Leave behind the hype about “revolutionizing cinema”. Ignore the half-billion dollar price tag. Forget the numerous years James Cameron waited to make sure technology could match his imagination. To include these external factors in an evaluation of Avatar would make the film a colossal disappointment. However, judged solely on its own merits, Avatar is a fine film but one that can feel limited at times. Hampered by the disregard for advancements in computer animation, a lack of understanding the freedom digital 3D filmmaking provides, and a story both outdated and demeaning, Avatar still manages to come out ahead with strong performances (especially from Stephen Lang), excellent pacing, and Cameron’s unrivaled ability to capture action on a grand scale.
In the year 2154, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a marine paralyzed from the waist down, awakens from cryo-sleep to learn that his science-genius twin brother is dead and that RDA, the company he worked for, wants to hire Jake to continue his brother’s research as a member of the avatar program. Avatars are ridiculously expensive, 100% biological replications of the indigenous Na’vi population who are agile, blue, ten-foot-tall humanoids who can breathe the air which is toxic to humans. Avatars are controlled via neural link, so the fact that Jake is a soldier and not a scientist isn’t a problem because avatars are wired to match an individual’s genetic make-up. The whole point of the program is to have humans communicate with the Na’vi, learn their culture first-hand, and then ask them very nicely if they would please get the hell off their land so RDA can mine the valuable mineral “Unobtanium.” Jake’s military background and his desire to walk again using expensive, future-y spinal cord surgery makes him the perfect candidate to repurpose the avatar program from diplomacy to espionage.
You see, diplomacy doesn’t really appeal to Col. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) who’s the company’s chief of security and is positively horny to use every piece of heavy artillery on the base to wipe out the Na’vi. With Jake’s arrival and introduction to the avatar program, Quaritch offers him a deal: be a mole and learn what makes the Na’vi tick, and in exchange Quaritch will make sure the company pays for Jake’s spinal surgery. Unfortunately, once in his Avatar body (which lets him walk again anyway) and among the Na’vi, Jake becomes enraptured with their culture and the dangerous beauty of Pandora. He also falls in love with Neytiri, a great warrior and the princess of her tribe. Unfortunately, RDA is slightly indifferent towards Jake’s personal happiness and so he must “choose” between the evil, soulless corporation who wants to destroy the proud and peaceful natives or fighting with the Na’vi against his former employer in order to save his newly adopted people. And no, I don’t have that backwards: the Na’vi don’t adopt Jake; he adopts them by becoming their new de facto leader.
Avatar is a noble savage story. For those unaware of what that means, the “noble savage” concept came about in the 18th century and says that a civilization untouched by modernization is the most pure. Man’s ambition is the undoing of his natural good, and in order to reclaim that good the modern man must leave behind the corruption of the modern world and go live with the noble savages. But that’s just the dumb part of the concept. The offensive part, although not inherent but often present, is that the modern man is white and he not only regains his humanity by living with the “savages” but turns out to be nobler than all of them and their true savior. The comparison of Avatar to Dances with Wolves is unfair because in Dances with Wolves, Kevin Costner’s character is ultimately saved by the Sioux rather than inciting them to rise up and fight the U.S. government. It also features a warring Native American tribe who are a bunch of assholes so the noble savage concept doesn’t apply since they’re both “untouched” by modernity.
The simplicity of the story isn’t Avatar‘s flaw but rather its unwillingness to tweak the details to create something fresh. Why can Cameron re-imagine horses with six legs and rhinoceroses with hammerheads but making his protagonist a non-white male seems to escape him? The film isn’t overtly racist nor is the noble savage story enough to derail the proceedings but it is disappointing and perhaps the biggest sign that the story was an afterthought.
I wish Cameron had put half as much effort into the plot as he did into designing Pandora. The attention to the plant life is particularly impressive as Cameron has imagined botany and forestry in a way we’ve never seen before. Unfortunately, his imagination is far more limited when it comes to the animals. All the creatures we see on Pandora are not only based on a recognizable animal, but the changes only feel cosmetic rather than serving some evolutionary purpose. To those who may argue that all creatures have some basis in our world, I would say to look at the designs of Guillermo Del Toro, an artist who understands what “otherworldly” means. Sure, the “Pale Man” from Pan’s Labyrinth, is a man but could you have ever imagined someone who shoves eyeballs in their palms in order to see? But in Avatar you take a horse, tie-dye it, add some limbs, make it bioluminescent and now you have what my official Avatar “Activist Survival Guide” calls a “Direhorse.” Players of the video game Spore will probably look at the creatures in the film and wonder what all the fuss is about.
Additionally, you will find no creatures with fur on Pandora because fur is difficult to animate. I know this because on the special features disc for Monsters, Inc., they detailed the process of getting Sulley’s fur to look and act real. You’ll also notice that in Avatar, all the hair of the Na’vi is either braided or pulled back into a pony-tail. All the Na’vi’s have this long hair-braid because it allows them to create a physical link to the animals of Pandora and to their Na’vi ancestors through the Tree of Souls. Thematically, this natural connection is meant to mirror the artificial one humans are attempting through the avatars. But on a technical level, the braid exists because hair is also difficult to animate. I know this because the DVD special features for The Incredibles, they go into the challenges of animating Violet’s hair. Monsters, Inc. came out in 2001 and The Incredibles came out in 2004 and seeing the absence of these innovations make Avatar feel limited despite the terrific animation of the Na’vi and the overall scope of Pandora.
But the scope doesn’t rely on 3D nor does it require 3D to be appreciated. Cameron’s ecstasy over the 3D in Avatar can’t help but feel slightly comical and deflating when you see that he doesn’t appreciate the true value of what 3D offers. Despite having his own problems with the technology, Robert Zemeckis has discovered that two of the major benefits of digital 3D are you have infinite depth of field (meaning images will always be in focus no matter how far in the foreground or background they may be) and you can soar on long, unbroken shots. Cameron shoots Avatar as if it were any of his other movies. The 3D provides some nice clarity but I think anyone who sees it digitally projected in 2D won’t miss much.
Thankfully, Cameron doesn’t get distracted by his new toolkit and forget to make a film that’s exciting and expertly paced. Clocking in at 160 minutes, Avatar never feels long and the experience flies by, which is an impressive feat since most “epic” films make you feel the runtime. As for the set pieces, Cameron has never had a problem shooting action and in Avatar, especially the grand finale, he challenges himself by taking to the sky and swinging through the jungle. The marines and the greedy corporation may be very Aliens, but the action in Avatar is like nothing you’ve ever seen from Cameron before.
The film also has a terrific cast with everyone turning in terrific performances. Sigourney Weaver looks like she’s having loads of fun; Michelle Rodriguez doesn’t wear a perpetual sneer; and Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, even though their performances are motion-captured, show that they’re going to be among the next wave of Hollywood A-listers. But the standout and perhaps the best reason to see Avatar is Stephen Lang. Making his screen-acting debut in the 1981 Made-for-TV Movie We’re Fighting Back, Lang has had an incredible 2009 with Public Enemies, The Men Who Stare at Goats, and now Avatar. Quaritch is one of the most fun and memorable villains in blockbuster history. He’s the bad guy you love to root for because he’s so cavalier and arrogant without any hint of insecurity. He wants to unleash hell on the Na’vi, not out of any personal vendetta or deep-seated trauma, but simply because he can. It’s not a deep character but Lang makes him as exciting and delightful to watch as any of the big-budget special effects.
The most surprising thing about Avatar is its limitations. Limited by its narrative, special effects, and understanding of 3D, Cameron never fails in these areas but he never excels in them either. What saves Avatar aren’t the supposed innovations but strong performances, skilled editing, and Cameron’s ability to direct action so amazing that it demands you see it in a movie theater.

