Even though I think Guardians of the Galaxy trumped 2012′s Avengers in overall quality, I wouldn’t count the supremely talented Joss Whedon out in terms of one-upping it in the Avengers: Age of Ultron. He’s certainly not lacking in ability and, if this synopsis is any indication (and one assumes that it is), Age of Ultron will be insanely eventful.  It also looks like it corrects the original film’s first act issues.

“When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.”  Hit the jump to check out the full synopsis.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr.Chris EvansChris HemsworthMark RuffaloScarlett JohanssonJeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie SmuldersJames Spader, and Aaron Taylor-JohnsonAvengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015.

Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on May 1, 2015.

    • Leo Spaceman

Honestly, I would love to see Ultron just F**king with The Avengers and go and break out the Abomination just because he can. Hulk and Thor having to break away from Ultron to Tag Team the Abomination would be awesome.

      • eternalozzie

did you write the random villain batman movies?

      • Leo Spaceman

It wouldn’t be random, it would be a nice call back like Scarecrow in the Dark Knight And in the Dark Knight Rises. He completely exists in the universe and unlike the Iron Monger, Whiplash, The Red Skull, the “Manderin”, the Destroyer, Malekith, and Ronan he isn’t dead yet. Not just the heroes survive in comics the bad guys are always coming back at the worst times possible its fun as hell to see it and why can’t Ultron and the Abomination team up? Didn’t whedon want Ulyron and Loki to team up in the first Avengers? An all out three part summer event Heroes vs baddies brawl would be epic as hell.

      • Vulcan

And they mention Abomination in the Marvel One-Shot, when the World Security Council want Coulsen to release Abomination and make him an Avenger, but he refuses, and sends Tony Stark to piss off General Ross.

And I’m still not convinced Red Skull is dead. I think he is a prisoner of Thanos, who is using him to learn about the Earth and the Tesseract. How else would Thanos know it was on Earth?

      • Lovecraftlives

Red Skull is not dead, more like lost in space. I think they’ll bring him back, but after Phase 3. He probably show up in Captain America 4, after Chris Evans has left the series. I think that would be great, because they’re are some good Red Skull storylines out there.

No way if anything he will be back to fight Steve Rogers Cap before Buckey takes over as Cap. Cap ends up sacrificing his life again to put Red Skull but in the negetive zone or whatever they want to call it in the MCU.

Actually Whedon said once that even during the early stages of Avengers 1, he always had Ultron as the bad guy for Avengers 2 at the back of his head.

My problem with this plot summary. Is it released by Marvel? How come every site that speaks about it refers to StitchKingdom and not Marvel.com o_O

    • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

It’s got to be official. All major media sites are posting it.

  • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

My most anticipated film of 2015! I cannot hold still! Everytime I see news about AOU, I get anxious! I’m guessing since MARVEL released the plot synopsis, there should be an official poster coming very soon and an official teaser trailer before the year is done.

    • Beefdong

Days of Future Past came out with their first trailer in October of last year if I recall correctly. I’m guessing no later than November for the first trailer.

      • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

Agreed. With the film dropping early May, they will want/need to get the buzz started around that time. It’s brilliant marketing. This film will make more $$$ than the first one without a doubt. DISNEY/MARVEL is going to market the hell out of this movie!

      • Nir

Unless they copy Mockingjay part 1 and release a teaser trailer 4 months closer prior to release.

      • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

        I doubt it…

      • Nir

I hope not. It better be released at least sometime in Oct.

The hype & anticipation for Age of Ultron is off the scale.I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched the original teaser!

  • Strong Enough

let’s hope it’s as thrilling as TWS. watching that movie had me on the edge of my seat. i want Joss to put these heroes who always joke around through real danger. maybe get their nice smiles cracked a few times

    • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

I just watched it for the 5th time on BLU-RAY! The movie is pure crack! AGE OF ULTRON will be incredible! There’s no need to hope.

I can’t stop rewatching TWS action scenes! I ffwd it to these parts.

      • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

When TWS makes his initial debut, it is incredible! The character design is flawless.

      • Nir

Agreed. TWS outfit is sooo badass without the jacket showing his metal arm; def my fav MCU outfit! And when he topples Fury’s SUV then he slowly sidesteps……awesome!

      • João Paulo

I agree the best fight scenes of the year in my opinion and one of the best I ever see in a movie.

      • Nobody

My favorite action scene starts with the elevator fight and ends with him riding out on the bike. Simply bad-ass perfection!

      • Nir

Me too, and how he takes down that fighter jet with his shield then the way he dismounts the jet then a close up of the shield! And his fight with TWS.

The Winter Soldier was just a giant car chase … i don’t get the nerd love for it.

I agree. I just bought it on BD and watched it and was frankly a little bored.

first marvel movie i felt that someone wasn’t going to make it. it had real stakes, real thrills not just family action.

