This weekend was devoted not only to the spending power of women and their hearts/libidos, but to continuing the dominance of Avatar and its attempt to saturate the populace in coverage and marketing so thick that it could suffocate a child or pet. Over the past several days, we've learned the film's official runtime, more about the film's antagonist Colonel Quaritch (played by Stephen Lang), and seen some new international posters. Tonight, 60 Minutes devoted an entire segment to covering the film. You can see all of it after the jump, and without my editorializing because I seem to catch flack from Avatar fans no matter how much I try to convey that I'm looking forward to the film.
Avatar hits theaters on December 18th.
60 Minutes devoted a segment to covering James Cameron's 3D opus Avatar with Morley Schaeffer, a man so old he was around before 2D, reporting on the film. The piece is partially about Avatar and partially a retrospective of Cameron's career. You'll see a little new footage from Avatar along with a lot of new footage from behind-the-scenes.
A new featurette has also come online which focuses on Stephen Lang's character, Colonel Quaritch. As the featurette explains, Quaritch is the Chief of Security on Pandora and his mission is to use Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as a mole to gain the trust of the indigenous people and then betray them in order to mine a highly valuable ore beneath the planet's surface.
However, Avatar is still in the final stages of post-production even though it opens in less than a month. The Wall Street Journal reports that there are 30 minutes left to be completed with crews working around the clock to complete aspects such as sound mixing and the visual effects. These 30 minutes are part of a 150 minutes runtime, or 156 minutes if you include the credits. THR reports that it had to come in at under 170 minutes because that's the maximum time an IMAX feature will allow.