You HAVE to see Stephen Lang in Gettysburg and Gods & Generals. The latter sucks, but his performance is superb. Although knowing how good an actor he is spoiled some ridiculous little movie he was in like 5 or 6 years ago. David James Elliott of JAG played a Fed coming back from I think Australia after they thought they’d caught his elusive serial killer. On the plane ride back there is this nice flight attendant played by Lang who befriends JAG man’s son. I turned to my father and we both said ‘Stephen Lang does not play a nice flight attendant. He’s the killer’.

hahahha I see the internet movie boggers and sites like these are doing everything they can do bring this down. Why? because it is cool to say crap about it.
No one from the movie said it has revolutionary story. They said it has revolutionary cgi and 3D, which is 100% right.
Such movies are not suppose to have complicated story.
Oh and top critics have given it 90′s on rottentomatoes, which means they know what a bad movie is or isn’t.
But you know maybe you shouldn’t have caught onto the hype. It is you guys who came up with terms like game changer, FuCk my eyeballs, etc. You are the bloggers who hyped it so much before comic con. Guess what? You are dissapointed.
Learn a lesson. It isn’t late. Stop hyping movies too much. Hell even movies you guys have liked or supported have sucked. Iron man, tdk, transformers etc. all of them suck.
I thought this would suck too. But i enjoyed this way more than all those flicks combined. Don’t know why.
A solid 8/10 movie for me.

