In a world where new generations of kids have been growing with Pixar films since the mid 90′s, it’s easy to forget that Disney’s traditionally animated features were once the standard against which all children’s films were measured. Well Disney is looking to earn some of that 2D clout back with the release of “The Princess and the Frog”, a film that is promised to return to the glory days of Disney hand-drawn musical animation. Set in the bayous of New Orleans in the the early 1900′s, the film tells the story of a prince turned into a frog by the film’s voodoo-practicing villain who attempts to return to human form by receiving a kiss from a beautiful young “princess”, but things don’t exactly pan out. Hit the jump (it’s a frog, get it?) to see a three and a half minute clip from the film, and a cool story featurette.

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…That’s right boys and girls of Elm Street! The bastard son of a hundred maniacs is coming back to theaters next spring, and after months of waiting, all those who didn’t have the pleasure of attending the panel at last July’s San Diego Comic-Con finally have their first look of the new face of the dream demon in this fantastic trailer for the Platinum Dunes remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, set to terrorize screens in April, 2010. So it’s pretty much common knowledge that a film chronicling the life and times of Playboy founder and Viagra enthusiast Hugh Hefner has been in the works for a long while now. While an announcement was made some time ago that scribe John Hoffman was set to tackle the script for director Brett Ratner (thing’s got class written all over it), it now seems that a new writer is being courted to pen the screen play for the long gestating biopic. A writer who’s name just screams “period piece about a smooth, urbane, swinging businessman who created the ultimate gentleman’s periodical,”… Diablo Cody. Yes, you read that right. Straighten your ears and bow tie, and go ahead and hit the jump to read more.

Form up, Voltron fans, and get ready for a rigorous wad of legal jargon which pretty much does nothing but to confirm what we already knew: The Voltron feature film is in the 9th circle of development hell, and probably won’t be resurfacing any time soon. More after the jump.

Every once in a while, you hear a piece of movie news that makes you go, “WTF?” Then, after a few seconds of letting it sink in, you go, “WTF?” and eventually after you go through that cycle a few more times, you start to think maybe it sounds like a good idea. In this case, that news is the casting of The Rock (I know he likes to go by Dwayne Johnson now, but seriously dude, you’re The Rock, live with it), Steve Coogan and movie geek god emeritus, Samuel L. Jackson in a new film by “Anchorman” director, Adam McKay which also stars Will Ferrell and Marky Mark, he also goes by a more respectable name now, but people don’t forget, Mark. Few films have ever been as universally well received as J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek”, a terrific scifi action flick that captured the attention of long time Trekers and at the same time satisfied general audiences with its dazzling effects, charismatic leads, dynamic direction, and tell me warp didn’t kick your ass. So it comes as no surprise that sequel rumblings have started spreading throughout the interwebs. But now, we have solid talk from the filmmakers themselves about what a sequel to the successful series reboot, with director J.J. Abrams and writer Roberto Orci talking about the follow up. Perhaps the most surprising news is some of the directions discussed for the next film, which could involve an exploration of current themes of terrorism and politicized war, according to Orci, saying “We’re trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of what’s going on today as possible. So that’s one thing, to make it reflect the things that we are all dealing with today“. For more from Orci and Abrams, as well as more potential story ideas, gun it to maximum warp and hit the jump.

You may recall our coverage of new DC Entertainment President, Diane Nelson’s, plan for the future direction of her division. Well, news is coming down the pipe that that new direction does not include The Man of Steel, as Nelson confirms that there are no present plans to bring the Last Son of Krypton to the silver screen in the near future. “We’ve obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it’s a key part of our family,” says Nelson, “but we don’t have current plans behind Superman.” This comes as something of a surprise after all the talk about the future of the franchise, from James McTiegue’s comments on what he would do with the property, to comic writer Mark Millar’s constant threats to write a screenplay to reboot the series. From the horse’s mouth, it seems that The Man with the Hat is gearing up for another global adventure in the next few years. Harrison Ford says that work on the story for the fifth “Indiana Jones” film has started and that George Lucas is currently at work on a treatment after the he, Steven Spielberg, and Ford agreed on a general story idea. Ford says, “If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put on the costume again.” Another film was almost a no brainer financially after the strong box office showing of 2008′s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which had an opening weekend gross of over $126 million and a final gross of $317 million on an estimated $185 million budget. Money is one thing, however, as the critical and fan response to the film was lackluster at best. Grab your whip and hit the jump to read more.

