Considering that the film was bumped around from September to January due to a national tragedy, it would be nice to feel a little sorry for Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad. The period film, which casts Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as cops going against Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) for control of Los Angeles, has a great cast and period setting. On top of that, The Untouchables is a great film and it wouldn’t be the worst thing to see more films like it. And yet, Gangster Squad is a total miss. My review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Brolin leads as Sgt. John O’Mara, who -- in the opening sequences of the film -- sees a little girl fresh off the bus picked up by a thug who takes her with the hopes of putting her in white slavery. O’Mara’s partner wants none of it, so John storms the building by himself, killing a couple guys in the elevator and then arresting the men about to defile the girl. The action here is over the top, which sets a tone that the film is going to be a violent cartoon, but it never tops the insane sense you get from this opening action sequence. It was Mickey Cohen’s building, so the men O’Mara arrested are released, but Cohen (Penn) kills them anyway, because it’s that kind of movie.

O’Mara’s actions catch the eye of Chief Parker (Nick Nolte) who tasks John with the job of assembling a team to fight ...

David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, may be respected for giving the world one of the greatest television shows of all time, but when he jumped into feature films with Not Fade Away, he seems to have been allowed to do whatever he wanted, but the finished product was abandoned by its studio (Paramount), who must not have thought it was Oscar material. That’s too bad as Not Fade Away is a film that feels alive with the possibilities of cinema, but also is aware of the past. The story of a band that never made it, Chase’s semi-autobiographical tale paints a great portrait of teenagers going through the 1960’s and are swept up in the cultural changes reflected in the music of the era. My review of the Blu-ray of Not Fade Away follows after the jump.

Jack Magaro plays Douglas, a young drummer who starts the film in high school. He’s got a crush on Grace Dietz (Bella Heathcote), but she doesn’t even notice him. That changes when he and his friends start to form a band. At first he plays drums, but one night he’s asked to sing lead vocals, and it starts to create some fractures in the band. Wells (Will Brill) is the lead singer, but he’s a better guitarist, while Eugene (Jack Huston) quietly supports Douglas. At home, Doug’s dad Pat (James Gandolfini) hates the way that Doug dresses and thinks he looks like someone fresh off the boat. He also wants his son ...

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger were a cinematic match made in heaven. The duo began collaborating on movies in 1939, and worked together off and on for over three decades. Though their films were credited to both as the writers, directors and producers, Powell was more of the director of the two, while Pressburger was the writer. Though their works have been spotlighted by the Criterion collection since they started making laserdiscs, they are the sort of filmmakers that will never be as well known as David Lean or Danny Boyle, but are arguably among the best - if not the best - filmmakers that England ever produced. 1943’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is a strong contender for their greatest film. Criterion has just released it on Blu-ray and our review follows after the jump.

As would be known to the viewers of the day, Colonel Blimp was a cartoon character that was popular in England, and was known as an older, stereotypically British personality. But now, perhaps confusingly, he is less well known, so it’s worth pointing out there’s no such person in the film. The main character here is Clive Wynne-Candy (Roger Livesy), who starts the film as an old Major General. It’s World War II, and he’s back in service training young soldiers. As the film begins his driver (Deborah Kerr) lets slip that war games start at midnight, and her boyfriend figures the best way to win is to start before then. When ...

It’s hard not to see Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln as the Oscar film that didn’t. The movie was nominated for twelve academy awards, but it only went home with two (though one was for Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in the titular role). It was trumped by Argo, and though comparing the two is sort of like equating apples and turnips, Lincoln is the better film, and perhaps was underrated for being another in a long line of great Spielberg film. Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a ton of great character actors co-star in this story of the passage of the 13th amendment. Our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

As the film starts, Lincoln (Day-Lewis) is in turmoil. The Civil War is almost over, the North has won, but he knows that if he takes the South back without banning slavery, the whole war might have been for naught. With his recent second election, he gets his staff (with David Strathairn’s William Seward his right hand man) to find him some Democrats in the house who have lost the recent election to defect and vote with the Republican party. His first line of attack is assembling three men (James Spader, John Hawkes, Tim Blake Nelson) to offer government jobs to those who change their position, while he must also get his own party in line.