Have you not been paying attention this last year? The man didn’t disregard advancements, he made advancements. He is pushing CGI to beyond it’s limits. If that’s a disregard for advancing computer animation, then I guess we’re fucked.

Wow, a little harsh on the movie but I can’t disagree with your comments on the story.
I watched Avatar last night, in 3D, and I have to admit I was a little disappointed too. But I blame it on the script, 2-dimensional characters and the “preachy” feel. Technically, the movie was a 10/10. Because of the story etc I had to drop my score a bit but can’t feel good about giving it anything less than an 8/10 simply because it is the most amazing LOOKING movie I have seen in years!

Just saw the film and thought it was amazing. Yes the story has been done before, but I felt like a kid again, being wisked away to Pandora and enjoying the ride. CGI and 3D were terriffic. Reviewer clearly not paying attention. There were scenes where the Na’vi had their hair down and unbraided. But who care! I hate a bad film and this one is great. Can’t wait to see it again and everyone in the theater seemed to feel the same way.

Get your facts straight. The Pale Man is based on a mythology creature.
Check the trailer of Clash of the Titans and you see the same creatures with eye balls in their hands.

This a bad review. The author writes like he’s a superior authority on 3D and sfx than Jim Cameron, yet admits in the text that his efx knowledge comes from DVD extras – it’s beyond absurd. Also, it seem wholly credible to me that the Na’vi would have braided hair, as well as being an elegant solution to knocking six months off post production and millions of dollars off the budget. Only in his dramatic appraisal does Goldberg come close to making valid points. A well written review which is at the same time, incredibly dumb.

Yeah, this review is terrible and inconsistent with what was on the screen. Yes, the story was predictable and sub-par but the special effects and 3-D were breathtaking, and clearly this film is a game changer. This review cites animated movies as reasons why these special effects are limited but I hate to break it to this guy, this isn’t an animated film in the true sense of the term. This is a film where real world actors and a computer generated world are seamless integrated into a world that looks and feels like it does in fact exist. This has never been done before and it should be commended and celebrated. Its funny that this movie does have flaws but this review focuses on areas where it truly shines.

Matt,
I think you let your inherently contrarian nature and pessimistic worldview get in the way of your critical objectivity. Yes, the film adapts the history of Colonial Imperialism and Manifest Destiny into a futuristic context, but every great film ever made has borrowed in some way from history or mythology. Read Joseph Campbell’s “The Power Of Myth” and “The Hero’s Journey” and you’ll learn that there really are no 100% original stories.
While you accurately note that a white man becomes the saviour of the Na’Vi, what you ignore is the immense soul-changing impact the character’s experience among the Na’Vi has on him as a human being. People write what they know, and James Cameron is as white as they come. For him to have written the story from a Na’vi (a.k.a. Native American) perspective would not only be presumptuous and disingenuous, I think it would’ve missed the point entirely, which is that a lot of whites are suddenly coming to the realization that our forefathers might have fucked things up royally, not only in terms of our relationships with minorities and native cultures but in terms of our relationship with the freaking PLANET.
You’re a good writer and I think you make some good points, but I think you TOTALLY missed the gist of what this movie is about. Preachy? Maybe. But still a VERY solid film that I believe will stand the test of time. A lot of critics hated Star Wars when it came out, too…
Um, there is no thing as critical objectivity. To be objective is to be uncritical. You can’t criticize an apple for being an apple. It’s objectively an apple. All criticism is subjective. You back it up with facts, which are always objective, but you put these facts into an arguement which is then subjective. You can argue whether or not I made my case, but you’re not even arguing against that. You’re A) lobbing ad hominem attacks followed by B) accusing me of making a criticism I never made because nowhere in my review did I say AVATAR was bad because it wasn’t 100% original.
This turns into a cop-out because it assumes Cameron couldn’t tweak any of the story elements into something new. The Na’vi have a soul-changing effect on Jake because they’re the noblest savages and they never do anything wrong or objectionable. They’re also helpless without his guidance and leadership. Also, if Jake had been like Quaritch, it would be a soul-changing experience. It’s more indifference to acceptance. They fill a hole in his life, they don’t change it. And yes, it’s so timely that white men have fucked up relationships with minorities, native cultures, and the planet. It’s almost as groundbreaking as that decades-old commercial where those kids throw trash out the window and the Indian cries a single tear.
Thankfully, it’s all good. As long as the white man is contrite, he can steer the fate of everyone else back on track. Too dangerous to let the natives handle it on their own.
Oh, and AVATAR has an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes right now so clearly the critical community doesn’t know what they’re thinking. Why not just apply that argument to every film that critics don’t like?
See, what you’re calling “contrarian” and “pessimistic” is just me calling you out on your bullshit. You want to talk about the film, that’s great. I’d love to. But don’t shut it down before you even begin with ad-hominem attacks.
Wouldn’t filling a hole in your life by it’s very definition change it?

Sorry. A blabber mouth review. There was no disclaimer and I had to stop reading at the beginning of the 2nd paragraph when you started spoiling the movie for me by giving away details. Some of us haven’t seen it yet.

Interesting review, although I would probably give it an A-. It was most certainly hampered by a simplistic plot. Not to mention, unobtainium…really? But what was good about it was really really good. True, some of the 3D could’ve been better used. I think my favourite 3D scene was at the beginning when he’s waking up from hyperspace, and they’re floating around. That looked amazing. And Michelle Rodriguez without a sneer, how ‘about that! I actually liked her in something. When I heard she was gonna be in it, i thought they were gonna do a Vasquez, but worse… but no, Cameron wisely kept her performance to a minimum. He also kept the action to a minimum which I also appreciated given todays directors penchant for endless explosion and neverending car chases.

Unobtanium is a real scientific term, actually, for any extremely rare, costly, or physically impossible material needed to fulfill a given design for a given application. You can read more about it here:

This movie for me was a really enjoyable visual spectacle. I think your review was a bit harsh on the producer. I think the “whiteness” of the protagonist is not an issue. A good Good versus Evil movie transcends that. Using the “White” protagonist issue, will make Lord of the Rings the most racist movie ever made (which I believe it was BTW), and I hope your criticism reflected that back then.
It don’t apply it to LOTR because there can’t be a white-black dominance when there aren’t any black people. You can say that those are the orcs but I’ve never been swayed by that argument. AVATAR takes place in a multiethnic environment in the future where the Na’vi are a clearly Native American culture. There are no black characters in LOTR because it clearly never crossed Tolkien’s mind. However, the idea of overcoming racial enemity is still present in the novel as seen from the bonding between Gimli and Legolas.
I also have no problem with a good vs. evil story. I have a problem with the white person being better at a culture than those actually raised in it. When he tames the the Leonopteryx, it’s basically saying, “Let me show you how it’s done.” The fact that he’s contrite about his earlier actions doesn’t change the fact that he now thinks he’s their leader (Tsu’tey is the leader in name-only).

The movie I saw last night was not the movie described in this review, I’m sorry. Mr. Goldberg might watch movies for a living but I watch the for entertainment, and by those standers alone, this movie is an unequivocal success. I have NEVER seen anything like Avatar in my 32 years of life and I am highly critical to anyone who thinks otherwise.

Give it a year, Matt. You will (and should) look at this review and feel deeply embarrassed. The points about avoiding hair (seriously?) and not using 3D to its potential (because it doesn’t use one particular somewhat tired technique I guess you like?) are irresponsible from someone who has been watching film and trying to convey information about it to others.
If you can’t see that this is a leap in technology and not just a small evolution, you are blinded by something in yourself. I don’t know or care what that is, but it makes this review at best useless and at worst insulting to your audience.
There are other flaws that will ruin it for some (and I’d wager it’s going to be a small vocal minority) but these points you brought up are — I’m done wasting energy here.
Yes, this must have been exhausting for you.
Cameron created an entire planet, down to the very last leaf. You think he was sitting there going “Fuck this hair shit. IT’S TOO HARD!” I guarantee you there is a reason they don’t have fur.
Also, your point about the evolution of CGI hair is dead with two words: KING KONG.

