Yesterday, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked a bit about Ant-Man and hiring Peyton Reed to direct.  Today, after screening two minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Feige spoke with IGN about the highly-anticipated film.  The reel included director Joss Whedon talking about Avengers Tower, and there was also some pre-viz of Iron Man fighting Hulk.  Feige elaborated on both of these aspects.

avengers-tower-movieFor those who saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you can probably surmise that helicarriers are no longer the best place to put your superhero team, especially now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is defunct.  Feige explained to IGN where the group will now hang their helmets:

“Last time we saw Stark Tower, from The Avengers, it had gotten beat up a little bit thanks to Hulk and thanks to Loki and the Chituari, and Pepper and Tony were standing over a table looking at plans” he explained. “That’s where we pulled out and all the letters had fallen away except the ‘A’ in Stark. So what they were doing was retro-fitting for The Avengers. And that’s what we see in this next film.

“S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone – for people who are following along. S.H.I.E.L.D. was disbanded and brought down at the end of The Winter Soldier because it turned out to not be the best organisation ever. So Tony’s bank-rolling The Avengers now. And he’s bank-rolling their headquarters. So it’s now Avengers Tower.

“Tony designed it so in addition to a hanger for a brand-new Quinjet, laboratories, places where he can build and store his Iron Man suits, there are I believe two bars. Beautiful multiple space living rooms which are perfect for parties and social gatherings. But it’s a primary location in the film this time around.”

avengers-2-age-of-ultron-hulkbuster-scaleI’m getting a big smile just thinking about how Tony has taken what should be a super-serious headquarters for the superheroes tasked with saving the world, and then added in a space for drinking and parties.

But outside the tower, there’s plenty of mayhem including the highly-anticipated throwdown between Hulk and the Iron Man’s “Hulkbuster” Armor.  Feige talked about how important it was for him to get this scene in the movie:

“There are a lot of scenes that you should be getting excited about” he explained. “That is certainly one of them. I think I said a long time ago when Joss [Whedon] first did his six-page or 10-page outline for Avengers, there was a lot of work and the movie’s adapted quite a bit since then, but there were like six or seven signature things just in that. I said ‘Joss, even if we don’t do anything else. Just do these seven things, that’s enough for the movie. Now let’s get to work and put it all together.’ Those things are in the movie and are amazing, of which that sequence is one.”

Sounds like the only thing I’ll be missing from this one is having Falcon pop up. I guess even in an ensemble flick like this you can’t pack in everything.

      Unless you’re Zack Snyder

      • milo

Good point. I should have said you can’t pack in everything without screwing it up.

      • Spanky

        Right.. so lets see

Main heros and villians, not counting supporting eg. Fury or Lois Lane, or one off villians eg. Victor Zsasz who is reported to be part of a quick opening segment with Batman

Avengers 2 will have – Ironman, Thor, Hulk, Capt America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Ultron, Loki? (probably), Thanos? (probably)

BvS will have – Superman, Batman, WW, Aquaman (minor role), Cyborg (minor role), Luthor, Doomsday (rumor so far)

Hmm….which one is packing in too much?

      • bork1138

not that I have any preference on Marvel/DC thing, but all those characters in Avengers 2 have had about 3 appearances, most with their own films.

So cramming all that character development for the reported 5 villains and various heroes for BvS might be a little overdoing it, especially since MoS was a bit of a noisy mess at times with just one character

Bingo. The problem isn’t so much having a lot of characters in one film, but *introducing* a lot of characters in one film. Although it’s possible that BvS has a bunch of glorified cameos, although they way they are hyping those new characters, doing that would leave some people disappointed.

I might just be the pessimistic sort, but I foresee disappointment either way.

You’re spouting a lot of misinformation in this comment.

Why do you think Loki is in this movie at all? He’s right where he wants to be post Thor 2. And Thanos is likely just going to have a post credit scene, so that’s a minor character too. Just saying, you’re making some odd assertions.

Edit: Also, Whedon has flat out said Loki has no part in this sequel.

      • blahblahblah

Right, so let’s see… Spanky doesn’t grasp the difference between established characters reappearing in a sequel and a bunch of new characters being shoehorned into a movie in a tactless way

  • YodaRocks

Looking forward to this movie. It would be some of those blockbusters which probably won’t suck.

What movie website isn’t going to cover the hell out of marvel movies, particularly Avengers? You are aware that the first one was the #3 grossing movie of all time, right?

I know. It was a joke. calm your willies