      • Nobody

Exactly. One of the few superhero movies that didn’t feel so in your face like a superhero movie, if that makes any sense. It has everything I want out of a James Bond film that I’ve never gotten from one.

      • ShpotSb

Because this so called giant car chase was very well directed.

    • vpuik

Based on the footage at comic con they’re going to crap beat out of them

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I didn’t realize the Avengers were so musical. They actually crap beats?

Avengers are known to let the beat….uhhhhh…..DROP!

    • Kyle Chandler

Totally agree. I really enjoyed the Avengers, but my biggest complaint was that there was never really any sense of peril or real danger. They just joked around the whole time, which kind of cut the tension for me since they seemed to have it so under control.

  • http://buzzabit.com/aaron/ Aaron Sullivan

I have high hopes and great expectations, but that description belies an incredibly huge cast of characters. 3 new villains/heroes and another hero added to the original 7 or 8 heroes? 10 characters we all want to see. If each is taking up a 10th of the movie that’s 12 minutes each. 12 minutes each. Go go Joss-ensemble-cast!

    • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

Everything will work out just fine. I had my concerns about the first film but we all know how awesome it turned out! All characters had more than enough screentime. JOSS knows how to make a film. Character development and interaction is his forte.

      • Professor Dickweed

No, we don’t all know how awesome the first one turned out cause it sucked.

      • TAINT_BUTTHOLE

Except that it kicked major ass and you are totally wrong.

    • Falco

I feel ya. My biggest concern is that Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch won’t get enough screen time. They’re my biggest draw towards this sequel.

  • Nir

    Nothing new here.

  • LEM

I’m guessing this peacekeeping program is what Tony is hoping will take the reigns for him as Ironman but it goes irobot on everything so cue the avengers to kick some ass.

    • Leo

A dormant peacekeeping program sounds like something that was created in the past, perhaps by a certain retired scientist who can shrink and grow?

      • LEM

I really hope they have that tie in.

      • Leo

Me too. And it would be awesome if they had some flashbacks in Antman with Pym working on the program in the past.

      • Falco

        Potential end credit scene?… ;)

  • Manuel Orozco

Looks like it’s gonna be as good as the Avengers 1

    • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

Better! That’s saying a lot considering the fact that AVENGERS is a 5 star film!

      • Manuel Orozco

I actually gave it 4 but let’s see what happens

      • Falco

Agreed. AoU will be closer to 5 stars than the first. Initially, I thought Avengers was 5, but the more I rewatch it, the more I kind of see how watered down it is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still oozing bad-ass, but the story is weak as hell. Loki is a weak villain for the Avengers, imo, and I’m plenty fatigued from seeing him as the threat. But the first movie was an origin film or sorts and Marvel needed to get that out of the way to pave the way for the big guns.

Generally speaking, the Marvel sequels are always better, as will be the case with AoU.

      • Manuel Orozco

And to be honest I don’t follow Marvel but I only saw Avengers because of all the hype and success. I saw GOTG this summer and that’s the best I’ve seen from Marvel

      • Falco

I also liked Guardians the best out of Marvel’s catalogue. X-Men: DoFP is a damn close second, and TWS is right behind that.

      • vpuik

Yeah, but this one goes to 11.

      • Crack Addict Jack

        Temper your expectations there cowboy

    • ya!

      BETTER!

      • Manuel Orozco

What ever Marvel fan expects isn’t it

  • kf

This actually doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know.

    • http://www.edwardmordrake.com ~EDWARD MORDRAKE~

It solidifies that JARVIS is VISION. I knew that from early on information but not everyone does. Also, it eludes to HANK PYM actually creating ULTRON.

“If this synopsis is any indication, Age of Ultron will be insanely eventful”

More like a fluffed up cast list than a synopsis…

    • Falco

I feel like that’s all they need to do, in terms of promo. Lol. If that list doesn’t get anyone to see it, I’m assuming those people have given up on seeing superhero movies, or blockbusters in general. Or maybe just life.

    • Falco

And I hadn’t thought of this before, but the Maximoff twins aren’t listed by their superhero names. Which makes sense I guess, but that just makes their roles in the movie even more epic.

  • Falco

If this screenplay succeeds with this many characters, I hope the “too many characters” excuse for why certain movies suck can finally be put to rest.

    • lee

You don’t think the first Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy did the job?

      • Falco

No I do, you’re right about those. I’m just thinking about how much further AoU is going to push that roster. The list of characters is so insanely huge, it will be the ultimate destruction of that excuse!

      • Kyle Chandler

I think it always has and always will come down to whether or not the story can support that many characters, and I think you’re right that people shouldn’t just assume that a movie will be bad if there are too many characters. The primary difference with the marvel films is that they are bringing together previously introduced characters for the most part (guardians was a team origin story, so that’s a little different).