And that reason is…? If there is a reason, it’s a poor one because it makes the world look limited.
Also King Kong isn’t hair, it’s fur, which was solved in 2001 and Kong came out in 2005.

There were other things to do, and I see it _was_ wasted on you. Hopefully, someone else will find it useful. I see why you are attempting to defend yourself now with that event that acknowledged you as actually being a critic. Congratulations.
this reviewer has completely failed to notice the strong environmental theme and message of the movie – the theme of the movie was brilliant because it reflects what is happening here on earth – we are destroying the natural world that our species relies on and we need to change our ways and live in harmony with the earth or the human race will suffer due to lack of resources and lack of healthy ecosystems to keep the planet healthy for human life. very strong environmental theme The cgi effects in 3d are also fantastic!
I noticed it. It’s a mundane point. We all know the problems facing our environment. By your metric, The Day After Tomorrow and the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still are brilliant because they’re about protecting the environment.
Have you seen that commercial where the Indian is walking along the highway and some rowdy kids throw trash on the road as they speed by and the Indian cries a single tear? That commercial came out in 1971. Same message.

matt goldberg calls the aliens savages – yet they live in harmony with the planet, with nature and with animals – they respect the planet upon which they rely and have a spiritual connection with all things in their world – they are not fighting wars with each other – these are all attributes that many humans do not yet have – the aliens have evolved a spiritual awareness of the interconnectedness of all things – you are the poor underdeveloped savage matt goldberg – such irony
Sigh. Here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noble_savage
The aliens may have an evolved spiritual connectedness but they’re helpless without the white guy to lead them. Also, “savage” doesn’t necessarily mean barbaric. It means uncivilized. The presumption is that man in his natural state, untouched by civilization, is the most pure. That’s fucking ridiculous.

with respect (and I know u are more than a savage I was pulling your leg) you seem to presume that current human ‘civilisation’ is superior to the natural civilisation that has evolved on the alien planet – you fail to see the whole point of the movie -what you call civilisation is polluting the seas, polluting the air, causes global warming, causes massive inequality between people, commits genocide of humans, destroys the forests which produce oxygen for us and regulates the climate, destroys animals that have emotions, pollutes the environment with toxic chemicals – what is civilised about that ? human civilisation relies on and cannot exist without the natural world that we are destroying – human civilisation needs to evolve to co-exist in symbiosis with nature – you can watch this movie and learn.
humanity is merely a part of an intricate web of life on earth and unless we ‘learn’ to live in harmony with the earth our species is likely to become extinct – the main character didnt join another ethnic group he joined a species that were ecologically aware and living in harmony with their environment – no race on earth can lay claim to doing this very well although some indigenous cultures like the Indians were more environmentally aware – the original indigeneous people of the Americas caused the extinctions of thousand of species as they spread from alaska to tierra del fiego although some indigeneous peoples like the Laika became environmentally and spiritually aware.
the fact that the main character is white is apt because its a metaphor for white man that has realised the wrongness of his ways – the fact that he can fly the alien creature shows humans are capable of great things – the movie clearly states that there were 5 great navi leaders that flew the great creature also so your argument is redundant imo – the human character (or human spirit) just happens to be the leader this time (after all it is a human audience!)- it is his good heart and good spirit that matters – the main character does help the navi – but it is the spirit of the planet that defeats the evil armies – the human character evolves to become part of the navi – he has moved to a higher level of awareness – the navi taught him not the other way around (remember she called him a moron) – the environmental theme is very strong in this movie.

I’ll be perfectly honest. This movie was an astonishing dissapointment. First off, who the FUCK gives a rats ass about the CGI… it will ALWAYS get better… so much so, that it seems morons of this day and age believe a good movie is based on graphics. NO< it is NOT something new and unique, as the storyline is a rehash of every simpleton plot out there for the last 100 years. Lets get to the heart of the issues, the inconsistencies. Shall I list them…
1. Horrible MAIN character – Played out Marine character, with no background other than ‘ he wouldn’t quit ‘, but yet not revealing anything about how in the hell a parapeligic could get recruited as a MARINE???
2. The Economy??? – In nearly every reference to earth, they said, we killed our mother and now it seems we are raping another planet just the same. If the resources of earth are literally so dwindling, how in the hell then are we still money based in our society. Money is printed by the world banks to increase or decrease the value of it worldwide… how bad is it then that earth is a husk of a world, with everyone desperate to leave, YET, they have what seems trillions & trillions to spare for weapons, private contracted military (Who seem to work directly for the corporations), tons and mega-tons of construction equipment, and so much more… yet all I hear is about how the economy is crumbling and the main dude can’t even afford basic spinal surgery. C’mon guys…
3. CGI the Best? – Seriously, the CGI is outstanding, but it does not make a movie that much better, if those very same characters are doing and saying shit I have heard from disney films and the like. If the CGI makes a movie, then it must mean that every new movie that comes out with graphics equal to 2012 or Avatar are by DEFINITION, excellent movies…. give me a break. Its an animators future portfolio… thats all. I mean, SVA students in NYC can create this shit for college projects! lol
4. The Villain! – Sadly, many movies are taking the leap of faith and grasping for political venues to move their concepts forward. This is no different, with a seriously Ferned Gully approach to realizing that life is all connected. So without further a due, we present the anglo-saxon aggresive… the texas ranger without a care in the world other than shooting blue coons… as the movie seems to imply multiple times in dialogue as well as appearance. He talks worse than a cartoon or video game dialogue character, h for some reason or another has no mention of earth,or why he so adamant to defend it, and never does he actually say anything other than shit to start the war… very boring.
5. Technicalities Galore!!!! – If the atmosphere is toxic enough to cause death in 4 minutes due to lung exposure, why then are their skins exposed during the entire movie. If they lack economy to maintain the planet earth, why then do we have private companies with vast resources mining rocks across the galaxy? If they are all connected thru a network of energy and wisdom and voices, why then did they have to fly around to communicate with the other clans.. and for that reason, why have clans anyway? If they are all woven into the cycle of life on Pandora, why then are so many left standing without a clue until big blue marine rides in on his ultra-colored dragon butterfly (Thats exactly what they look like!) If most of the species on Pandora breathe through gills on their chests, why then can they propel massive grunts and yowls… where is the logic of that? Why did they not reveal the nature of the ribs and massive structures surrounding the ‘tree of life’, a common theme in many, many medieval and fantasy movies and anime. Why is every species bigger than a rabbit on Pandora equipped with fiber-optic cabling in their horns or hair? Do the Na’Vi all have a tentacle growing out the back of their heads, and if so, why does it have hair braided around it in a seemingly perfect fashion when Sully’s Avatar is being grown in the tank on base. If the tribes of the Na’Vi are all linked thru a network of energy across the planet, and all tribes listen and follow the words of their spirit guide who interprets the ‘well of energy’, why did the ancient bitch have to ask so many questions and why were not the other clans aware of the dangers presented by the humans. Why weren’t the plants glowing until she turned off the torch… wasnt it nighttime already? Why would humans, who are ludicrously worried about money and efficiency, spend trillions upon trillions to exploit resources sitting UNDER a native village, when it seemed that an ENTIRE PLANET was available to cultivation. They were so cheesy with the plot, they explained it was the richest source of materials within 200 clicks… meaning 2000 kilometers. Seriously, if you travelled millions of miles in space to reach a planet to collect resources, would’nt you scan the whole planet for better spots than one sitting under a whole civilization who just might cost more to your company than just time or money… maybe lives? Why, if the magnetic & energy properties of the valley of the tree of life was so distorted that instruments and lock-on wasn’t available… why then could he fight within the field without having his AVATAR transmission signal interupted by the distortion ‘flux’. Do the Na’Vi have mating organs, or it their main reproductive organ their fiber-optic connection? Because if so, it would mean that every species can inter-procreate, since they ALL seem to share the neuro-interface in their horns. If the planet has more connected synapse branches than a human brain, then why did the planet not think to defend itself with its indiginous animal population sooner than when the marine called upon its help. Why was every single creature of decent size loaded with 4 arms and 2 legs, yet the Na’Vi are humanoid to the core, even lacking feral claws or toe nails… which made absolutely no sense! If they are of nature, they would have such attributes… even natives of earth who dwell in the forests and jungles, have stronger teeth, nails and toe nails that protrude slightly out and are incredibly resistant to breaking. If the Na’Vi are so loving of life, why do they hunt and not live off of the natural plant life??? Even fucking human vegans would have a problem with this ‘ eco-friendly- way of living. Why are they flying around on x-wing styles raptor butterflies…. for what reason? They have no enemies to defend against other than humans, as it seems the tribes of the Na’Vi are all peaceful to each other????? If there are entire mountains floating around, powered by the electrical current of the vines connected to them, why then did they not simply cut the vines to one of the massive floating rocks and let it simply fall to mine it??? Why are there not insects of any kind in this movie?…. a human outpost with everyone skin’s exposed, yet they are not worried about bacteria, atmosphere exposure nor local insects????
And thats the SHORT list of errors!
This movie was a travesty of time, money and waste of time. The budget spent on this crap could have created schools, helped the starving or even been put to the development of technologies to help people. Instead, it was used as a means to lock people into the false idea of ‘save the planet from humans’ who on this planet are not to blame for the corporate structure surrounding them and destroying their ‘ mother’. I know many of you love saying this movie is unique, outstanding and the best there is…. but if that were true, why would they have to spend so much time, effort and money in trying to convince you its the closest thing to meeting jesus christ??? Bottom line, it was a college project gone CGI. If anyone has an answer for the questions I put out there, other than ones defending the mainstream nonsense of the herd… I’d love to hear them!