On one side of the Republican party is Preston Blair (Hal Holbrook), who wants Lincoln to make every effort to end the war first, ...

It’s weird to think we’re only four movies in to Judd Apatow’s directing career, because for the last ten years he’s become a brand. Between working with Adam McKay and Will Ferrell on their comedies, to launching Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig (and more), he established that he was one of the biggest forces in comedy. But his most recent film, This is 40, came out and it didn’t feel like event. It’s a modest film that’s enjoyable enough, but feels like a B side. Our review of This is 40 follows after the jump.

Following the characters Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from his previous hit Knocked Up, Apatow wants to show the tumultuous relationship between two people who love each other, but have kids and sometimes want to kill each other. The film starts with Debbie turning 40, though she has everyone pretend that she’s 38. She runs a clothing shop, while Pete’s started his own record label to release the works of musicians like Graham Parker (playing himself), an artist whose peak was three decades ago. They are struggling financially, partly because Pete’s label is a dud, and partly because Pete keeps giving money to his father (Albert Brooks), who recently had triplets and needles his son to support him.

They have two daughters, Sadie and Charlotte (Maude and Iris Apatow), with Sadie just starting puberty. As Pete is about to have his fortieth birthday as well, the two are trying to figure out how to be ...

Eastbound and Down is a ridiculously entertaining show that has had a core issue since Season 2, which is that the arc of Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers is virtually the same for every season. He’s an arrogant guy who learns a lesson on how to be a slightly better person every time, but in a way that suggests for every two steps forward there’s one back. He’s still an ignorant redneck jerk, but maybe a little better. Season Three looked to close out the series, and that gives it a nice boost over Season Two, which was also good, but suffered more in direct comparison to the first season. Now it seems that creators McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green are going back to this well for a fourth season. But they had a good ending, with Season Three, and that makes us a little worried about more. Our review of Season Three of Eastbound and Down on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

For the third season, Kenny Powers has been called back up to the minors to pitch for Myrtle Beach Mermen and things are going okay. He’s now partnered with Shane (Jason Sudeikis) as his catcher, and the two are loaded with bad jokes and are dating college aged girls. Kenny goes home to find that April (Katy Mixon) still has feelings for him, even though he abandoned her and their child, and he tries to make peace with both of them, but he’s Kenny Powers.

April comes to ...

First films are often a filmmaker’s worst movie, as they seem to be learning their craft as the film goes on. That said, they can also be instructive once they have a body of work, as you can often see the seeds of their future work embedded within. And though Christopher Nolan’s Following is one of his weakest efforts, all things considered, it’s still indicative of a talent that would emerge. Where in 1998 Nolan’s film may have come across as a clever but small riff on Pulp Fiction and the genre of crime films Tarantino helped launch, now you can see that Nolan was pretty on top of his game from the get go, even if his first film is a minor work. Our review of the The Criterion Collection’s Blu-ray of Following follows after the jump.

Jeremy Theobald stars as an unnamed writer who picks up the habit of following interesting people around to observe them. He is approached by Cobb (Alex Haw), who notices that he’s being watched. Cobb doesn’t like it because he’s a thief. The Author follows along on a burglary and takes things along with Cobb while he reveals the secrets to theft and where people keep their most valuable possessions (which are not always the most expensive ones). After the duo steal from a woman’s flat, the writer gets involved with the woman, named the Blonde (Lucy Russell), who is having trouble with her mob boss boyfriend. She then gets the author hooked on ...

Though formulaic to a fault, Pitch Perfect is the sort of film where you know pretty much everything that’s going to happen, but you enjoy the ride anyway. Anna Kendrick leads a charming ensemble of girls who are in an a cappella singing group that competes in nationals. Is it Bring it On meets Glee? Yes, but… it works. Our review of Pitch Perfect on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Anna Kendrick plays Beca, an outsider who goes to college reluctantly. She wants to be a DJ as she’s often making mash-up tracks and wants to move to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams. But she promised her father she’d give college a go, and when she starts slacking he makes her a deal that if she joins a group he’ll help finance her trip to LA as long as she at least tries for a while. So she joins an a cappella group that’s headed up by Aubrey (Anna Camp), who ended up vomiting the last time they went to nationals. There’s also her sidekick Chloe (Brittany Snow), who has nodes, Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), slutty Stacy (Alexis Knapp), the silent but weird Lilly (Hana Mae Lee) and more.

