After massive amounts of set photos and video from Joss Whedon’s The Avengers leaking online, Disney and Marvel have apparently decided to start releasing official images from the movie.  After last week’s image, set photos, and head-shots, we now have five new images from the movie plus the previously-released image, all in hi-res.  There’s also a new official set photo in the bunch.  All in all, the images from the movie look pretty good.  I love the shot of Steve Rogers considering his updated outfit, and apparently Black Widow’s job is to just look bad-ass by firing two guns at once or calmly turning her back to explosions.

Hit the jump for the images.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, and Samuel L. Jackson.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Avengers:

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Marvel’s The Avengers” brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time.

  1. You what I find annoying is HollyWood doesnt want thier actors to keep on the mask and insist that thier faces are more important. In the case of the photo of Chris and Chris looking up. Can’t Joss do anything right or is he a Mason who doesn’t know shit about the Comics. Joss should of made Chris keep the the Mask on. NWO Avengers Assemble! Please Joss respond to my comment.

    • I think in the universe that has been established in The First Avenger, there wouldn’t be an American through history who didn’t know who the legend of Steve Rogers. So really, the mask isn’t a necessity.

      Hawkeye, on the other hand…

      • @C10P

Good point. In addition to what you’ve mentioned:

        1) Spy photos show Cap wearing his mask earlier on this scene.
        2) while comic artists can maintain a character’s expressiveness rather easily, such a task isquite difficult to pull-off with real people and real fabrics.

While one can respect the desire to be consistent with certain elements of the comics, the demand for masks would likely cause more problems than it would solve.

      • I think that is totally not true. It’s always about the moneyshot ‘ the Actors face’. Look at Christian Bale in Batman and how he was able to express is emotions and anger in that intergation scene in The Dark Knight with the mask on.

    • Look at Thor. Look at Cap…. clearly there’s been one hell of a fight. I think it’s safe to assume that the mask was destroyed.

      • Anybody who saw Spider-man 3 (uh) knows how they did everything possible to keep the mask off so that people could see the actors face. I understand what @Mik is saying. Captain America wheres a mask we like Comic books because of the uniforms which almost always have “mask”. that’s what makes it cool. I was watching Jim Lee do a sketch and he said, “now i’m gonna make her a super hero.” and he added a mask. Mask equals super hero 90% of the time.

      • The reason they kept taking the masks off in Spider-man 3 was so all the tears wouldn’t soak through the costumes

  2. Matt, why “apparently” have they decided to start releasing official images? It seems pretty apparent to me.

Even when you have nothing to complain about you seem to write in a tone that sounds like complaining. Always a pleasure.

  3. ANYONE NOTICE IN PIC WHERE EVANS IS STANDING IN FRONT OF LOCKER/COSTUME DISPLAY THAT THE HEADPEACE HAS HOLES FOR HIS EARS!!!

THE PIC OF CAP AND THOR LOOKING UP CONCERNS ME FOR ONE REASON…IF CAP HAS NO MASK FOR THIS FIGHT SCENE , THERES A GOOD CHANCE HE WONT HAVE ONE WHEN THEY ALL FIGHT THE HULK AFTER THE ALIEN BATTLE WHICH……….WILL………..ROYALLY……….SUCK!!….CAP NEEDS TO WEAR HIS MASK WHEN THEY FIGHT HULK, IF NOT THE STUDIO AND JOSS WHEDON ……..REALLY ……….REALLY ………….LET DOWN THE FANS.

  4. I think there’s a trailer coming out soon. That shot of Hemsworth and Evans looking up, that definitely looks like a trailer shot!

    • I agree man. I think this looks like a disaster. I also am inclined to believe that the reason they are putting out promotional material this early is because they know it will be a disaster.

  5. i don’t know much about Comic Books, BUT I KNOW JOSS WHEDON!

calling it a dissater feels like you don’t know the guy. WATCH FIREFLY PLEASE! it’s only 14 episodes. you’ll know this guy knows how to make a light and fun entertaining summer flick with very funny one liners(that works!)

  6. I’m just getting amazed at how much darker the actual production stills look than anything we’ve seen from on-lookers.

I’m liking the look of this movie – Cap & Thor standing next to each other actually look pretty badass – and I’ve been worried about this new Cap suit, but if he can get it all scuffed up and weather worn after a battle or two I think it’ll start looking cooler.

Even Sam Jackson looks badass. And that ain’t no -mutha-fuckin’ shit!

  7. Gonna love this movie, but did you know Bale as Batman will be in the new Superman movie? Actually just a thought, but I think with Bale as popular as Batman, he couldn’t let go of the part especially with Nolan giving his two cents on the subject. In another words, I think this will be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Avengers. I hope I am right
