BARNEY’S VERSION Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: August 9th, 2011 at 6:35 am

Every so often Hollywood produces a grand-scale film with a sweeping narrative and epic storyline that it becomes destined for greatness. No, not summer blockbusters, like Avatar or The Dark Night, with budgets in the hundreds of millions.  The storylines are not epic in the sense that they make way for explosions and breathtaking action, but rather they follow a simple character, and detail every little aspect of their incredible lives. Like The Cider House Rules, The World According to Garp, Forrest Gump, and countless others, these films often contain Academy Award-winning or nominated performances, and usually a best picture nomination or win. They go on to be considered classics and live on in lists detailing the best films of all time. Barney’s Version is one of these films, and it needs to be one that goes on these lists.

With its release on Blu-ray, Barney’s Version has a chance to become the hit it deserves, and gain the recognition and acclaim that are justified for such a film. If you haven’t yet seen or heard of this movie, check out the review and watch it immediately afterwards. My review of this masterpiece of cinema on Blu-ray after the jump.

Bobcat Goldthwait’s New Film GOD BLESS AMERICA to Kill Rich Bratty Teenagers

by     Posted: March 14th, 2011 at 12:12 pm

bobcat-goldthwait-slice-01

Bobcat Goldthwait, to those that still think of him as a comedian, has become a real Hollywood director in the past few years. Similar to how the current generation may know Clint Eastwood more for his work behind the camera instead of in front of it, Goldthwait will perhaps be more known for his films about bestiality, auto erotic asphyxiation, and his newest movie topic, teen murder (and that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you compare Bobcat Goldthwait to Clint Eastwood).

Goldthwait’s new film will be called God Bless America and is backed by Darko Pictures, the same company that funded Goldthwait’s previous film, World’s Greatest Dad. According to Goldthwait, the film covers what happens when you watch a show similar to MTV’s My Super Sweet 16. The show, to those blessedly unfamiliar with the program, it shows bratty, rich teenagers crying over how little diamonds are encrusted on the BMW their daddy bought them.  The film will follow “a middle aged guy…at home watching a show like My Super Sweet 16.” As you can imagine, a side effect of watching such a show would be the want to murder anyone on it. On the Adam Carolla Show [via CinemaBlend] Goldthwait explains that the man “drives 400 miles and kills that girl.” Eventually, when no one seems to mind that she is missing, the man and a classmate of the girl “get in this stolen Camaro and drive around and kill people.”  Well, I’m in.

Believe it or not, The Simpsons used to be an incredibly funny show. While it was being funny back in its prime, it was apparently also being extremely clever, so clever that its taken a decade to figure out that the McBain clips from the classic Simpsons episodes of the 90s actually come together to create a logical and entertaining short film.

Oh Simpsons, please go back to your old ways instead of loosely referencing things that exist while not adding any significant humor. Hit the jump for the full clip.

More I Love You, Man in any capacity can only be a good thing. That’s why this Funny or Die Sketch featuring Jason Segel and Paul Rudd reprising their roles as Sydney Fife and Peter Klaven is beyond amazing.

If you type in “nicknames in…” on Google the second suggestion will be “nicknames in I Love You, Man.” Not that that relates to the video, but it shows how great of a movie this was. Now hit the jump and watch as Jobin and Pistol Pete totes magotes slap-a-da-base with Rush.

Between re-releasing all six Star Wars films in 3D and fighting off rumors of resurrecting dead actors for his films, it turns out George Lucas believes that the world will end in a Roland Emmerich-esque fury in 2012.

According to Seth Rogen, “George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real. He thinks it.” Hit the jump for Rogen’s full quote.

Every once in a while comes a movie so hated by critics, so heavily criticized, and yet oddly entertaining and extremely fun to watch. While critics may take shots a movie’s plot or characters, it could still provide sufficient laughs with well written dialogue and breathtaking cinematography. While Vampires Suck is currently sitting at a 4% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems that this movie is universally hated; but is it really as bad as everyone says? Find out after the jump.

Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze, writer and director, respectively, of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation., are pitching a new movie around Hollywood. While the script hasn’t yet been written, one can be assured that it will incorporate some sort of meta or mind-meltingly incredible premise.

The plot is being kept under wraps, but seems to be separate from Kaufman’s script Frank or Francis, which he has been working on since finishing Synecdoche, New York in 2008. According to the LA Times, two people familiar with the project say that in recent weeks it has been making rounds to independent financiers. Hit the jump for more info on both projects.