Though Beca is reticent, eventually she joins up and their main competition is another local act who end up recruiting Jesse (Skylar Astin) in to their a cappella group, and it’s Jesse who is the Beca’s love interest. But in Beca’s glee club Aubrey reigns with an iron fist on what ...

Trouble with the Curve came out in late September and died a quick death, not helped by Clint Eastwood’s performance at the Republican National Convention. But though Eastwood was front and center in selling the picture, he didn’t direct it. No, it was helmed by Robert Lorenz, a longtime Eastwood associate who wanted his turn behind the camera. This suggests he won’t get another chance. It’s a modestly charming formula movie that plays like something better suited for old people and television viewings. Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake co-star and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Eastwood plays Gus, an aged baseball recruiter who may get replaced by Phillip Sanderson (Matthew Lillard) and his reliance on stats and computers. The owner of the team (Robert Patrick) is willing to listen to the new guy, though Gus is somewhat protected by Pete (John Goodman). The problem is that Gus is getting old and his eyesight may be fading. That’s why Pete calls in Gus’s daughter Mickey (Adams) to go with him on a scouting assignment. She reluctantly agrees even though she’s on a case that’s about the make her a partner at her law firm. There’s also another scout on the road, Johnny (Timberlake), who takes an interest in Mickey. Eastwood is following a hot young athelete who’s so arrogant that there’s no way he isn’t all he thinks he’s cracked up to be, but Lillard’s character thinks he’s the next big thing, so therein lies your third act.

There’s ...

Though by no means is it a good movie, Total Recall, the 2012 remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Paul Verhoven action classic, is also not the disaster that some might have expected or hoped for. For the most part it’s a slightly stupid action movie with a number of big set pieces, but nothing all that memorable about it. Colin Farrell stars alongside Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale in Len Wiseman’s update, and our review of the film on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Douglas Quaid (Farrell) has been having dreams lately about a big fight and a woman (Biel) he’s in love with. But when he wakes up he’s with his wife (Beckinsale) and has a boring factory job making robots. But his mind is preoccupied with these dreams, and so he goes to Rekall where they give you memories of things that didn’t happen. Where this set-up works fairly elegantly in the original because of Quaid’s desire to go to Mars, here it’s more the thing that has to happen to start the movie. And here there is no Mars, the set up is that the poor half of the world lives in Shanghai, while rich people live in London. There’s a tunnel through the center of the earth that brings the workers into London, but the politics are never more than rich people = mostly bad. But when Quaid goes to Rekall, before he gets any of the treatment, it’s revealed that he’s a government agent and the building ...

How do you make a Jason Bourne film without Matt Damon? There are a couple of options: you can remake the first film, or you can spin-off in a new direction. What’s most frustrating about The Bourne Legacy is that it takes a third option, which is to pretend that Damon is actually a character in this world, but he’s just not on screen. Perhaps Universal was stuck between a rock and a hard place. They couldn’t kill Damon off-camera, and they probably hope he’ll come back for more, so instead they brought in Jeremy Renner for a story that runs in parallel to the end of The Bourne Ultimatum, but doesn’t do anything to move the franchise forward. It is also pretty bad. Our review of the Blu-ray of The Bourne Legacy follows after the jump.

The film begins with a parallel narrative. In one part Edward Norton is dealing with the aftermath of Bourne and Treadstone/Blackbriar/Outcome, etc. and in the other Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross is out hiking survivalist style. Eventually Norton decides that Cross’s program should be terminated, which means killing everyone associated with it. But first Cross has an awkward scene with Oscar Isaac, who is also in the program.

The big reveal of the film is that everyone who’s a super-soldier like Bourne are on drugs that make them smarter and stronger. Cross comes in to talk with Isaac’s character because he needs more pills (nicknamed chems), and these chems become the driving force of the narrative. ...

