This afternoon at a gathering of The National Press Club, during some lobbying for Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit group that advocates for increased federal funding of the arts, The Huffington Post reports that Alec Baldwin dropped some good and bad news for fans of the NBC comedy series 30 Rock. Apparently the actor will definitely be sticking around for the series’ entire seventh season this fall, but apparently that season of the Tina Fey show will be the last. Honestly, it makes sense considering the show would really lose one of its strongest parts if Baldwin were to really leave, and seven seasons is enough for almost any series, especially a comedy that runs an average of 24 episodes a season. The series is still going strong with outrageous jokes and hilarity, and while I’ll be sad to see it go, I’d rather see it finish on top rather than puttering out and getting canceled.

Before he was the nerdy and naive Troy on Community, comedian Donald Glover was making a career for himself as a writer on 30 Rock. The actor can even be heard on character Tracy Jordan’s (played by Tracy Morgan) holiday song Werewolf Bar Mitzvah (one of my favorite gags to come out of the hilarious series). Now Glover will have a more prominent role as a guest star on the new forthcoming live episode of 30 Rock this month. TV Line has word that Glover will play a young version of Tracy Jordan. This will happen on the live episode which will air on April 26th. Apparently Glover’s impression of Tracy Jordan (who is basically a somewhat exaggerated version of Tracy Morgan) is almost perfect to the point that he even finished some of Morgan’s vocals on the aforementioned spooky, scary song when Morgan wasn’t available. Can you tell the difference when listening to the entire track after the jump?

With all the success that AMC has found with The Walking Dead from creator Robert Kirkman, it’s no surprise that the cable network is eager to work with him on another series. AMC is developing a series adaptation of the Image Comics and Skybound title Thief of Thieves, a story which follows a master thief with a dual identity who, while struggling to quit the business, opts to steal only what has already been stolen. How did Kyle Killen (of Awake and Lone Star) not get in on this series?

Well that took a little longer than expected. Following the record-breaking ratings after the second season premiere, HBO has finally announced that they have renewed Game of Thrones for a third season. Network president Michael Lombardo says, “Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season – and then surpassed them. We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.” Check out the tease of the coming season right here, and if you haven’t yet, feel free to read my review of the second season premiere. Hit the jump for the press release.

Before the season is even over, Fox is already looking to the future and just announced renewal for three of the network’s top comedy series. The musical series Glee, the freshman series New Girl, and the family comedy Raising Hope have all been renewed for another season.
Frankly, New Girl is the most thrilling announcement as it’s easily the best new comedy of the past season, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the fall. Meanwhile, Glee has been trying my patience, and I don’t think I’ll be tuning in next season unless the end of this third season is top notch. Raising Hope just hasn’t fit into my viewing schedule, but if it’s getting a third season, maybe I’ll have to catch up. Either way, it sounds like Fox is pretty happy with its Tuesday comedy line-up. After unveiling a new promo for the fifth season of True Blood and the first full trailer for the Aaron Sorkin scripted drama series The Newsroom, HBO has announced the premiere dates for both summer series. First, True Blood will make it’s triumphant return to the network on Sunday, June 10th at 9/8c. There hasn’t been much of a hint of what’s coming this season from the aforementioned promo, so fans should keep their eyes peeled for more info.
As for the freshman series The Newsroom, it was premiere on Sunday, June 24th at 10/9c. The series centers on a cable news anchor (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), his newsroom staff (John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel, Olivia Munn) and their boss (Sam Waterston). Together they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal relationships. If you missed them, hit the jump to check out the new trailers for both series.

As if there was any doubt that the second season premiere of Game of Thrones would be big, the ratings are in just to make a point. EW reports the return to Westeros was the most watched program on Sunday night, even beating out AMC’s longer running drama Mad Men and the NCAA’s March Madness basketball match-ups. The premiere garnered 3.86 million viewers which is not only a new high for the entire series, but also a new high among viewers 18 to 49, a demographic which helped make Game of Thrones the most popular show that night. The series is up a whopping 73% from the premiere last year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the announcement of renewal for a third season came within the week.
In the meantime, check out the preview of things to come in this second season, which aired after the premiere on Sunday, right after the jump. You can also read my review of the premiere here.

With the second season premiere of Game of Thrones (read my review here) putting all eyes on HBO, the network has been busy promoting all their forthcoming shows with new teasers for True Blood and the Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama The Newsroom showing up. Now we have another quick tease for the third season of Boardwalk Empire. There’s no footage from the new season, but an intimidating voiceover from Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson which promises some big changes this fall. Watch the teaser trailer after the jump!

