PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES Blu-ray Review

Attempting to piggyback on the success of the Paranormal Activity franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones looked to expand on the universe presented in the previous films, this time targeting the rapidly growing Latino demographic.  Using a cast comprised primarily of Latino actors and presenting cultural beliefs that resonate within that community, The Marked Ones succeeded in putting a twist to a franchise that was becoming a bit repetitive in terms of storytelling.  At first glance, the film presents a different world than what we’re used to but it’s not until you’re deeper into the story and more revelations come to light, that everything begins to unravel.  It ultimately ties in nicely to the original.  Hit the jump to read my Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Blu-ray review.

In the wake of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963, the country went into a frenzy as news stations produced headline after headline—accurate and inaccurate—of what had occurred at Dealey Plaza that afternoon.  But what happened amidst the chaos of one of the most devastating events in US history and how did those involved in the event respond?  Parkland delves into the aftermath, giving viewers insight into the lives of those closest to the tragedy and following them in a span of four days.  From the nurses and doctors who tended to a wounded President Kennedy to the Secret Service agents responsible for protecting him, and the infamous Abraham Zapruder who captured everything on his 8mm camera, the film focuses on the stories within the news headlines.  More after the jump.

THE HOST Blu-ray Review

Whether you’re part of the Twilight craze or not, it’s difficult to escape the world-wide phenomenon and not take notice of the names that brought the series to life.  Such is the case of writer Stephenie Meyer, who after skyrocketing to fame due to the immense popularity of the series, is still very much a household name even when her projects don’t include bloodsuckers and naive 17-year-old girls.  It’s not a stretch to assume that her previous repertoire was the basis for bringing her 2008 sci-fi novel The Host to the big screen earlier this year.  Unlike her previous work, The Host is a mixture of science fiction and romance that essentially explores the idea of two separate identities in one body.  While the narrative portrayal had its flaws, the subject-matter made the story gripping and entertaining.  Hit the jump for my review of The Host on Blu-ray.

IDENTITY THIEF Blu-ray Review

Seth Gordon’s Identity Thief was definitely no Horrible Bosses.  Sure, it was funny and quirky, but to watch this film with the expectations that it will be something equally, if not funnier than Horrible Bosses, will lead to a giant letdown.  Identity Thief stars, Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, do a superb job at playing these characters to their best of their comical abilities, but there is such thing as something being “too ridiculous” and Identity Thief manages to go there.  Funny?  Yes.  Hilarious?  Not so much.  I was, however, pleasantly surprised by the way the film was able to turn McCarthy’s character from an obnoxious criminal to a relatable and heartwarming troubled woman.  Hit the jump for my review of Identity Thief on Blu-ray.

Sundays at Comic-Con tend to be the slowest of all four days, with the event coming to an end at an earlier time (5pm), most of the attendees choose to walk the floor and make their last-minute purchases before heading home.  Regardless, fans still have plenty to see, and even with popular hit TV shows dominating the monstrous Hall H, CBS’ newest sci-fi drama, Under the Dome, was still able to find its place amongst attendees.  Producers Brian K. Vaughan and Neal Baer, accompanied by stars Rachelle Lefevre, Dean Norris, and Mike Vogel, hit the Comic-Con stage to discuss the current season, provide insight into the characters, and tease what’s coming up in future episodes.  Hit the jump for highlights from the panel.