Premium Rush is the kind of movie Hollywood no longer seems interested in: The B-movie action film. These are films with low budgets and generally smaller stakes that try to make up for their limitations with a streamlined plot, a high concept, and a leading man that people like. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon star in this story of a bike messenger (Gordon-Levitt) who’s given a hot item that gets him hunted by a cop (Shannon). Our review of Premium Rush on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Wilee (yes, like the coyote), a bike messenger who rides around New York without breaks who goes as fast as he can while mapping his non-stop route in his mind. At the end of a day, after his girlfriend Vanessa (Dania Ramirez) has just broken up with him and moved out of her old apartment, he’s given one last assignment. And it’s a delivery for Vanessa’s old roommate Nima (Jamie Chung). Cop Bobby Monday (Shannon) wants that package because it’s worth $50 grand and it would clear him of his gambling debts. But it turns out that it’s not just money on the line, but a human life.

Running 91 minutes (or about 84 sans credits) David Koepp’s Premium Rush is never boring, even if the writer turned director doesn’t have a great panache for action sequences. If the film works it’s because Michael Shannon is one of those actors who makes magic right now. From his high pitched giggle to ...

For the set visit to Gangster Squad, we were driven from Hollywood to the middle of Bellflower, California, which had been dressed to look like 1940’s Hollywood. It was a cold night, but before we can get to set, we were hustled around the hundreds of onlookers near the edges of the shoot. Ryan Gosling was shooting that day, and that meant many of the people from the neighborhood wanted to have a look, and were trying to take picture or film him with their phones. It was impressive to that many people at considering that it was already ten at night and the weather was already cold.

We were on set October 20, 2011, and at the time we had no idea that Gangster Squad would ever become controversial. But how could we know that a shooting in the summer of 2012 would change and delay the film? Such will explain why they talk about shooting a shooting in Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and why these interviews didn’t run months ago. At the time, spirits were high as they were halfway through the shooting process and Sean Penn has just started filming, though he wasn’t on set that night. To find out more about the things we learned on the set of Gangster Squad, read on after the jump.

Instead the focus of our trip was a steadi-cam crane shot which followed Gosling as he walked down the street and into the club Slapsy Maxie’s where Mickey Cohen is enjoying a dinner. ...

Josh Brolin has had one of the strangest rises to leading man status imaginable. Though he kicked off his career in The Goonies, he spent the next twenty years of his career in supporting parts, and on television with little success. Then came 2007, where he was not only in four big movies, he was great in all of them and the lead in No Country for Old Men. Now he’s a star and he’s one of the three leads of Gangster Squad. We had a chance to talk with Josh Brolin on set about the movie and his career, and that interview follows after the jump.

Question: Can you talk about the fascination and the glamor of the gangster life, and what you know about it?

Josh Brolin: Well it’s hit kind of a mythological place for me in that I have no knowledge of it whatsoever other than what I’ve read and what I’ve watched… there’s been these movies recently like Public Enemies that have copied this old school cadence in their language… and I like the idea of it being as normal as possible and as modern as possible even though it’s not modern. I doubt that they knew they were speaking in that cadence back then. So when you hear something in that cadence, it takes you out of it for me. That’s why I like the version that we’re doing.

Ruben Fleischer exploded on the scene with Zombieland, which made him a hot young director to keep an eye on. Though his follow up (30 Minutes or Less) could be typed a sophomore slump, it may have been because he didn’t want to keep making comedies like Zombieland. Gangster Squad is Fleischer’s chance to show that he isn’t just a funny guy with a great eye, but someone who could do anything. Our on-set interview with Fleischer follows after the jump.

Question: [One] of the things that they said was that they brought you in specifically to give it a sort of modernness that merged with the period details. How did you approach this when you came in to it?

Ruben Fleischer: I was a fan of the genre. Some of the greatest movies of all time are within this genre, The Godfather, and Goodfellas, and Untouchables and there's just so many classic gangster movies that I was always such a fan of. So I was just thrilled at the opportunity to get to make one. And every period has their take on it, like in the '70s it was The Godfather, Chinatown. In the '80s, it was The Untouchables. The '90s, I guess it was L.A. Confidential and Goodfellas and there hasn’t been one for a while that had the staying power. There were a few in the early 2000s that I don't think were up to the same level as those other ones. So I was just psyched to get ...