Digital 3D is about to get a huge boost thanks to JP Morgan. One of the obstacles in preventing 3D from catching on in a big bad way is the relatively small number of theaters that are set up with the necessary equipment. Well that’s about to change with news that the aforementioned firm will be sending out briefing books for over $525 million to the country’s three largest theater chains (Regal, AMC, and Cinemark). This will result in the theater chains adding 3D embellishments to many of their technical repertoire. Hit the jump for more.

By the power of Greskull, it looks like Mattel is looking to shop the film rights to the story of Prince Adam and his continual battle to protect Castle Greyskull from the evil forces of Skeletor. The Joel Silver produced reboot of the toy-based franchise has been set up at Warner since 2007. Well now it seems the companies have mutually agreed to let Warner’s rights lapse, after failing to find a common ground on the film’s direction. For those that have lives or good taste in movies and don’t know, the He-Man property has been adapted for live action once before by Cannon films in the 1987 “Masters of the Universe”. The prospect of a new film has been on the table for quite a while now, but this development seems like it might be a bigger obstacle than both Beastman and Triclopse comin’ at ya. For more, raise your magic sword and hit the jump.

It’s been quite a while since anyone has heard anything about David Goyer’s Green Arrow prison break script, “Supermax”, so long in fact that Columbia Pictures has purchased a completely different script called “Supermax” from actor/writers Christopher Allen Nelson and Mitch Rouse. This time, the titular prison is a top secret facility designed to hold various monsters and supernatural beings. Sounds pretty damn cool to me. Hit the jump if you think so too.

With all the hubbub surrounding the Marvel and Disney deal, it’s easy to forget the deft moves Warner Brothers have been making with DC’s comics properties. After the unprecedented success the company had with Chris Nolan’s films “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight”, WB seems to taking a much more serious stance in its selection of filmmakers for these comic franchises. We have Martin Campbell, director of the two best modern Bond flicks, helming “The Green Lantern”, Guillermo del Toro producing “Deadman”, and now we can add to that list the king of Brit grit, Guy Ritchie, who’s set to take on a live action, big screen adaption of DC comics’ resident bad ass bounty hunter, “Lobo”. Hello, True Believers! Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you’ve heard about Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, all the details of which can be read here. Now, there have been a lot of panicky reactions shooting across the interwebs since this news has leaked, some concerned with the future quality of Marvel’s film properties, some concerned with the fate of the comic book wing of Marvel Entertainment, and some with Marvel’s preexisting television projects. Today, however, we have some potentially very good news for fans of TV’s “Spectacular Spider-Man” and for Spidey fans in general: Sony has relinquished all television rights for the web slinger in favor of some more favorable film options for the property. Not only does this open up the future for animated projects, but could possibly give us the opportunity for a Smallville-esque live action Spider-series. Is your spider-sense tingling? If so, hit the thwip…er…jump, for more.

Anyone who’s followed the progress of the big screen adaption of pulp hero and cult icon, “The Green Hornet” knows that the property has been repeatedly beset by hurdles and setbacks, from Kevin Smith abandoning the project a few years ago, to the more recent departure of Stephen Chow, first from the director’s chair and finally from the role of driver/sidekick, Kato. Well word has it that the flick has yet again been delayed as its July 7, 2010 release date has been moved back five months to December 17, 2010. More after the jump:
