We’ve been discussing bits and pieces of what would be included on the Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. 20th Century Fox officially announced the specs of the three-disc set today, which includes forty-five minutes of deleted scenes and an extended cut marked by an alternate opening earth scene. We have a pair of trailers for the new home video option, with a few seconds worth of a glimpse into that Earth-set opening. Hit the jump to check it out.
This one is shorter, with a lot of the same footage. But there is a unique shot of a shaggy Sam Worthington throwing a slow-motion punch, so I thought it was worth posting.
Here’s the UK press release with all the details:
Three-Disc Set of the Worldwide Theatrical And Home Entertainment Phenomenon Contains Even More of the AVATAR Experience with Over Eight Hours of Never-Before-Seen Material and in-depth exploration into the World of Pandora
Director James Cameron is unlocking the secrets of Pandora and taking fans on a guided tour of his vision with the highly anticipated release of AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD on 15th November. With three versions of the film, AVATAR fans will get an all-new extended cut of the film, in addition to hours of never-before-seen material including over 45 minutes of amazing deleted scenes.
“I told our team — let’s do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want. There’s an extended length cut that’s sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set,” said James Cameron.
The three-disc AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and AVATAR Collector’s Edition DVD will both feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, and new collector’s extended cut with over 15 more minutes including an exclusive alternate opening earth scene. Viewers will have the ability to journey to the far-reaches of Pandora with “Capturing Avatar“ an in-depth feature length documentary covering the 16-year filmmaker journey that includes all new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau and cast and crew exploring Cameron’s unique vision for the film now seen by more than 310 million people worldwide. The Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. For the ultimate fan, the UK is also releasing a limited run of an Exclusive Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Boxset with only 1000 copies available.
The AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray will contain even more bonus material and will provide a compelling interactive viewing experience. Leveraging the unparalleled interactive technology of Blu-ray, fans can dive further into the world of the Na’vi and experience the international sensation from behind-the-scenes with a “master class” on the production of the film. Viewers can experience the full film in three stages of production: ‘Performance Capture’, ‘Template’ and ‘Final’ as well as a composite of all stages in “Pandora’s Box”. This mode is complemented by interviews with James Cameron and the crew and ultimately serves as a complete and enlightening tutorial on the making of AVATAR.

Cool
Thanks Brendan for posting it up .The Earth-set opening looks good I am definitely buy this
dvd for it’s extra features and making of the movie.
Wow, a bit different being in a community that likes this movie. I hope the bluray isn’t too expensive.
coolness
I’m in. Only saw it twice in the theaters in the initial run and it has been long enough that another viewing will be fresh… albeit 2D and on a much, much smaller screen. lol.
Honestly, I look most forward to the behind the scenes extras. This is groundbreaking tech and I know Cameron won’t disappoint on the technical aspects, like he did to some degree on the story and characters — doesn’t seem like the extra scenes will help with the story/characters, does it?
Anyway, should be fun and fascinating!
The first viewing of this movie is much better than the second, so added footage should be a real joy. At least for one viewing. Definitely not the kind of movie I revisit a few times a year like I do with Trainspotting.
Groundbreaking tech? Anyone else notice that we’ve had 3D since the 60′s? Everybody nowadays is all OOO and AHH over it like we just discovered a door into narnia. and if you’re going on about CGI. Come on man. Most of the scenes with dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993) were made with CGI. Hell, video games for decades now (starting with final fantasy 7 i believe) have had that. So they added it to movies big whoop. Story/characters? He took pocahontes and threw in aliens as the indians.
Yes, groundbreaking technology. And no, I don’t mean 3D, and no I don’t mean CGI in general. It’s okay if you don’t care about the technical aspects of filmmaking enough to educate yourself about them, but maybe you shouldn’t mock those who do.Here is the second of many links from a google search on “new technology in Avatar”. It’s a nice short summary of some groundbreaking work on the movie:http://www.scienceprog.com/technologies-used-in-avatar-movie/

Actually, I believe a majority of the dino scenes in JP were animatronics. People assume it’s mostly CGI, but they don’t realize a LOT of it was mechanical.
If this is more than $40, they can count me out.
Amazon says $23 for DVD $36 for blu-ray.
