The international trailer for Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block has gone online.  If Cornish’s name looks familiar, it’s probably because his credits include co-writing The Adventures of Tintin and Ant-Man with Edgar Wright.  Wright serves as one of the executive producers on Block, which is about a teen street gang who take on hostile alien invaders.  While the trailer plays up the Shaun of the Dead connection (Nick Frost co-stars, Nira Park and James Wilson are producers), that’s not a bad film to call back.  It’s also a similar-sounding set-up: a director who understands the conventions of a genre (in this case, alien invasion flicks), mixes it with a low-key setting, and is able to derive both laughs and thrills from the result.

2011 has no shortage of alien flicks, but Attack the Block looks like it could be a standout.  Attack the Block will play at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.  It opens in the UK on May 13th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Attack the Block:

Sam is walking home in a scary South London tower block when she’s robbed by a gang of hooded youths. She flees when the gang are attacked by a small alien creature which falls from the sky.

While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of creatures falls. The gang grab weapons, mount bikes, and set out to defend their turf. But this time, the creatures are much bigger. Savage and bestial, nothing will stand in their way. And the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked Sam are about to become her only hope.

This looks really cool. Countdown to the American remake starts…….now!

On another note, this kind of reminded me of THE MONSTER SQUAD. I hope the remake takes this kind of approach.

the american version will b terible

    I’m gonna need subtitles…

But yeah, it does look cool. Since the term “the Block” is in the title, I wonder if it will use sci-fi to kind of comment on the degradation of the inner city the way Candyman used horror to comment on the projects. Also: badass kills.

I’m not that convinced, the dialogue was corner and trying to hard to be hip. “I only have 1 text, this is too much madness to explain one text.” Ugh…

On a side note does anyone think the alien looks like a werewolf meets critters?

I liked Nick Frosts character, and it started out alright (like when they were looking out the window at all the meteors falling from the sky). I also like that they aren’t just using your generic brits in the film but are exploring a sub-species (and no I don’t mean that derogatorily) of London. :P

Who knows, maybe the movie will be better than this trailer.

    Meh.

After Eden Lake, Harry Brown, Skins… (I know their movies, but there’s true stuff in it) I cannot sympathize with these awful British kids. The ones that aren’t spoiled and are not blowing their richness in your face, seem to be all ghetto and hard knocks (black and white the same)

Even American kids seem more better and behaved than the British frightful youth.

Really looking forward to this, looks promising!

Just regarding the post above me, making a blanket covering stereotype of kids kids by the movies you’ve seen? What on Earth? :S Better behaved? there are good and bad kids whether you live in Britain or America… jeeezz.. Proud to part of this so called ‘frightful youth’!
