I cannot believe I am writing this…but tickets for James Cameron’s “Avatar” are already on sale on movietickets.com and Fandango’s website. Yes, a movie that doesn’t get released till December 18th already has tickets for sale! While I understand 20th Century Fox needing to make back some of the reported $300 million budget, this is pretty early to be selling tickets.

The fact is…I don’t know what I’m doing this weekend, let alone December 18th. But if “Avatar” is on your radar, I’d go buy tickets right now…especially for an IMAX 3D theater as those are going to sell out fast. Of course only a fraction of theaters are on sale right now, but I checked my area and tickets are available for the midnight show  at the Universal Citywalk IMAX theater in Los Angeles. It’s going to sell out quick so buy tickets now. Think eBay.

Unless otherwise proven you should be putting the official price tag that fox is claiming it to be, which is $237M.

300M is just people smoking out of their ass. Also, there are few who say 400+M. But I am pretty sure all are wrong.

First of all this movie was greenlit with a budget of $190M. Go see the official press releases. They probably spent another 25-35M on the Research & development of 3d camera & e-motion capture technologies.

By the time the movie hits it will probably end up with a final price tag of 250-255M because they will be fixing some cgi and doing lots of tweaking and stuff.

A lot of these random 300+M figures are coming from those who think that after titanic JC will get 300M.

Another thing to let you know is that they will more than likely make back all of their investment on the technology created as a lot of directors are interested in using it. Hell Journey to centre of earth 3d used the camera system , FD3 is using it, Steven spielberg and Peter jackson are using the camera and emotion capture for Tintin, Paul anderson is using it on resident evil 4 movie. There are several movies in the line up that are using either the camera or emotion capture.

But you’re forgetting about marketing and distribution costs, which regularly add anywhere from $20 – $30 million (for tentpole releases, that is) to the studio’s cost.

I’d rather have Dick Cheney empty a hornet’s nest into my rectum while water-boarding me with my own excrement than watch James Cameron’s visual abomination that is AVATAR!

Now now, FilmFan, don’t be using hyperbole when you aren’t mature enough to form rational opinions.

Hey Sean, FilmFan is entitled to his opinion. So what if he uses some rather colourful exaggerations to get his point across. Actually, his comments were pretty funny and remind me of something George Carlin might’ve said when discussing something he didn’t like. So what if FilmFan doesn’t like Cameron films. Perhaps he simply doesn’t trust Cameron’s judgement to make another great story…remember True Lies and Titanic? Personally, I think Avatar will at least present some good eye candy and be an above par sci-fi movie, but if someone has a beef with Cameron, I think it’s justified.

First of all, folks, stop hating Titanic. It didn’t earn 1.8 billion dollars and 11 Oscars for nothing. We’re not talking about some cheap Michael Bay film here. And True Lies is an awesome movie too.

Anyway, I wish I could get some advanced tickets.

Actually, tickets aren’t on sale (or at least where I am located)

All they simply are doing is listing the film in their database.

Then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started selling tickets about a month or two early…
