Dredd was one of my biggest surprises last year. There's a straightforward nature to the film that never lets up. The action is right in that sweet spot of new and familiar. However, the best part of the film is what separates it from its predecessor: a main character that doesn't smack of cheesy popcorn films. Sylvester Stallone's variant had a goofy sidekick and lots of helmetless Dredd, which is an egregious change from the comics its based. This time there is no useless and goofy sidekick along for the ride and Dredd, played here by the excellently-cast Karl Urban, keeps his helmet on. Then there's the 3D aspect that doesn't play by normal conventions and some shocking violence that is made all the more beautiful by the slow-mo drug and third dimension. This feels like the film 2000 AD fans have been waiting for, and even as a newbie you can find a lot here to sink your teeth into. Hit the jump for my full review of the disc and why the special features leave you wanting more.

Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd, who has been tasked with giving a rookie Judge a sink or swim test run in the wasteland known as Mega-City One. Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) has a special mutation that has given her psychic abilities, but she may not be ready for the life of a Judge. Dredd and Anderson respond to a seemingly ordinary triple homicide—that's life in Mega-City One—and realize they aren't ...

While Donnie Yen made a name for himself on American shores with his breakout hit in 2008, Ip Man, his reputation was established for many martial arts action film fans long before he ever played the Wing Chun grandmaster. I spoke with the multi-talented Yen earlier this year in promotion of his upcoming film, Wu Xia (or Dragon). The period film, set in 1917 China, revolves around an investigation into his character, Liu Jinxi, and the mysterious death of two criminals that were attempting to rob a general store. Some have likened the film to David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, and the careful balance between fighting for what is right even if it doesn’t benefit the greater good is touched on.

While the conversation strayed from touching on Dragon directly, I did get his thoughts on playing a character with a reserved nature, the differences between a period film and a modern film, and his preferences between the two. Additionally, we talked about how he feels he is a martial arts chameleon, his reason for turning down The Expendables 2, how much he trains between films, his love of MMA, and much more. You can find the complete interview after the jump.

Collider: You've made quite a few modern films, and you've made a lot of period films. Do you prefer working in one time period or another?

Donnie Yen: I actually prefer modern film, honestly. I feel in a modern film that I'm not restricted to a certain way of... For example, in a period film, where I'm playing a historical person, then ...

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to sit down with creator J. Michael Straczynski, widely known as JMS, to talk about his past, present, and future. JMS has had long tenures as the creator and head writer for Babylon 5, a long and well-received run on Thor and Spider-Man, time spent as a journalist, script writer, and much more. Straczynski was a willing participant as he fielded all manner of questions about him being a control freak, how he tried to hide from the crossover events that he clashed with in The Amazing Spider-Man by taking over Thor, and how he plans to utilize the Joe's Comics imprint at Image Comics. Hit the jump for a full transcript of my interview.

Collider: You've had a hell of a career... and it's ongoing.

Joe Michael Straczynski: To everyone's amazement. [Both laugh]

You've worked on my side of the fence where you're interviewing people. You've worked on the other side of the fence where you're being interviewed. You've worked in television, film...

Straczynski: So the fence is obviously the problem.

I can imagine you've had a lot of projects where you were interested—and creative people talk about it all the time where they may have a project and it falls apart and it hurts—do you have any that have really stuck in your gut? Maybe even some you wish to get back to?

Straczynski: Well, certainly. In terms of things that started and fell apart, Crusade would be an example of that—a TV show I did. In ...

Blade Runner celebrated it’s 30th anniversary at Comic-Con this year, and I was on hand during the celebratory panel to take notes of all that occurred. Art director David Snyder, journalist Paul M. Sammon (Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner), and DVD/Blu-ray producer Charles Lauzirika made up the very informal panel that basically consisted of them moderating themselves and fielding a slew of questions. The reason, according to Sammon, was because at the last panel the year before they simply had too many people on the panel and it was a slog to get the banter and information beyond the simple answers.

During the panel they talked about filming at the Bradbury Building, the replicant issue, their preferred version of the film, how they shot at night because the set wasn’t complete, where the props went, and how much deleted footage was kept off of the special features. So hit the jump for all of that and more.

Snyder started on the film in the fall of 1980. The production budget scared away the origanl financiers, Filmways. They shopped it while the producer Michael Deeley kept them able to work on the art design. All shot at night because there wasn’t enough set to make up the city. Even with the miniatures.

