AVATAR Becomes the First Film to Gross More Than $2 Billion Worldwide

After winning its seventh weekend in a row with a $30 million take, the highest grossing seventh weekend ever, Avatar fulfilled its destiny in becoming the first film to ever exceed $2 billion worldwide.  The film has totaled $1.45 billion overseas and $594.5 million stateside, leaving it $6.3 million shy of Titanic‘s domestic record ($600.8 million); that record will be broken in the next couple days as well.  Avatar seems certain to win its next weekend against relatively light competition, and in doing so would become one of only ten films to win the box office crown for eight consecutive weekends:

For those interested, Avatar still trails Titanic in overall ticket sales.  According to my rough estimates, which attempt to account for higher ticket prices due to inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges, Titanic sold about 350-400 million tickets when all was said and done, while Avatar has lured upwards of 200 million moviegoers (and counting) to theaters.

Still, seven-going-on-eight weekends in a row is a tremendous feat in any era, and $2 billion is an astounding number that probably won’t be topped until . . . well, Avatar 2.

Glad a fantasy/sci-fi flick is in the lead. Hopefully it will pave the way for more to come. Avatar was great fun, not the most original story but visually stunning and some great ideas within the film. The planet Pandora was the real star of the show for me though.

The 3D was excellent too, spose it made so much because of the draw to the new 3D experience. I'm so glad i got to see it this way, though, theres still room for improvement here. The glasses darkened things a bit (which actually made the blue naavi look a lil more real IMO) but for other films it may backfire. Also, the glasses are helluva uncomfortable to wear. Some of the fast paced action was very blurry too i found.
But overall, I was more than blown away by the whole experience. Now, if only they can ban noisy fat popcorn munchers from theatres it would be an awesome improvement. Surely the tech to achieve that is a lot easier? Why oh why do they sell the noisiest food in cinemas? That ruined 40 mins of Avatar for me.

Ugh I had the same problem, hard to get immersed with so many people in the theatre with you. Well, that's why I went a second time. :)

Lol, there were more people there the second time I watched Avatar then the first… seriously the word of mouth was insane. I'm waiting for the Blu-Ray release (which sadly wont be anytime soon because of how popular it is).

They need to measure by the number of tickets sold. The cost of the tickets for this movie were higher then usual.
The movie is visually stunning and that is why the viewership is where it at. People are curious but the story is jumbled and lackluster. I hope the movie industry does not jump on the bandwagon just because this one has made money. It would ruin the industry

Sorry dude, but Hollywood has been waiting for years for a 3D movie to really be a hit. I'd say they might have found it with AVATAR. Clash of the Titans and Harry Potter are already going 3D. I think its just the beginning.
Personally, I liked it. But I don't think its worth all this hoopla. I admit that the story isn't the strongest but people seem to love the story as well, not just the visuals.
It is visually amazing but I don't think peopl would go back unless they liked the story too.

It will be interesting to see how well Avatar 2 does. I am highly in doubt that it can top $2 bill made by Avatar 1 but who ever thought the first one would do this well???

    Crazy shit.

key words, “and counting,” this movie could still go on to sell another 200 million tickets for all we could say. I think by the time it exits theaters it will be dangerously close to Titanics ticket sales considering it has sold the same amount of tickets as Titanic in the same amount of time. Who knows though, maybe Avatar won't have the same legs as Titanic… I still think it will come very close to beating Titanics actually ticket sales number.