With Mark Addy and Sean Bean having their characters going with the gods last season, when the opening credits for Game of Thrones roll this time around, it’s Peter Dinklage, playing Tyrion Lannister, whose name comes up first, and it’s only appropriate as he is the strongest part of the first two episodes of the highly anticipated second season. But that’s not to say the rest of the premiere is weak; far from it. In fact, the second season is merely more of the same in the best way possible as it picks up almost immediately after the end of the first season as war begins between the Lannisters and the Starks and the stakes and drama have never been higher. And along with all the familiar faces fighting for their families honor and respect amongst the rest of the kingdoms, there’s plenty of new characters to keep things interesting. Read my full take on the second season premiere of Game of Thrones after the jump.

Just as the series did back in 2010, 30 Rock is going even more meta again as the series, which has a sketch show similar to Saturday Night Live inside of the series (Inception!), will be doing another live episode. Tina Fey took on the task back in 2010, and now on Thursday, April 26th, the show will again be live from Studio 8H.
When their Kabletown bosses announce they will no longer pay for TGS to be a live show, Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) and Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) realize their lives will actually be easier if they shoot canned episodes fast and cheap. Only Kenneth the Page (Jack McBrayer) objects, urging that nothing can replace the communal experience of live television. He tries to convince the TGS staff to fight for their right to be live by taking them and our audience through a magical look back at the illustrious history of Studio 6H. See what they did there? The episode will be done twice so both East and West coast audiences get the live treatment. The first live episode was a great success and it was clear the cast was having a lot of fun. There were plenty of cameos as well and this one should be no different.

The seventh season isn’t finished yet, and it actually isn’t returning from a quick break until April 2nd, but Fox just announced that Bones has been picked up for an eighth season already where it will hit a milestone 150 episodes. Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, says, “Over the past seven seasons, Hart Hanson, Stephen Nathan and the incredible Bones cast and crew have redefined the traditional crime procedural with an irreverent and adventurous sensibility and I’m really happy to have this distinctive, fan-favorite on our schedule for another season.” However, if it’s only one season, I’m wondering if this could be the last season for Bones, much like this eighth season for House M.D. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Perhaps looking to fill the void left by the conclusion of Friday Night Lights, the Emmy powerhouse that is AMC is crafting their own football based drama series. THR has word that the cable network behind Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead is in the early development stages of putting together The Real All-Americans, an adaptation of Sally Jenkins‘ book about the football program created by U.S. cavalry officer Richard Henry Pratt at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The series would follow Pratt, an abolitionist and early equal rights proponent who made a harrowing journey to the Dakota Territory in 1879 to recruit the school’s first students. More details after the jump.

With Smash making me feel less insecure about watching a musical TV series, since it’s much more mature and adult-oriented, I’ve basically only given Glee a small amount of attention and not much thought. However, some new guest stars should make for an interesting turn this season. TV Line has two different reports that reveal both Whoopi Goldberg and Lindsay Lohan will show up on the series before the third season ends. If you don’t want to know any details about their characters, do not continue reading after the jump.

Ahead of the announced April 1st release of HBO Go for XBOX Live members and cable subscribers, the cable TV app goes live today with some company. Major Nelson also revealed that Xfinity TV and MLB TV will be coming along for the ride. HBO’s entire show and film catalog is now available on the XBOX 360 for Live and HBO subscribers, so if you need to catch up on Game of Thrones before the second season premiere this Sunday or just watch some old episodes of Entourage of Curb Your Enthusiasm, then the world is your oyster. Xfinity also has a decent size collection of TV series and movies for your pleasure, and while MLB TV is probably cool for sports fans, that’s not really our bag here. Anyway, check out the full press release after the jump and get that XBOX 360 updated!
[Note from Matt: Xfinity subscribers won't have access to HBO GO. Comcast customer service can't do anything to change this, so if you want HBO GO, tell corporate: 215-286-1700 or e-mail corporate_communications@comcast.com]

Last month the developing NBC pilot Revolution from J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production banner landed one lead actor in the form of Breaking Bad villain Giancarlo Esposito, and now another actor has entered the mix as well. Deadline reports The Twilight Saga star Billy Burke has landed another lead role in the potential series as Miles, an amazingly resourceful man with dark and dangerous side. The pilot has already been in production and had even cast Burke in the supporting role of a charismatic Marine, but then producers decided they wanted Burke in a much more integral role with his former part currently being recast. For those just joining us, the series follows a group of people struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.