Every Zombie Death in THE WALKING DEAD

The Walking Dead has been off the air for one week and I’ve already forgotten how good of a show it is. Luckily, someone has taken every gruesome, horrific, graphic, and jaw-droppingly awesome zombie death in the show and compiled them into one video. With the last two episodes of the season lacking in zombies, it’s good to be reminded just how satisfying a good harpoon to the head shot really is.

The video consists of 42 deaths, with 37 edits, spanning over the entire six-episode first season. With season two most likely not coming until next October, hit the jump for the video which will hopefully tide you over until then.

Concept Art from Bryan Singer’s SUPERMAN RETURNS Sequel and J.J. Abrams’ SUPERMAN FLYBY

In the over 70 years since Superman’s creation, there have been a plethora of attempts to bring the Man of Steel to the silver screen. From Tim Burton’s planned adaptation in the late 90s, to Kevin Smith’s attempts at a Superman that doesn’t fly in Superman Lives, there have been as many unsuccessful attempts at making Superman movies than successful ones.

A few weeks ago we showed you some costume sculpts from Tim Burton’s… not at all homoerotic attempt at a Superman film.  Now, we have new images of Doomsday concept art from a once-possible Bryan Singer-helmed Superman Returns sequel, as well as costume concept art from a scrapped 2002 J.J. Abrams project, Superman Flyby. Hit the jump for the images and some thoughts.

DEXTER Renewed for Sixth Season

by     Posted: December 2nd, 2010 at 10:51 am

Good news for Dexter fans today as a renewal for the sixth season of the hit show seems to be imminent. While two seasons were ordered back in 2008 bringing it up to the current season five, and creators talked about making a solid five seasons and ending it; Dexter will be on the air for at least one more season after this year.

With last week’s episode of Dexter earning the second highest ratings in the show’s history, THR reports that an official announcement for the renewal is expected to come shortly. Hit the jump for some of my thoughts and more info on the renewal.

Ricky Gervais, Emily Blunt and Mickey Rooney Join THE MUPPETS; Plus New Images from Set

by     Posted: December 1st, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Would anyone following Jason Segel’s The Muppets be remotely surprised if it was announced that more people have joined the cast? Today, two more names have been added to the incredibly large list of high-profile celebrities appearing in the film. Also, along with the casting news comes a bunch of new photos from the set.

Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt are the newest additions to the movie, with their roles being kept a secret. Hit the jump to see who they will be joining in this movie of which I have run out of adjectives to describe; as well as the images.

First Image and Synopsis from COMMUNITY’s Animated Christmas Episode

by     Posted: November 20th, 2010 at 10:07 am

I can tell you how Community is consistently the best show on television, or how it’s struggling for ratings and you need to watch it if you don’t already. But you’ve heard most of this, and if you watch this show in any regularity I can assure you that you will enjoy what we have for you.

Community’s December 9th Christmas episode, for the unaware, is to be entirely stop motion animation, and if we’ve learned anything from watching season 2’s theme episodes it’s that we know they can pull this off masterfully. For an early peak of what is sure to be the best Christmas present anyone can get this year, hit the jump for the first image, the synopsis, and what Dan Harmon has to say about the episode.

Just when you think Disney’s Muppets movie has a great cast of key players and cameos, they go and add more to the mix. Among the new names are Alan Arkin, Billy Crystal…and Jean-Claude Van Damme?

Last week, we got our first look at the film, followed by the news of nine actors, including John Krasinski, Paul Rudd, and Ed Helms, joining the cast (although we later discovered that Jane Lynch was not attached to the film).  Then, yesterday, more set photos came along showing Amy Adams and Jason Segel smiling it up with the new muppet, Walter. Hit the jump to find out what these new roles will be, as well as the other’s previously announced.

Larry Charles is set to direct Sacha Baron Cohen’s newest film The Dictator. The film is written by Cohen and Curb Your Enthusiasm writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel.

This will be Charles’ third directorial outing on a Cohen project, having previously hit box office gold with the hilarious Borat, and the less hilarious Bruno. According to 24 Frames, the film will be Cohen’s next project after Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret. Hit the jump for my thoughts and more info on the film.

Courtney Ford and Fiona Shaw Cast on TRUE BLOOD

by     Posted: November 12th, 2010 at 10:58 am

HBO’s True Blood is ramping up for production on its fourth season with two new actors joining the already very-large ensemble cast. Courtney Ford (Dexter), and Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter) are set to join the Southern vampire series, the new season premieres Summer 2011.

Ford, who played Trinity’s daughter on the fourth season of Dexter, will play a new character called Portia Bellefleur. The character is described as “a Southern beauty who runs her own law practice,” as well as being the sister of detective Andy Bellefleur. Shaw is set to play a “self-loathing medium who becomes possessed by a witch.” Sounds like classic True Blood to me, hit the jump for my thoughts.
