A Ben Stiller Tweet Reveals ZOOLANDER 2 Might Not Happen

Posted: May 2nd, 2010 at 6:17 pm

It looks like Derek Zoolander is so not hot right now.  Even though Ben Stiller is ready to make the sequel happen, the green light (and paper) needs to come from the suits at Paramount.  Similar to our report on the fate of our favorite chauvinistic anchorman, studio financing is not looking too good for the male model.

A recent update from Ben Stiller’s twitter (via DarkHorizons) revealed that the potential size of the budget seems to be the reason we might not be getting to see Derek challenge Hansel to another walk-off: “Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander looking to appear in sequels. Both men destitute, without means or intellect to fund their own comebacks.”

We all know how Hollywood works by now. This doesn’t mean the project is necessarily dead. Let’s hope that this is just a minor speed bump on the catwalk to Zoolander 2.

Pixar continues to impress with their clever promotional tools for the much-anticipated Toy Story 3.  Last month, we showed you some of the entertaining viral videos that have been released. If you haven’t seen them yet, make sure you check them out.

Earlier this week, a vintage toy commercial from 1983 surfaced on YouTube.  At first glance, it seems convincingly legit.  However, the product being hawked is the Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear, one of the new toys joining the gang in Toy Story 3.  The people over at Pixar Planet were able to confirm that it was in fact just another example of what the brilliant minds at Pixar are capable of coming up with. Will Mickey Rourke Take On Genghis Khan?

What’s a guy to do after he’s already done battle with a fully armored Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, teamed up with Stallone and Schwarzenegger in The Expendables, and led his fellow Greek Gods in a revolt against mankind in Immortals (a.k.a. War of the Gods)?

Why, return to the battle, of course! It seems safe to say that Mickey Rourke is experiencing more than just a comeback. His career’s second life is proving to be even more substantial than its first.   In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Rourke revealed he may be taking on the role of one of the most infamous conquerors in history of the world: Genghis Khan.   Hit the jump to find out what the always-eccentric Rourke had to say about his involvement in the film  (which is being penned and directed by John Milius of Red Dawn fame) and also, for some more insight into his awkward obsession with dogs.

TALHOTBLOND DVD Review

Talhotblond movie image (5).jpg

Talhotblond is the kind of story that you would think could only be manufactured in a Hollywood pitch meeting:  An internet love triangle that ultimately spirals out of control and results in a brutal murder.  It’s a story filled with love, passion, deceit, rage, and violence. You can practically see studio executives foaming at the mouth while the pitchman delivers the goods.  The scary thing is that this particular story isn’t fiction.

BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS DVD Review

Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans movie image - slice.jpg

Sometimes Nicolas Cage’s choice of films makes it difficult for us to remember just how good of an actor he is. Hey, a guy has to work, right?  However, Cage’s performance in Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans serves as a reminder that Cage is in fact worthy of holding the title of Academy Award winner.

Right up there with his performances in 1995′s Leaving Las Vegas and 2002′s Adaptation, Cage’s portrayal of Terrence McDonagh, the “bad lieutenant”, is something that should not be missed.  In fact, it seems almost criminal that the film only had a limited release and was overlooked completely throughout awards season. It was easily one of the best of 2009. My full review of Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans on DVD after the jump:

David Cross Says ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Film Will Not Happen

Posted: April 8th, 2010 at 4:53 pm

david_cross_image__1_.jpgFellow Arrested Development fans, it seems that the rollercoaster that is the potential big screen adaptation of this incredible television series has taken yet another turn for the worse.  Toward the end of 2009, Collider reported that creator, Mitch Hurwitz would be directing the film and also revealed a couple of potential storylines.  Everything seemed like a go for a Bluth Family reunion.

Not so fast.  In a recent interview on TVSquad.com in promotion of his upcoming stand-up special David Cross: Bigger and Blackerer, David Cross claimed that, despite all of the speculation, an AD feature film is probably not going to happen.  For more on why we might never get to see Cross in his never-nude, cutoff, denim shorts on the big screen and to read the interview in its entirety, hit the jump:

Analeigh Tipton image slice (1).jpg

Analeigh Tipton doesn’t seem to be hurting too much from her loss on the 5th season of America’s Next Top Model. Fresh off shooting a role in the Seth Rogen fueled, The Green Hornet, Tipton appears to be in final negotiations to land a role alongside Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone in the currently untitled marital crisis comedy being directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (I Love You Phillip Morris).

According to Variety, the story centers on a father whose life unravels while he deals with spousal problems and tries to manage his relationship with his children. Tipton would be playing a babysitter who develops a crush on Carell’s character while his 13-year-old son lusts after her.

Maya Rudolph Says “I Do” to Upcoming Judd Apatow Produced Wedding Comedy BRIDESMAIDS

Posted: April 2nd, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph.jpg

Maya Rudolph has just hopped on the wedding comedy bandwagon. She will be joining Kristen Wiig in the upcoming, Judd Apatow produced, Bridesmaids (also known as The Untitled Kristen Wiig Project). Production Weekly just tweeted that the Saturday Night Live alum will play the bride to be while Wiig will be playing her bridesmaid, Annie.

