The first reaction to Avengers: Infinity War has arrived! Now this isn’t some random person on the internet claiming they saw the highly anticipated Marvel Studios sequel and offering unverifiable details. This reaction comes from a trusted source: Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 filmmaker James Gunn. Now, it would be incredibly surprising if Gunn had hopped on Twitter after an early viewing of the movie to say, “This film is terrible. I quit Marvel.” So in a way, while this reaction is encouraging, it’s kind of like, “What did you expect?”

On the other hand, Gunn isn’t really one to BS his fans so his reaction here has value. And, of course, it’s literally the only verified reaction we know of to this super secret movie, so that in and of itself makes it noteworthy. Here’s what he had to say:

So it’s official: Avengers: Infinity War currently has a 100% on Marvel Directors Rotten Tomatoes.

In actuality, the first reactions at large should probably be heading our way fairly soon. Marvel Studios usually premieres its movies about a month before they hit theaters, so the cast can kick off the press tour in the U.S. and then go abroad. Since Disney moved the release date up to April 27th at the last minute this is a bit of a unique scenario, but the premiere should be happening within the next few weeks, at which point the first reactions and reviews will follow.

It’s encouraging that Gunn felt strongly enough about seeing the movie to go ahead and tweet his reaction. No doubt if the filmmaker wasn’t crazy about Infinity War, he would have just kept silent for the time-being. Gunn and other Marvel Cinematic Universe filmmakers had a hand in collaborating with Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo to ensure tonal consistency, since this sequel brings together every disparate MCU character we’ve seen on the screen thus far. Did they pull it off? Gunn seems to think so.

So if Gunn has seen the movie, that means it’s in some form close to finality and may be screening for other Marvel directors or industry insiders imminently. Hold on to your butts, folks. Infinity time is almost here.