Ok Matt your lack of understand of CGI is annoying. No hair because hair is hard to animate. And a tree with 500,000 leaves isnt. Braided hair so its eaier to animate. Your a moron. Hair is simulated meaning computer power not hard thinking power. If they wanted hair on the animals, how the fuck can you even come up with the idea of it being to hard for the most epic cgi movie? This is coming from someone who has been in the industie for a few years and is currently a lighting TD for Double Negitve. The CGI is amazing, you really have NO idea how much effort went into that.
Also, to all you idiots picking holes in small things, “air kills you in 1 min but there skill in exposed?” Shup up, its a movie. Do you think 99% of that movie is real? No, they are the facts that are presented to us, that is how the movie functions, just enjoy it. Or are you one of those people that count the number of bullets a gun fires and matches it to its model and then complains when it shot 12 but in real life it shoots 10.
@powerdude.
The money for this could have been use to create schools. HAHA. yeah and so could your paycheck but do you? Private comany. They earn’t money so they can spend it how they like. Your an idiot. Collage project gone wrong? If ANY animation school could churn out just 1 of those shots, they would be ledgedary and every one would go there.
And not seening it in 3d kind of defeats the reason for it being shot in 3d. You will miss much, IE perspective. Your reviewers are hopeless. Knock the story, sure, but technically, you cant say SHIT.

@powerdude.
Ok Matt your lack of understand of CGI is annoying. No hair because hair is hard to animate. And a tree with 500,000 leaves isnt. Braided hair so its eaier to animate. Your a moron. I have no idea who the people were who funded this movie, all the way through the story and acting they frothed and mockingly pushed their totally pathetic elitist hypocritical pacifist/new age/earth worship cliches. Then add to that this whole “all American Military and mankind in general are all demented murders who need to learn from hypocritical new age aliens”. The story line and cliches were such pathetic hypocritical propaganda it was unreal.
Don’t go to pay to see this movie unless you enjoy funding hypocritical new age globalist earth worship propaganda indoctrination, and story lines which shamelessly mock everything good and honorable about military men and women who give their lives every day for honorable causes.

