Pandora may be full of unobtainium, but James Cameron’s Avatar is obtaining plenty of cash at the box office.  The film brought in another $19.4 million on Monday, a figure that is even higher than the $16.3 million it made last Monday.  Numbers this high are normally reserved for a Friday or Saturday, but the Na’vi have pulled in $16+ million every day except Thursday when it bottomed at $11.1 million.  It’s domestic total has now reached $232 million, and after only 11 days, it’s grossed $642 million worldwide.  More on Monday after the jump.

According to Variety, total ticket sales were up 43% from the same Monday last year.  In dollar signs, that’s $60.7 million compared to $42 million a year ago.  Marley & Me topped the box office then with $7.5 million, followed by Bedtime Stories with $6.4 million.

It’s interesting to watch Avatar‘s effect on the box office.  Sherlock Holmes, It’s Complicated, and Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 are performing above expectations as well.  Are they rising because of Avatar, working separately, or helping the alien epic?  Perhaps just a good mix of watchable films and different genres is making this the best holiday season for studios.  I am leaning toward Cameron; I think Avatar rocks. Matt is less enthusiastic. What do you think?

I have seen this movie twice … and it is truly awesome. A wonderful plot and the best CGI I have seen in any movie. Weta Digital has done the best creative work that I have seen in CGI … I now have a taste to learn how to do this creative work myself.

That’s just insane I think it will reach 385 million domestically as long no competitive movie comes out and knocks it down. It’s by far going to be highest grossing movie of 2009 that’s for sure and coolest cinematic experience in 3d that was the highlight of the movie for me .

Matt Goldberg has never been able to make sound arguments. I rarely agree with any of his predictions or opinions about current movies. Avatar will definately pass the $1 Billion mark and people should learn their lesson from Titanic. Do not bet against Cameron, especially after creating the bad a$s 3D IMAX experience that is Avatar.

I want to see ‘Sherlock Holmes’ with some pals so I went to see ‘Up in the Air’ today. Every seat for every Avatar showing was selling out. It was on three 3D screens

Exhibitor Relations This is beginning to sound like a broken record: “Avatar” grossed $18.4 million on Wednesday. Domestic total now stands at $268 million with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Could Cameron actually topple his “Titanic” self? Worldwide “Avatar” has now amassed over $750 million.

I think it’s going to bring some where around 50 to 60 million I think this weekend. It has a chance to break Transformers 2 402 million record or beat Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith 380 million. It’s gold at box office for James Cameron and 20 th Century Fox