Sammon started out as a journarlist. But when he heard about a Philip K. Dick novel being made into the first movie, he wanted to be involved. From pre-production, to production, to post, he was there virtually every day. He ...

While the prequels have a poor reputation among many Star Wars fans, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has proven that there are worthy stories to be told within that time period. The cartoon show has introduced new characters and shown many more die. While it certainly follows Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the side characters are put in constant mortal peril and it creates a thrilling journey. Darth Maul has been revived in the series despite missing half of his torso (he’s a little stir-crazy when we first meet him), and the panel talked quite a bit about the upcoming season while also explaining the tremendous Umbara story arc that was one of the highlights of Season Four.

Instead of having the voice cast twiddle their thumbs as they rarely make creative decisions, last Saturday’s panel featured the talents of supervising director David Filoni and head writer Matt Michnovetz moderated by Star Wars author Pablo Hidalgo. Hit the jump for the full recap of one of the most lively and interesting panels at Comic-Con this year.

The panel quickly began with the trio coming out with four different Clone Troopers to racuous applause. While they were certainly game, I hope someone informed all of them that they would be standing for over 45 minutes. The best part is that they did a remarkable job of staying still and weren’t moving around a lot or fidgeting. We were also shown many clips from the last season to catch people back up. Darth Maul’s ...

Without a doubt, Adventure Time has one of the most rabid followings of any animated show currently out there. If you’ve been to Comic-Con, you likely have seen a ton of Finn, Jake, or Fionna outfits. The cartoon smartly appeals to boys, girls, and men and women with a zany world and fun story that builds on itself. Oh, and not to mention a catch-phrase that you can say to any fan that they will immediately respond to. This was one of my most-anticipated panels in San Diego this year and as a new fan I was not disappointed Saturday afternoon. Creator and voice of Lumpy Space Princess Pendleton Ward was on hand to moderator the panel filled with songwriter Rebecca Sugar, Jeremy Shada (Finn), John DiMaggio (Jake), and Tom Kenny (Ice King). Hit the jump for the panel highlights, the radio play audio, and a full description of the upcoming Flame Princess episode clip shown.

I think it's only fair that we start off with the audio of the radio play, as that was how the panel started as well. Also, note that this was performed live, and DiMaggio had to voice Beemo. Click here to listen.

During the Flame Princess clip we see Finn helping to build her a home of sorts. The “house” looks like a camp fire, and they are right by a cliff overhanging a large body of water. I don’t recognize the area. She morphs into a giant flame and says she loves the new place. ...

Greetings, Programs! Room 6A on Friday morning was treated to an in-depth and detailed look at the upcoming episodes of TRON: Uprising, one of my favorite animated shows on television right now. If you loved the look and feel of TRON: Legacy, this show definitely has you covered. However, for those that really wanted the mythology of Tron explored, this show fits that bill as well. The show picks up not long before Legacy and tells the story of Tron’s first renegade alliance with a fellow program. For fans, we were treated to a sneak peek at an excellent episode that will showcase how Tron got his distinctive scar and how he eventually turned bad. Hit the jump for a full panel recap.

Moderating the panel was a sweaty but enthusiastic Josh Dickey, the film editor for Variety. He started the panel off by simply gushing on the TRON property and how he saw the original at 10 years old and it blew his mind. He loves this melding of man and machine, and how it isn’t that far off. Josh then introduced the entire panel, starting with creator and showrunner Charlie Bean, producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, actor Elijah Wood (Beck), Bruce Boxleitner (Tron), Tricia Helfer (The Grid), art designer Alberto Nielgo and lead character designer Rob Valley. We were then treated to a sizzle reel bringing fans up to speed and showing some of the best moments. I really think they did this to show off the awesome ...

M. Night Shyamalan is not a popular director right now, as evidenced by the boos as soon as his name appeared on screen, but the world writer Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) is building in After Earth might be enough to overcome that. In Room 6A today a lively panel ensued discussing the film and the heights they hope to reach. While sometimes they like to usher out big names for these panels, this was strictly the creative talent. Joining Whitta on stage was cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and writers Robert Greenberger and Michael Freedman. Also on stage was author and After Earth bible co-creator Peter David and Dynamite comic book illustrator Beni Lobel. While what was shown might not convince someone, it was enough to shift my interest level to elevated. Hit the jump to find out more about the reveals and all the work the crew did to give us a fully realized story that isn’t written on the fly.