’1. Horrible MAIN character – Played out Marine character, with no background other than ‘ he wouldn’t quit ‘, but yet not revealing anything about how in the hell a parapeligic could get recruited as a MARINE???’
-well, first of all, he was an ex-marine, which I would use my imagination to guess that he’d been relivied of duty due to becoming a parapeligic. the only reason he was hired onto the team was to take the place of his brother. I don’t think he should have been referred to as a marine though.
’2. The Economy??? – In nearly every reference to earth, they said, we killed our mother and now it seems we are raping another planet just the same. If the resources of earth are literally so dwindling, how in the hell then are we still money based in our society. they have what seems trillions & trillions to spare for weapons, private contracted military, tons of construction equipment, and so much more… yet all I hear is about how the economy is crumbling and the main dude can’t even afford basic spinal surgery.’
-gov. always seems to go over the budget, whatever the ‘budget’ is. and yet there is still money for overseas wars, funds for space travel/exploration, etc. I think the idea of money is a farce that doesn’t add up. There can’t possibly be enough money to justify overspending, either in this world of 2009-2010 or the world of Avatar. So I agree with you on that.
’3. CGI the Best? – Seriously, the CGI is outstanding, but it does not make a movie that much better, if those very same characters are doing and saying shit I have heard from disney films and the like.’
-Yes, calling a movie better because it’s CGI surpasses it’s storyline is not true- it’s more of a facade than anything else. But this movie’s CGI is the best of anything made thus far.
‘ 4. The Villain! – we present the anglo-saxon aggresive… the texas ranger without a care in the world other than shooting blue coons. He talks worse than a cartoon or video game dialogue character, he for some reason or another has no mention of earth,or why he so adamant to defend it, and never does he actually say anything other than shit to start the war… very boring.’
-fully agree with you on this one. I found the cardboard cutout to be irrating and distracting.
’5. Technicalities Galore!!!!’
-now, you’re right about some of this, but let’s take a closer look (it may be a lack of imagination on your part to fill in the blanks):
‘If they are all connected thru a network of energy and wisdom and voices, why then did they have to fly around to communicate with the other clans.. and for that reason, why have clans anyway? If they are all woven into the cycle of life on Pandora, why then are so many left standing without a clue until big blue marine rides in on his ultra-colored dragon butterfly’
-if you watched it, maybe you saw that the network of energy/wisdom/voices was a storage place, where you won’t necessarily get a single voice. It’s not a telephone. Also, why have clans? They have probably figured out that it’s not a good idea to group large amounts of people into ‘cities’ that have no positive effects on the environment. Hello, this is an ENVIRONMENTAL concisous group of people. And getting back to the telephone, that’s why not everyone has a clue. Though I would imagine that each spiritual leader of each clan would notice something not right somewhere on the planet. They may not act on that right away; one reason being they aren’t united as a people, which would be something the ‘ultra-colored dragon butterfly’ is used for.
‘Why is every species bigger than a rabbit on Pandora equipped with fiber-optic cabling in their horns or hair? ‘
-maybe the answer is: that’s just the way it is.
‘Do the Na’Vi all have a tentacle growing out the back of their heads, and if so, why does it have hair braided around it in a seemingly perfect fashion when Sully’s Avatar is being grown in the tank on base.’
-maybe it looks like hair to human eyes, but actually grows around the tentacle as a protective surface?
‘Why weren’t the plants glowing until she turned off the torch… wasnt it nighttime already?’
-really. the plants don’t grow in the light of day, so why would they glow in the light of a torch?
‘if you travelled millions of miles in space to reach a planet to collect resources, would’nt you scan the whole planet for better spots than one sitting under a whole civilization who just might cost more to your company than just time or money… maybe lives?’
-perhaps the resource is a resource of energy to the tree they hold in such high regard. And what if such a resource of energy is needed to provide for such a tree in the first place? Would there be an area like that for every clan? So would there then be many areas of suitable resources around the planet? I think so, but that would make the argument make more sense- it’s the closest one, why not go for it?
‘Do the Na’Vi have mating organs, or it their main reproductive organ their fiber-optic connection? Because if so, it would mean that every species can inter-procreate, since they ALL seem to share the neuro-interface in their horns.’
-Perhaps a maybe every species can inter-procreate, but then it’s just one possibility. And why would that matter if they did? Oh, wait, you thought that they wouldn’t be able to tell their species from another species. That makes no sense at all.
‘If the planet has more connected synapse branches than a human brain, then why did the planet not think to defend itself with its indiginous animal population sooner than when the marine called upon its help.’
-did the marine deserve the planet’s help (or more correctly, the deities help) before that moment? I don’t think so.
‘Why was every single creature of decent size loaded with 4 arms and 2 legs, yet the Na’Vi are humanoid to the core, even lacking feral claws or toe nails… which made absolutely no sense! If they are of nature, they would have such attributes… even natives of earth who dwell in the forests and jungles, have stronger teeth, nails and toe nails that protrude slightly out and are incredibly resistant to breaking.’
-A good point- I would have liked to see more non-human characteristics.
‘If the Na’Vi are so loving of life, why do they hunt and not live off of the natural plant life??? Even fucking human vegans would have a problem with this ‘ eco-friendly- way of living.’
-did you miss the ceremonial prayer that occurs when a kill is made?
