The first clip from Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers has gone online.  In the clip, Natasha Romanoff aka “Black Widow” (Scarlett Johansson) demonstrates proper phone etiquette before showing that she doesn’t need superpowers to kick ass (unless you count boob-jiggling as a superpower, which I do).  Also, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) mentions that “Barton has been compromised.”  For those who don’t understand the reference, Barton is Clint Barton aka “Hawkeye” (Jeremy Renner).

The clip is very Whedonesque with Natasha’s flippant attitude towards her captors, and the knowledge that she’s about to bust out and beat them up.  It’s a scene that easily could have been ripped from Buffy, Angel, or Firefly (I haven’t watched all of Dollhouse so I’m not sure on that one).  Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. JacksonThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.  If you missed them on Monday, click on the corresponding links for our set visit, and interviews with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Clark Gregg, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige, and writer-director Joss Whedon.

  1. Not too shabby for a first clip. However, anyone else reminded of that scene from Killer Elite when she did that chair flip?

      • Fury already has a poster… He’s had one since the first posters were released. This is what happens when people pull the race card so quick, you look like an idiot and no one wants to hurt feelings. But here’s the thing, every race on the planet has idiots. I’m not judging you for your skin color because I don’t care what it is, I’m judging you because you’re an idiot.

I hate Scarlett Johanson for some reason.

David’s Consciousness: Then you are obviously a homo/gay/faggity fag fag for some reason. :)

  2. Looks a lot like the Cameron Diaz chair scene in Charlie’s Angels…little more dramatic though. Not the most original scene but I’m still excited as hell for this movie.

I believe that was Drew Barrymore’s scene sir………..

  3. Ugh, you just reminded Whedon made Buffy, now I hate even more than he’s forced to work with Scarlett, just imagine if he had a much better actress that actually fit the role.

  4. Stunt woman -Scarlet edit wasn’t that good :(
And yes, she must have used som super hard hairspray to knock out one of the guys with her hair. :P

  5. Johansson is a fine actress. Comes across as an intelligent woman off-screen. Obviously attractive.

The inner-fanboy just doesn’t think she’s a good fit for this role. She’s not threatening. Which is fine in certain action films, like Zoe Saldana in ‘Colombiana’.

‘The Avengers’ is working with established characters. While it’s impossible to appease every comic book fan (ain’t that putting it mildly?), producers could have done more. It looks like they went for the name rather the better fit.

Granted, she appeared in Iron Man 2, but Black Widow could have been recast.

Having to see Johansson on the big screen in that outfit is a champagne problem. I’ll get over. Just seems a little off.

Posting about it makes me realize how little I actually care.

    • You don’t get it do you? She’s not supposed to look threatening. That’s the whole point–you underestimate her because she just looks like a pretty woman.

And then she kicks your ass three different ways to Sunday.

How would she look threatening anyhow? I’m curious about what this means. Should she look more butch?

  6. Perhaps you shouldn’t have preceded your statement about not caring with a couple of 100 words which seem to indicate pretty definitively that you DO in fact care. Just a thought.

  7. Kinda wish she had the Russian accent she’s supposed to have but they omitted it from Iron Man 2 as well sooooo guess I saw that coming.

  8. I just LOVE Coulson at like 0,34, when he is “put on hold”. That tells us so much about the characters and also tells us this movie has Joss Whedons fingerprints on it. The latter more than anything gives me hope that this movie is going to be… well, it tells me that I’m going to like it anyway. :D

  9. That was great! I love the way Agent Coulson is just patiently waiting, listening to the fighting, completely unconcerned that she might be in danger, because he knows she’s not. Yes, this is a definite Buffy moment. And anybody who doesn’t recognize Buffy the Vampire Slayer as one of the best T.V. shows ever made is below moronic.

  10. And Hank Pym(giant man)? and Janet Van Dyne (wasp)? PLEASE SOMEONE ANSWER why they don’t appear in this movie? :S ahh!

    • Because Marvel made the decision to go with established film franchise characters? Everyone in this film has been used in some large or small capacity in their previous films, and Hank Pym (who, by the way, SOMEONE SHOULD ANSWER YOU that he would be Ant-Man, not Giant Man at this point…) didn’t fit into their already established world.

Whedon actually wanted to cast Nathan Fillion (god) as Hank Pym, but it wasn’t in the cards.

Also, shut up and enjoy the film for what it is, nowadays no one can just ****ing enjoy a film for what is good in it, it all has to be about what ISN’T in it for some stupid reason.