Hitting theaters on June 7th, 2013, After Earth follows Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son Kitai (Jaden Smith), who, 1000 years after everyone has left Earth, crash land. Cypher is injured and has to guide Kitai using navigation as he battles the elements of a very hostile planet. They started the panel off by showing a lot of concept art alongside a mini documentary about the making of the film. Some highlights were all the preparation Jaden Smith went through including parkour training and double-blade weapons combat and ...

Music is an incredibly important factor in film and television. That goes without saying, really, but discussions of music in depth and detail with the composers and collaborators that produce the music are rarely done. That’s why Room 5AB was a treat last night, as composer Blake Neely and executive producer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow), composer Chris Lennertz and showrunner Eric Kripke (Revolution, Supernatural), composer Joseph Trapanese and showrunner Charlie Bean (TRON: Uprising), and composer Nathan Johnson and director Rian Johnson (Looper) joined moderators Anne Cecere, director of film and TV relations of BMI, and Chandler Poling, founder of White Bear PR, to talk about music’s role in TV and movies. Hit the jump for a full recap.

One of the biggest highlights of the panel was the actual start, as Bruce Boxleitner, who voices the character of Tron in the TRON films and TV show, introduced the panel with a few words on why he thinks music is so essential. Starting off with questions about how they got involved with their respective projects, Marc Guggenheim praised Neely because they no longer use temp music as a placeholder. They can send him rough cuts and he will play with it, right there, and compose on the fly. Even if it ends up being a placeholder in the end, they don’t outsource the music. Neely also told a story about how he knew Arrow was a CW show, and there was a four-minute training sequence in an episode. He kept skipping over it ...

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a big part of my childhood. I grew up in this sweet spot where the cartoon was incredibly popular and we got the first few movies and a slew of video games. I entered into Friday’s panel at Room 6BCF with hesitation. A few animated films that never took off and some jittery cartoon series have since come out and I’ve grown older. I can safely say, though, that while there are some big changes afoot, I think showrunner Ciro Neili knows just what buttons to push to revitalize this franchise. During a lively panel we were shown some brief character intros, Neili’s concept art, clips of test footage, and much more. Jason Biggs (Leonardo), Rob Paulsen (Donatello), Sean Astin (Raphael), Greg Cipes (Michaelangelo), Mae Whitman (April O’Neil), Hoon Lee (Splinter), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Shredder) were all on hand to share their experiences and individual love for the property. Hit the jump for more details.

First off, let’s get the release date out of the way. September 29th, 2012 is the day to mark on your calendar, though they weren’t set to reveal the show time. Second, I think the blend of animation is quite interesting. Neili is clearly a fan of animation, anime, and comics. This can be seen in dramatic moments of levity when a character’s face will suddenly be super-imposed on a blank background with a flat, dramatically large facial expression. He loves the classic bandaged aesthetics but he also enjoyed being ...

Special features are a highlight of buying a home video these days for myself and many others. Sometimes it can make the purchase worthy of the monetary value itself. You can read as much as you want, but nothing compares to a visual medium explaining, showing, and telling you about a favorite film or television show. Earlier today at Comic-Con I had the pleasure of sitting in during a special feature discussion in Room 5AB. The panel began with moderator Bill Hunt introducing his compatriots at Digital Bits, Todd Doogan and Dr. Adam Jahnke. He also went down the panel further, introducing Charles de Lauzirika (Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man), Cliff Stephenson (The Hunger Games), Robert Meyer Burnett (Star Trek: The Next Generation-Seasons One and Two), and Warner Home Video's former senior VP of theatrical catalog marketing and current head of digital distribution, George Feltenstein. Legal battles, film restoration, and the struggles to turn around a DVD and Blu-ray with special features already included before a film even hits theaters were among the topics discussed. Hit the jump for more.

The panel started off with Burnett showing off a clip of a 75-minute Star Trek reunion conversation with a slew of the cast and crew. The small portion shown was enough to convince me it would be illuminating and entertaining. On the special features work and the entire process, Burnett said that it was “nothing short of astonishing” and that “no expense was spared.” Next-Gen was originally posted on video, with no ...