With Batman vs. Superman I think people are concerned that they’re introducing so many new characters, and we really haven’t even gotten to know batman or superman very well yet.

In Age of Ultron, they’re really only introducing a few new characters, so as long as the story can support it, I think it’s smooth sailing.

      • Falco

I guess the excuse is always used with Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s especially a cop-out with Spider-Man 3 because it already had the majority of its characters developed in 1 & 2. TASM2 is just a train wreck all around, with narrative and characters. But too often the “too many characters” excuse is used instead of “the final screenplay was garbage”.

Guardians built it’s characters from scratch, and nailed it. It’s a rare gem and should be held as a standard for all forthcoming ensemble movies.

He’s going to be different and bad-ass and unique in his own way. X-Men Quicksilver reminded me more of the Evolution character. Evan Guardians was one the best Marvel films but only because of Avengers. To call it anything less is just trying to get reaction. If that was true it would be at 500 million and not 300 million and do you think TMNT would have any chance of going head to head with AOU?? I don’t get why people like you take shots at Avengers then kiss the ground Josh Weadon walks on when you talk about big movies. Face it was the best of that year and third of all time and that should be the least you can say. If their is anything worse than a fanboy bitching about Man Of Steel it’s one talking down on one of the only comicbook movies to make a billion dollars that quick and still be watchable two years later because I just watched it Sunday.

    • Kyle Chandler

I don’t think it is taking a shot at Avengers to say that GotG was an overall better film. I certainly liked Guardians a bit more than Avengers, though can you believe we have both of those phenomenal films in our pockets?

I don’t think that either film is bulletproof, and there are fair criticisms for both. People will have their individual preference, so just mellow out a little and go watch Avengers another time :)

      • Falco

Guardians was better, imo. Avengers didn’t need to do anything but be bad-ass by virtue of having the team assemble and kick ass, which is all it really did. Guardians needed to be perfect in all aspects (character development, strong villain, effects, action sequences, humor, emotion) – and it was.

      • Kyle Chandler

I tend to agree with that. Guardians impacted me on an emotional level, while avengers was almost a pure roller-coaster ride film experience (all excitement, basically). I still don’t consider that a knock against avengers.

      • bidi

i respectfully disagree with you about the strong villain point. Ronan was basically every sci fi villain ever. he was fine for the purposes of the movie, but he was one of the few things that kept GotG from being truly great. i think the villains is where Marvel needs the most work. they get great actors (for the most part) to give great performances (for the most part), but they’re all still just one-dimensional, mustache-twirling bad guys. i think Loki and the Winter Soldier have been the only complex villains worth spending time with. but Ultron seems like he could be VERY interesting…

      • Falco

I agree that Loki is a more complex character, which is maybe why I don’t feel like he’s a strong enough villain. I get the impression that there’s still potential for him to be good. I’m ignorant to the comics, so I could be totally off base. I just don’t find him threatening. Don’t get me wrong though, I love Loki, I’m just a bit tired of him if his character arc has ended.

Ronan was run-of-the-mill, but I liked him more because he actually fought and was a physical threat. He was just oozing evil. Nebula reminded me of Loki, and I guess they pretty much are the same-ish. But I do agree with you that Ronan wasn’t a game changer.

      • JBug

Loki from the comics is very different from the movies in that the comics portray him as a straight up bad guy, while the movies make him a little bit more confusing. I personally don’t like Hiddlestone’s Loki. He’s more power hungry child than sinister genius god of chaos. His evil plots are one dimensional and don’t have much creativity to them. Thor 1: kill all of the frost giants? not very threatening/menacing. Avengers: open a portal to unleash an army from another dimension: nothing creative or brilliant about this. Thor 2: does he want to avenge his mother or steal his father’s throne. It’s hard to tell and I think its because he doesn’t know and he is constantly changing his mind about what he wants. I don’t think Loki is that good of an actor (Hiddlestone is great, I’m talking about Loki’s deception abilities) and that he hides his true motives. I think he is just confused.

      • Falco

Oh yes, and the Winter Soldier was an awesome villain/character. One of the few characters I could shed a tear for.

      • Sterling

I agree with you on most of what you’re saying and definitely that I think Guardians is a better movie overall than Avengers, but I feel like the villain aspect wasn’t perfect. In my opinion, I feel that Ronan didn’t have enough of a fleshing out back story about why he is like that and his motives. The execution was a little one-dimensional. I understand that this was most likely to put most of the focus on the bringing together of the Guardians and to keep the movie concise, but I don’t think many people would have mind sitting through an extra 20 or so minutes to get a better understanding of Ronan. I’m sad that he had to die so soon as well because Lee Pace really did a good job with what he was given from the script and had great screen presence. I feel he would have been good to keep alive and come back in another story. Overall though Guardians is a phenomenal movie that I never felt bored through.