Normally, I run the opposite way of any movie that involves wedding humor. But with Apatow and Paul Feig (Freaks and Geeks) on board, as well as Wiig’s scene stealing performance in Knocked Up, I’ll consider this one of the exceptions.

Both Rudolph and Wigg will also be seen together onscreen in the upcoming SNL film, MacGruber.

The 3D Takeover: Is It Too Much Too Soon?

Posted: March 29th, 2010 at 11:13 am

slice_3D_glasses_01.jpg

Three-dimensional films have existed in some kind of form since early in the 20th century. The first “official” 3D film with a paying audience was The Power of Love in 1922.  They truly became a huge part of the movie watching experience in the 1950s with films like It Came From Outer Space (1953) and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). In the fifty plus years that followed, mediocre attempts at 3D films have come and gone without leaving much of an imprint on how the entertainment industry approached filmmaking.

It’s no secret that the 2009 release of Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time, has officially changed the way the industry is viewing the entire film production process.  The film that took over 15 years to complete has the studios and their filmmakers scrambling to deliver what they feel the public now expects: more groundbreaking and visually engulfing, 3-D films.   The uncanny success of Avatar has caused most of Hollywood to jump to conclusions over 3D films.  But with the onslaught of reality 3D (Jackass 3, U2 3D, Phish 3D) and the rising cost of producing these films, where should it stop?

More on the debate over 3D films, including comments from James Cameron and Michael Bay, and also, why we should all be looking forward to the filthy world of Jackass flying at our faces after the jump.

Jamie Foxx Re-Writing TV History with LAVERNE & SHIRLEY Remake – UPDATED

Posted: March 23rd, 2010 at 7:45 pm

slice_jamie_foxx_laverne_shirley_01.jpg

I guess, these days, one bad idea deserves another.  Allow me to provide an example.  The first bad idea came when Garry Marshall announced that he was attempting to bring Laverne & Shirley, his popular Happy Days spin-off from the 1970s, to the big screen.  The second bad idea was revealed to TV Guide earlier this week.  Garry Marshall announced that Jamie Foxx was writing the script, and as we reported last month, his Valentine’s Day co-stars Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel would star the title roles, respectively. Here’s the word from Marshall:

“Jamie and I are trying to do it. He’s writing it. It’s a whole different modern day take on how they came up on the streets during difficult times. Laverne would be this very tough girl with a big ‘L’ tattooed on her arm. Jennifer Garner would play Laverne and Jessica Biel would play Shirley.”

To me, ideas like this one seem to be the formula for a box office bomb.  However, in this situation, I wouldn’t actually mind being proven wrong. Here’s to hoping I am.

[Update: The Wrap got in touch with Foxx's agent who said there's "no truth" to the story.]

The first official image from the upcoming black comedy, Burke & Hare has just been released.

Directed by John Landis, the film stars Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) in the title roles,  and is based on the true story of two 19th century serial murderers and grave robbers who discover the highly profitable business of providing cadavers to a medical school in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The film is currently in production and is slated to be released later this year. Burke & Hare also stars Isla Fisher, Tim Curry, John Cleese, and Tom Wilkinson. Now that’s a comedic movie line-up that we can all look forward to.

Green Day’s Musical, AMERICAN IDIOT, in Talks to Rock on the Big Screen with Tom Hanks Producing

Posted: March 23rd, 2010 at 4:11 am

Tom Hanks and Green Day 21st Century Breakdown.jpg

It appears that the musical rock opera concept album that shot the punk rockers from Green Day into superstardom just cannot be stopped.  After the success of their 2004 album, Green Day transformed American Idiot into a successful, one-act stage musical, which also includes music from their follow up album, 21st Century Breakdown.

Even though the musical has yet to debut on Broadway, Deadline has just reported that talks are underway with Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to turn the musical into a feature film.  For those that are unfamiliar with Playtone, they were responsible for the box office smash, Mamma Mia!, which of course was originally a Broadway musical adapted from the music of Abba.  Apparently, Playtone has a first look deal with Universal, but Hanks and Goetzman are working on actually getting the rights to American Idiot before they bring it to the studio.

Based on the material, it’s clearly obvious that the film will be more Rent than Sweeney Todd, but feel free to judge for yourself. Hit the jump to check out a brief synopsis and the official video for “21 Guns”, featuring the cast of American Idiot.

Rachel McAdams May Take on Horror with THE ORPHANAGE and WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE

Posted: March 22nd, 2010 at 9:27 am

slice_rachel_mcadams_01.jpg

There is a rumor floating around that, if true, will ultimately allow Rachel McAdams to add “scream queen” to her rapidly growing resume.  Although she may have dabbled in the genre with 2005′s Red Eye, McAdams is rumored to be attached to two projects that should allow her to officially cross “horror” off her to do list.

One is a co-starring role alongside Michael Douglas (who is also producing) and possibly, Saoirse Ronan, (The Lovely Bones) in an adaptation of the 1962 Shirley Jackson novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle – the story of two young girls and their ailing uncle forced to live in an isolated estate after the rest of their family is poisoned.

The other is the starring role in the American remake of the Guillermo del Toro produced Spanish-language film, El Orfanato (The Orphanage). Don’t worry, you’re not alone if you shuddered after seeing the word: remake.  You can check out the trailer and the synopsis for the original El Orfanato from 2007 after the jump.  [Pajiba]