Sometimes a film makes you wonder if Hollywood truly is running out of ideas. Or maybe director James McTeigue just wanted to put John Cusack in period dress and the Sherlock Holmes franchise was already taken. Tone-deaf, The Raven squanders an intriguing idea with dull action set pieces and an unfocused theme. The plot revolves around grisly murders that replicate Edgar Allan Poe’s most horrific works in an attempt to get the not-so-famous Poe to solve the case in Baltimore. For those unaware, this isn’t based on a true story. Hit the jump for my full review.

Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) is a down-and-out, underappreciated writer languishing in 18th century Baltimore. He can barely afford a drink at a bar and when he attempts to find people that have heard of his work he is met with crickets. Then he finds a fan he wishes he hadn’t. A spree of murders that bear a remarkable resemblance to Poe’s work leads to him being implicated, but Inspector Emmett Fields (an intense Luke Evans) and him begin to work together when it becomes clear someone has a twisted sense of fandom. Poe takes a slight interest in the case but when his forbidden love Emily (Alice Eve) becomes the damsel in distress, the stakes are raised to a new level. Fields and Poe must race against time to solve the intricate clues that touch on several literary works in order to stop the criminal and save the girl.

There’s little secret that McTeigue’s ...

Following three seniors trying to throw a party that will get them noticed once and for all, they end up losing control and everything turns into absolute chaos as it expands. However, that’s after they have a whole hell of a lot of fun getting there. Unfortunately, like waking up with a hangover, the ending of this film almost ruins what happened before. Almost. Hit the jump for my full review.

Thomas (Thomas Mann) has been coasting through his high school years. He gets good grades but is otherwise uninteresting. His two best friends, JB (Jonathan Daniel Brown) and Costa (Oliver Cooper), are similarly unknown but for Thomas’ 17th birthday they hope to change all that by throwing the craziest house party while his parents are out celebrating their anniversary. Costa insists that the whole experience be filmed as well, so they enlist a loner named Dax (Dax Flame) that likes to film stuff. What could go wrong? Well, that’s before Costa, the real mastermind behind the party, uses all of his abilities to expand the fun well beyond Thomas’ limit of 50 people. From there, things just spiral out of ...

The world really couldn't care less. That’s the opinion of Joe Carnahan’s The Grey, a bleak and gritty look at survival in the middle of Alaska’s harsh wilderness. This is man versus nature to an extreme extent, and there exists few gimmicks. Carnahan seems to have taken a back to basics approach and delivers the goods. Considering his past few films and their loud, cartoonish ways, there is an odd confidence that the course he is on is something worth sticking with. Liam Neeson is a standout among his fellow survivors, but everything works towards a common goal that doesn’t feel hampered by conventions. While it may be bleak, the journey is entertaining because of all the surprises and the sheer quality of the product. Hit the jump for my full review.

Drillers in the middle of Alaska are on their way back to Anchorage for a journey home or the next tour of duty, but that all goes terribly wrong. The crew’s airline crash lands in the middle of Alaska with little hope of rescue, and things are about to get a whole lot worse. Ottway (Neeson), who had been tasked with keeping the wildlife away from the drilling site, rounds up the other survivors to find the best course of action. The bodies strewn across the crash site have attracted the attention of wolves, and they slowly realize their best hope is to get out of the area. Unfortunately, Mother Nature is an unrelenting beast and the crew are ...

Sometimes men fight just to fight. Tempers flare and punches are thrown, and a lot of time the biggest damage is done to egos more than anything else. Filmmaker Ian Palmer found a situation in Ireland where much more damage is done to the bodies and the faces of the fighters that live in a constant sort of conflict with neighboring families. Called Travellers, Gypsies, or any number of things, these nomadic people have long-standing feuds that are settled with individual fights between two representatives of a family in a somewhat civilized stand-up fist fight. Over the course of more than a decade Palmer followed the Quinn McDonaghs and their champion, James, and compiled a documentary simply titled Knuckle, which opens in limited release this weekend and on VOD. Earlier this year I had the chance to sit down with James Quinn McDonagh and Ian, and after the jump you can read the entire interview about this compelling, troubling, and challenging film.

Collider: This film is very much set in Ireland. Very much set across the ocean. You're coming a long way to promote this film. I'm curious how your family has reacted to this. It seems to me that your family is very close but they would be wary of all of this attention. What has their reaction been?

James Quinn McDonagh: They're very aware of what I say and do. Because of Knuckle, and they've all seen Knuckle, and because of the way Ian has done it and we trusted ...

