20th Century Fox recently put together an “Avatar Media Day” to mark the pending November 16th release of the Extended Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD.  We have a 6:49 behind-the-scenes featurette from the event, and it’s full of interesting little tidbits.  With various crew members speaking to their area of expertise, the clip is divided into sections like “On the Set with James Cameron,” “A Look Through the Lens (3D),” and “The Na’avi World.”

If you’re a fan of Avatar (and probabilistically speaking, you are), check it out after the jump.

Here is a description for the Extended Collector’s Edition:

The three-disc Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and Avatar Collector’s Edition DVD will both feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, and new collector’s extended cut with over 15 more minutes including an exclusive alternate opening earth scene. Viewers will have the ability to journey to the far-reaches of Pandora with “Capturing Avatar“ an in-depth feature length documentary covering the 16-year filmmaker journey that includes all new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau and cast and crew exploring Cameron’s unique vision for the film.

Check out the full specs here, and get pumped for Avatar 2 and 3, which hit theaters back-to-back Decembers in 2014 and 2015.

I can finally buy the Blu-Ray! Damn, that wait seemed like it was forever. Screw that bare-bones release from April – this one is what we’ve been waiting for.

As an audience member I walked out of this film pissing myself laughing… as a film maker I’m sold. I’m now resigned to buying this strictly for the special features.

Avatar sucked. It was Pocahontas painted blue. Everyone who liked this movie has no idea why they liked the movie. I hear responses like, “It was epic,” or “It was groundbreaking,” or “the greatest 3-D movie of all time!” One: it wasn’t epic, it was done primarily on blue screen and the plot has been told literally a countless number of time before. Two: I can’t act like the movie wasn’t visually stunning, and from what I understand about the technology used it was fairly groundbreaking. Despite all that, James Cameron still finds ways to act like he created the universe just because he made the Smurfs version of Pocahontas. Third, the only reason movies come out in 3-D is because of internet pirating. If you literally have to go to the movies to see something in 3-D, that is, you can’t just watch a recorded version from your home and get the full effect, more people are going to go to the movie. Oh, and they get to charge you more now that they have 3-D. It’s a simple equation. James Cameron is a dick. Avatar wasn’t a “great movie.” It was a very well done reboot of Pocahontas, but a reboot nonetheless.

@ chakawakasui……ha….I find it hilarious that you jealous fanboys are still rehashing the same old smurf/blue pocahontas jokes. Your jokes are soooo old and unoriginal, just a reboot of other old lame jokes……please come up with something original, after all, isn’t that what you are accusing james cameron of….you are lame….who’s the real dick?

It’s not intended to be a joke. Additionally, I’m not a fanboy. I’m just someone who likes just about every kind of movie, from horror to Pixar-type animated flicks. But genuinely, do you think the plot was unique in any way, shape or form? It’s not a joke to say something is, in fact, directly like something else. And no joke, who exactly is the fan boy? Is it the guy who jumped to the aid of James Cameron just because someone thought he was not only a dick, but Avatar was a media created hype fest that most people just said was good because someone else thought so? I think any logic would point towards you being a fanboy, and me just having an opinion. But for real, if you can tell me how this plot was unique, I’m all ears, or well, eyes in this situation. Good luck.
