AVATAR Worldwide Box Office at $727 Million in Just 12 Days

As of this writing Avatar, James Cameron’s tale of a culture clash between human and Na’vi on the fantastical world of Pandora, has made $726,612,776 worldwide in its first twelve days of release according to Box Office Mojo. Domestically the film has grossed $250,419,951, while international audiences have contributed a whopping $476,192,825 to the increasingly impressive box office total. For more admiration on how well Avatar has done so far and speculation on how much higher it could soar, hit the jump.

avatar_movie_poster_final_01.jpgFor all the fretting that was done prior to Avatar‘s release about how it could possibly recoup its budget, the box office is large enough quick enough that 20th Century Fox accountants no longer have cause for concern. Only on Christmas Eve has Avatar earned less than $16 million domestically, and the film’s highest earning day ($28.3 million) came more than a week after its release date, a relative rarity for a non-platform release. Holiday theater spending habits apply to the upcoming New Year’s weekend, so Avatar is poised to continue to sell massive amounts of tickets well into January, if not beyond.

Avatar‘s domestic appeal sure is impressive, but its earning power overseas is breathtaking. One of the most common criticisms of Avatar, that its plot and themes are well-worn territory, may actually prove to be a financial asset; such familiarity transcends the language barrier, leaving audiences who do not speak English free to focus on the main selling point of the film, the dazzling visuals. Avatar has truly struck a chord with viewers abroad, who have supplied nearly two-thirds (65.5%) of the film’s spectacular gross. For comparison, recent box office wunderkind The Dark Knight earned 46.8% of its $1 billion worldwide total via international theaters.

The film is likely to cross $750 million in the next day or two, all but guaranteeing that Avatar will earn more than $1 billion worldwide by the end of its run. If it does so, Avatar would become only the fifth member of the exclusive $1 billion club, joining Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and The Dark Knight.

Avatar may not exactly be a second strike of lightning for Cameron; it would be quite the feat to best his previous effort, Titanic, which topped the box office for fifteen straight weeks from December to April on a ride to become the world’s highest grossing movie ever with $1.84 billion. But at the rate its going, Avatar seems destined to be among the top five worldwide earners ever, and may even settle right below Titanic on the list. As Avatar continues to hit new milestones, we’ll keep you updated.

That's what I am talking about James Cameron is the best baby.Only he could have pulled this type of movie I know some people say the story is simple but for me it was a cinematic experience in 3d Imax and I think that's is what they intend to make this movie about giving people a Cinematic experience.Good Article Bro it may not be Titanic but it is on it's way to create the highest grossing movie of 2009. I think Cameron has silenced his critics by giving people a great ride in 3d.

“The film is likely to cross $750 million in the next day or two, all but guaranteeing that Avatar will earn more than $1 billion worldwide by the end of its run.”

Avatar crossed 800m today. It'll cross 1b by the end of the weekend.

It is astounding that the movie has made around $800million in less than two weeks

    Good but i did find one flaw in the article, you write;

“One of the most common criticisms of Avatar, that its plot and themes are well-worn territory, may actually prove to be a financial asset; such familiarity transcends the language barrier, leaving audiences who do not speak English free to focus on the main selling point of the film, the dazzling visuals. You reference dark knight as earning nearly 50% of its total from the foreign market but it had a complex plot (characters dying / not dying / the dynamic of the joker / batman / dent / twoface characters etc etc)

its not a big point but i'm just saying its the fact theyre good films, yes avatar is not necessarily a great film, in fact it didnt really need to be live action, in 3D or have such a big budget, the story struck me as being reminiscent of a 90s cartoon

so i think alot of this repeat viewing and 'must see' behaviour is coming from the visuals and 3D experience alone, which is no bad thing, and Cameron knows this so the story is very easy to understand

I think Avatar will clear the 1.75 billion mark. I would guess it will become the highest grossing movie ever made. The word of mouth is spreading, the crowds are building bigger and bigger and staying steady. This is the first movie in my life I saw twice at the theater.

Me too! I’ve never even wanted to see a film twice at the cinema, but as soon as I walked out of this one the first time, I knew I was going to see it again in Imax (first time standard 3D at local cinema). Way bigger crowd than the first time too. People talking about recycled story are missing the point. The whole thing is like a work of art, you’ve got to take it as a whole experience. You don’t walk into a gallery and go through saying “painting of a woman… another one… painting of a battle… woman again… another battle… some old guy… woman…”. Or listen to music and say “singing about love… pretty girls… love again… nostalgia…”. You look or listen at them each individually and take in what there is in it.

I saw a lot of quality movies this year, and Avatar is easily my favourite. No it’s not got the most memorable story, or the greatest characterisation, but if people say “what is your favourite MOVIE this year” then I say Avatar. You go in that cinema, you aren’t reading a book.

I don’t think it will top Titanic but I am certain it will come in a close second. Pretty freaking amazing.

As a sci-fi fan and a great film lover in general, I really loved this film. I went to see it three times already and can’t wait to see it again. The portrayal of the characters, Jake and Neytiri in particular, draws you in, and the way the story is told makes you not want to leave. I LOVE the realism in the subtleties of their body language. I’ve seen a lot of people say, myself included, that by the end of the film you want to stay on Pandora and/or become one of the Omaticaya/Na’Vi. As a writer and hopeful director someday, I was very impressed by J.Cameron’s devotion to the story he had, that he waited until he could make the vision that was inside his head. I love all his movies and some of them are in my top favs (Aliens, Terminator) so it’s cool that there’s another to add to my list. Just goes to show that word of mouth really works. I’m so glad for a non-sequel/remake/reboot movie!

Also, I agree about what the article said about the theme/selling point overseas, as I am in Japan and could see based on the large audiences each time that universal themes which everyone can understand/identify with are what sell the best.

OSCAR nomination for best picture, best director – James Cameron(big chance win for 2nd time),best writing (original screenplay),best actor in a supporting role – Stephen Lang(possible),best music (score) – James Horner(won in Titanic),best music (song) – I See You – Leona Lewis, best film editing, best sound mixing, best sound editing, best visual effects,10 nominations(at least) at 82nd Annual Academy Award in 2010 are already in hand, beat the record of The Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King for second place of all time box office($1,14 billion) is easy, beat Titanic for 1st place($1,84 billion) – i don’t think so(things have changed a lot since Titanic),if James Cameron win the second Academy Award for best director i think it’s not a big surprise because he work 12 years for this movie.
I saw it twice in RealD 3D cinema and Dolby 3D cinema at nearestl theatre in Jakarta Indonesia,I saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in Jakarta Imax theatre and i was amazed but we don’t have IMAX 3D format yet in our country for playing Avatar in Imax 3D format,so i planed to see it in closest neighbouring country who have Imax 3D theatre,it’s in Bangkok Thailand and Manila Philliphines,i’m dying and desperately to get there, and i will get there soon.

Yes, the 3D aspect of the film has helped with sales, to deny that is to be ignorant. From what I’ve read, Mr.Cameron has said he wants to bring people back to the theatre. So since the true film (the 3D version) cannot be recorded by some fool with a camera, people have to choose whether to wait for it to come out on dvd or see it as it was meant to be seen, in the theatre. I’ve seen it twice in digital 3D theatre, I’ll see it again in IMAX 3D. Why? Because in my opinion it is the most beautiful movie experience of my life and money is just that. If you want what you consider an original or deeper story then make your own movie. To be honest, there hasn’t been a 100% original story for a couple of thousand years. Think about it.
