Production will be getting underway in the next few months on Marvel’s highly, highly anticipated sequel The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, and when your first film smashes box office records in its opening weekend, a lot of people are going to be itching to hear every last bit of news regarding the follow-up.  Which brings us to today’s quotes from Scarlett Johansson, who has gotten a look at writer/director Joss Whedon’s script for the star-studded superhero pic.  She doesn’t have much to say detail-wise about the film, but fans will surely be interested to hear her thoughts on Whedon’s screenplay, which she describes as “dark” and “cerebral.”  Hit the jump to read on.

avengers-2-age-of-ultron-scarlett-johanssonSpeaking with Parade Magazine, Johansson said that she’s currently in prep mode for Age of Ultron and gave a tiny tease of what fans can expect from the sequel:

“Joss [Whedon], again, is back, wrote the script, and is directing. I think the script is dark and it’s dry, it’s got this amazing one-liner, glass-cutting sense of humor. Obviously the script is very cerebral. It doesn’t lose that exciting comic book aspect that people enjoyed in the first film, but it’s smart and it feels like the next installment. It doesn’t feel like a rehashing, it feels like these characters are moving forward, plotlines are moving forward. It’s deep and I think that’s why people really respond to the Marvel universe, because the films are fun and exciting and have all that flashy stuff, but there’s a gravity to them. People can expect that gravity this time around.”

Again, not a lot by way of plot details, but it’s still interesting to hear an official reaction to the Avengers 2 script.  Surely we’ll hear more soon with filming getting ready to begin in March.  The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015.

Why do you do this? I’m seriously baffled as to why you do this for every comment this kid posts. Do you scan each articles comments section looking for this kid for the sake of doing this? I’m not being rhetorical. I’d like you to explain this ritual of yours. Thanks.

When I saw Emily Blunt in the Edge of Tomorrow trailer, I thought to myself that she would have been an incredible Black Widow. I just really struggle to buy Scarlet Johansson in the role. There is a big difference between being tough and making a tough face which is like the difference between the two to me and there is a good chance that I am way off on all of this but ScarJo has never struck me as someone who is very deep or thoughtful. She has always struck me as someone who is very polite and elegant for the cameras and knows how talk excitedly and how to hit all the buzz words that the producers want her to say, but when the cameras are gone and its a one on one conversation I just imagine she is a bit vapid to talk to and can’t hold a conversation if its not about how pretty she is or something similar and I don’t think she knows much about Marvel comics beyond what she is told she needs to know. Emily Blunt just doesn’t strike me as someone who isn’t quite as vain.

I don’t see Emily Blunt, but I kinda agree with you on Scarjo. They make her look a little manly as Black Widow (not the case in IM2). I would have preferred a Russian accent. I feel like Mila Jovokovitch would have been a solid fit, but that might be too obvious.

Also Milla’s acting isn’t so great. Mostly bad, really.

Scarlett is awful as Black Widow. They should have hired Blunt.

I am still hoping for Hayley Atwell to have at least a cameo in A2. She was so amazing in CA.

      • Leo Spaceman

They tried to hire Blunt. Favreau made a real effort for Iron Man 2 but Blunt was contractually obligated to film Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black which caused a scheduling conflict. It is a shame that the studio wouldn’t be flexible with her because they really held her back by tying her to that sinking ship.

Cerebral and weighty are exactly the two last definitions I’d expect to associate with a Marvel Studio flick.

The script is dark and dry? So Marvel must really be changing directions with this film.

I come to the Avengers as a fan of Joss Whedon, so I am excited to hear that AOU has a dark side. Looking at his work on television, especially Buffy and Angel, he really brought so much more the 2nd time around and really made those characters and stories come to life.

    • Grim N’ Gritty

Nolan’s influence has reached even Whedon. Good.