Anthony Mackie has become so reliable. He’s one of those guys that gets called in to show up for a couple scenes and just deliver. That’s not to say he can’t handle his own, as he delivered a stellar performance in Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-Winning The Hurt Locker, but of late he’s been a scene stealer. You can tell why in the interview below. The man is a goof, and a great talker. Our interview with Anthony Mackie on the set of Gangster Squad follows after the jump.

Can you talk about the appeal of the gangster era for you?

Anthony Mackie: I’m a firm believe that a man looks his best in a suit and I feel like in the late 40’s people just dressed up to do everything, and I loved when I read the script that this misfit group of guys got together to take down this kingpin. I was really turned on by it and it’s not often that I get to play a character like this in this era.

What’s the character?

Mackie: I play a hard-nosed cop that’s given the opportunity to take down a major figure in the illegal world of money laundering and narcotics, and the way (my character) Mr. Washington was at the time he was just really about cleaning up his neighborhood and just helping everyone out. So when I read the script that was a huge appeal for me.

Was there any trepidation about playing a character in an era where – let’s ...

Though Robert Patrick may never escape his first breakthrough role as the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, over the last twenty years he’s built a great resume as a character actor. In Gangster Squad he plays a seasoned vet that’s part cowboy, and it’s a part that Patrick was born to play. We got a chance to talk to the actor about his character and some of his previous work while on the set of Gangster Squad. Our interview follows after the jump.

Can you talk about the intrigue with Gangsters in this era for you?

Robert Patrick: My personal fascination? Well, it was still sort of a lawless time and LA was sort of like the old West and Mickey Cohen came in after the prohibition and set up shop… I think the police were corrupt at the time, and it’s just a really sexy time period, to be honest with you. Cars were sexy. Clothes were sexy, women were sexy.

So do you feel like you were playing an Earp brother?

Patrick: Well my guy Max Kennard is the oldest of all the guys, and he was born in the 1800’s and raised in Texas. So he was transplanted to Los Angeles. They had me written in the script as the deadliest cop. I’ve got more kills than any of the other guys, I carry a Colt 45 Peacemaker. So I’m sort of a throwback to an old Western character and LA is very much an Old West town for me. ...

Though there was a while there where they tried to turn him into a star, Giovanni Ribisi has settled into to being a great character actor, and as a supporting player, he’s proved himself to be one of the most reliable supporting performers working today. In Gangster Squad he plays the techie, which if the film is to be compared to The Untouchables, is the Charles Martin Smith role. But Ribisi was ready to play and we talked about his character and acting in our interview, which follows after the jump.

Can you talk about your take on the fascination with gangsters and that period in time. Is it, do you think, is it kind of theme romanticized?

Giovanni Ribisi: Yeah. I mean, I guess so. There’s sort of a history of making gangster movies all the way back to, you know, D.W. Griffith and before that. And, I don’t know, it’s just – as far as having a story to tell it’s dynamic and as a filmmaker I think that there was something that was sort of – it was more or less, for lack of a better expression, it was like the lowest hanging fruit as far as being able to pull guns out and do things that had shock value. But also I think at the time back in the day, especially in the late 30s, actual gangsters were celebrities as well. You know, like the John Dillingers and all that. They were bigger than movie stars at one ...

Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick are two of the producer on Gangster Squad, and both saw the film as a chance to take a period story and make it fresh for modern audiences. The films that kept coming up were Sherlock Holmes (which Lin was a producer on) and The Untouchables. They spoke at length about the origin of the film, its director and cast, and the vibe they were going for with the movie. Our on-set interview with Lin and McCormick follows after the jump.

Is it true this isn’t based on a book, but that they’re writing a book at the same time?

Dan Lin: Yes it’s based on Paul Lieberman’s seven part series that he wrote for the LA Times.

The real people…

Lin: Very much so, some of the real people have come to visit, they are two squad members who are still alive… Bert Phelps has come to visit us, and he’s 86, and family members of O’mara’s – who’s played by Josh Brolin – his kids has come to visit, Wooters, Ryan Gosling’s character – his kids have come to visit. It’s exciting for them.

Kevin McCormick: And in some cases the kids hadn’t been told the real story. With the younger kids, either the father had left the force or it was a chapter earlier on before they had grown up. So for them it’s exciting because they get to see a part of their history and watch a movie get made.

Lin: What was interesting for us ...
