Years from now, I suspect that critics will look back and declare the 2013-2014 film season as “The Year of the McConaughey.”  After a decade of squandering his acting chops and Southern drawl in mediocre Kate Hudson rom-coms, McConaughey has had the ultimate breakout season, with Mud, HBO’s wildly popular True Detective, and his upcoming lead in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Interstellar.  Garnering rave reviews and earning him a Best Actor nomination, Dallas Buyers Club is yet another exceptional standout in McConaughey’s recent breakout.  Hit the jump to read my Blu-ray review of the film.

Live in the moment.  In itself, this adage is positive and helpful, but can it go too far?  Can people invest themselves so much in the present that it becomes a detriment to their future?  This is the question raised by James Ponsoldt’s (Smashed) brilliant love story film, The Spectacular Now.  Hit the jump to read my Blu-ray review of the movie.

by     Posted 1 year, 161 days ago

For fans of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek adaptations, I bring good news: Zachary Quinto thinks the next Star Trek sequel will begin filming next year.  On the heels of Into Darkness’s success in grossing $444 million worldwide, Paramount Pictures is looking to begin production on Star Trek 3 sooner rather than later.  Apparently, Abrams is also looking to direct the sequel, although, this raises many questions given his current schedule shooting Star Wars Episode VII. Watch the First Trailer for the Japanese Remake of Clint Eastwood’s UNFORGIVEN Starring Ken Watanabe

by     Posted 1 year, 161 days ago

The first full-length trailer for the official Japanese remake of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven was just released, receiving lots of positive buzz.  Starring the exceptional Ken Watanabe (Inception) as Eastwood’s character, the trailer looks as if it captures the tone of the original in a beautiful Japanese landscape.  I was a big fan of Eastwood’s Unforgiven, because it was a gritty, violent film in which the actor effectively deconstructed the stylized superficiality present in much of his earlier Western filmography.  The tone was essentially one of guilt for having misled audiences by confusing violence with heroism.  This new trailer seems to show the same emotion and grit, and all with gorgeous cinematography.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Koichi Sato as Gene Hackman’s character and Akira Emoto as Morgan Freeman’s character.  The cast ensemble also includes Jun Kunimura, Yuya Yagira and Shiori Kutsuna.  The film is slated for a Japanese release on September 13th, 2013.

THE CROW Looking to Fly into Production With Luke Evans as New Lead

by     Posted 1 year, 231 days ago

After studio lawsuits, and a great deal of rumors and fallout with various actors, the Welsh actor Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6) has taken the lead in director F. Javier Gutierrez’s (Before the Fall) upcoming remake of The Crow.  As we previously reported, actors Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), and James McAvoy (X-Men: Days of Future Past) were all rumored for the role, but it looks like it’s Evan who will ultimately be starring.  Allegedly, Evans was originally courted for the lead, but at the time he was unable to commit due to his busy schedule.  The actor is currently signed on, however, now that Relativity Media has agreed to push back the start date to early next year.  Hit the jump for more details on Evans and his role in the film.

Mike Nichols in Talks to Direct Adaptation of Jonathan Tropper Novel ONE LAST THING BEFORE I GO

by     Posted 1 year, 242 days ago

Legendary director Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Closer) is currently in talks to possibly direct One Last Thing Before I Go, a film adaptation of author Jonathan Tropper’s novel of the same name.  J.J. Abrams will be producing the film under his company Bad Robot.  Adapted for Paramount Studios, One Last Thing Before I Go tells the story of a washed up rock band drummer named Drew Silver who tries to reconnect with his soon-to-be-remarried ex-wife and his estranged, pregnant daughter.  This project would be unique for Nichols, not only because it would be his first film since 2007’s Charlie Wilson’s War, but also because it would be a reunion with Abrams, who wrote the screenplay for Nichols’s 1991 drama Regarding Henry, starring Harrison Ford.  [Editor's note: No deal or offer are on the table as of yet.] Hit the jump for a plot synopsis and more details on the film.

New Character Posters RED 2 Featuring Bruce Willis and John Malkovich

by     Posted 1 year, 242 days ago

A couple of new character posters have been released for director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) Red 2, a much-anticipated sequel to an indulgently fun summer blockbuster franchise.  The new posters showcase stars Bruce Willis and John Malkovich in all of their “retired” glory.  The sequel finds Frank Moses (Willis) pitted against Victoria (Helen Mirren) when M16 gives the go ahead to his assassination by declaring him Interpol’s “most wanted.” All the while, Moses and his team work to track down a missing nuclear device.  Mary-Louise Parker will return while Catherine Zeta Jones, Byung Hun, and Anthony Hopkins join the cast.

Although Red 2 looks indulgent (much like The Expendables franchise), we all can admit that we like to watch Willis blow stuff up and we enjoy seeing Malkovich, well, be himself.  Hit the jump to check out the new posters and to read the full synopsis.  Red 2 opens on July 19th.
