold, funnier than 90% of comedy trailers that year.

Republicans Americans are the greatest threat to world security since the Nazi party. They are equally as bigoted and hate-filled. For the sake of the rest of the world and humanity don’t let them win this election. OBAMA 2012! OBAMA 2012!

    • TheHOYT

So, you accuse them of being Nazi’s, bigoted and hate-filled … don’t you see the irony here.

      • Grayden

Right-wing ideology leans toward fascism, which is when
corporations/ special interests control the government so
technically it’s more appropriate and accurate to compare
republicans to Hitler’s Nazi Party than democrats.
Republicans favor big business and already allow corporations
by and large more rights than the individual.

      • Crazyottyojr

Actually the Democrats in this administration favor the big business/ banks that support them. i.e. GE. /Goldman Sachs.. and both parties support a type of Corporatism/Statism so it is absolutely false and a little silly to point to one or the other and say they are Nazi’s/Fascists..the Republic is dead.. The OW’s protesters were tools of the left and the TEA party morphed into another arm of the Republican party establishment. they share power by dividing us with silly and really meaningless social issues like abortion and gay marriage.. All the while our rights, standard of living and liberties are slowly eroded to the point where we are now monitored 24/7. We are told what to eat, what to drive, what to say , how to raise our children, how worship, where to worship what to worship. My salary has more than tripled since 1982 yet remains the same in adjusted dollars. They want it that way.. Neither side wants real success in it populace .. too hard to control…Education has more than quadrupled since the 80′s… why is that? No the power brokers on both sides want us broke, stupid, struggling and most of all fighting amongst ourselves….

Communism or Fascism? That’s a tough choice.

Scripted drooling dribble. You insult all Holocaust victims ma’am and obama has been terrible

    Samantha Mathis is still hot.

  • jasperwolf

Awful from beginning to end and this Dagney Taggart is an emotional weakling, which Rand heroines are not. Would love to read a George R.R. Martin script of Atlas Shrugged. They are both wonderfullly grandiose scifi fantasy.

  • Strong Enough

all i know is i hate republicans :)

    • ScaredForMovies

I’m not a huge republican fan either. But it’s not like Obama’s piss poor job is making me a fan of the democrats. If you want to do some research you’ll find that Obama and trick Dick Cheney are distant cousins. I shit you not. It’s kind of like choosing between a punch to the balls, or a kick to the balls.

  • Try it

There is a reason why Atlas Shrugged is one of the best selling novels of all time, and why those sales have only jumped during the Bush-Obama years. Increasingly, if we bother to look, we see that the one-size-fits-all solution of having a bureaucrat (any of them, in any area) point a gun at you and me, saying, “If only I had enough money and enough power to make and enforce rules, I would have the right answer …” DOESN’T create happiness, DOESN’T create prosperity, DOESN’T empower anyone (except the bureaucrat) to live his life to the optimum. The results are all around you — look — and give Atlas Shrugged a read. Ayn Rand was about a lot more than capitalism.