Sometimes a memoir has to be taken with a grain of salt. In My Week With Marilyn, a retelling of a young man who has the time of his life on and off-set with Marilyn Monroe, things can become a bit eye-rolling. How much actually happened manages to be less important. What is essential is a small glimpse into something we may already know but remains heartbreaking nonetheless: Marilyn was an imperfect creature trying to keep from being swallowed alive by her fame. Despite not answering much of the whys and remaining mostly fluff, director Simon Curtis gives Michelle Williams the daunting task of playing Monroe near the peak of her popularity and she nails it. You can look at stills as much as you want, but the moving image allows Williams to blend into the role and become something audiences can fall in love with all over again. Hit the jump for my full review.

Young Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) wants to get out from under the shadow of his wealthy family and so he sets off to work in film. He is given the role of third assistant director (a glorified gofer) on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, a 1957 film from director/co-star Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). As if that wasn't enough, Olivier's co-star is the effervescent Marilyn Monroe, arriving in Britain to expand her brand and become a “real” actress. She is encircled by enablers (Dominic Cooper and Toby Jones) and is freshly married, ...

Coming out of Fantastic Fest this year, one of my biggest surprises was how much I enjoyed a film I had heard very little about called Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within. The fact that it was a sequel had me weary. Why would I drop in the middle of a story? But then the buzz picked up, and I heard multiple people recommend it without the pretense of seeing the first film. Luckily enough, director Jose Padilha's political thriller gives you enough of a foothold to not feel lost while also providing a living, breathing world filled with corruption and violence. So when I had the chance to speak with the director I had to accept. After the break you can read the complete transcript as we talk about the hype surrounding the film now, the disparity between the first film's ticket sales and the second, the extreme measures they took to protect the film, how he struck a balance between a message and entertainment, and whether Elite Squad 3 is a possibility.

This has obviously played at a couple of other festivals. What has the experience been like coming from different festivals? Has it been a hype train of sorts?

JOSE PADILHA: This movie has gotten a lot of... It opened in Brazil, and it's biggest grossing movie ever in South America. Including Avatar. So it did well. We opened the film in Brazil thinking it was going to sell 4 million, 5 million tickets, which is already great, for ...

I understand the allure of musicals, but the general idea behind a film with dancing as its selling point has always left me on the outside. You see, I can't dance. At all. I can't sing either, but singing isn't nearly as popular as getting out on a dance floor and shaking it to some music. Yet that hasn't stopped me from enjoying the remake of the 1984 classic Footloose. While a lot of the themes and ideas may feel fit for the current MTV generation (do they even listen to music on that channel anymore?), Craig Brewer's version is a rocking good time that will have you tapping your toes and nodding your head. Although the plot may not win any awards, it never treads down the path of utter ineptitude as much as it might in lesser hands. The premise was always hard to swallow, yet it is pulled off with a wink, a smile, and some actual sincerity. Hit the jump for my full review.

Some people are going to come into this movie with honest qualms. I had them myself. Early word had pegged the film as surprisingly good. The trailers I had seen gave me little hope, however, and when I first heard the positive reactions I laughed them off as overzealous fans of the original. Yet that positive word of mouth kept coming in, and by the time I sat down I was still doubtful but not dreading the worst.

Teenager Ren McCormack (Kenny Wormald) has ...

I find myself lost trying to wrap my head around the tension built in Sleep Tight. While the film may lack more than one thrilling action sequence, it doesn’t lack for thrills. We are introduced to a world where a man who cannot feel joy takes some semblance of it by torturing those that have it. A melding of an invasion thriller with a slow building revenge aspect thrown in makes for a short and satisfying film. Jaume Balagueró is best known for co-directing the awesome [Rec] and [Rec] ² horror flicks, and he brings the single setting of a vertical shaft apartment building back into the fold. Whether that was his influence or the writer’s is inconsequential. He knows how to play within these confines, and Sleep Tight benefits from it. Hit the jump for my full review.

César is a loner that takes a keen interest in the lives of the people in the apartment complex he takes care of. However, he has a secret fascination with one tenant in particular: the beautiful Clara. Every night, he sneaks up to her room, waits underneath her bed, drugs her with chloroform, and sleeps next to her. Sometimes he does more than this, but it becomes less about what and more about why. As we learn who he is we also see the results of his actions. His plan isn’t flawless. There is a young tenant across the hall from Clara that starts to blackmail César, which raises the intensity because ...
