New Promo Art for THE AVENGERS

     August 26, 2011

We’ve got some Avengers news today, and I’m elated to tell you that it is not set images or videos. A new piece of promo art has been unveiled for Marvel’s upcoming collection of comics entitled The Road to The Avengers, in which we’ll get in-continuity stories for Iron Man, Captain America, and the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The promo art isn’t really anything special, but it’s still The Avengers. Apparently Hawkeye will be sporting super cool sunglasses.

Hit the jump to check out the image. Directed by Joss Whedon, the film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston and Cobie Smulders. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

Here’s the promo art (via Bleeding Cool):

Here’s the production announcement for The Avengers:

Robert Downey, Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2″) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) as Thor, Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (“Thor,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are Alright”) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (“Iron Man 2″) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man,” “Thor”) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2″) as Nick Fury.  Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Marvel’s The Avengers” brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston (“Wallander”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Angels & Demons,” “Mamma Mia!”) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios’ feature “Thor.”

cool, im starting to see the resemblance between the hulk and mark ruffalo

  • LiamH

Captain America up front as it should be.

    • ChadBOT3K

      Precisely what I was thinking.

Along with the “…we have a Hulk” line I read about, I am starting to believe they may actually get this one right.

I almost teared up seeing the shield up front, “as it should be”.

  • Che

I still don’t get how Natalie Portman is not in this movie. I mean Thor finds a way back to earth and he doesn’t even stop for a quick visit, really Thor? The reason you went from jackass to hero in 48 hrs. and not even a “how you doin”?

    • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

I’d much rather see War Machine played by Don Cheadle again in this movie long, long before Natalie Portman shows up. She and Kat Dennings were annoying in Thor.

      • Che

True, they were. And I definitely want to see War Machine again and soon. But not having Jane Foster in the movie or Betty Ross or Pepper for that matter won’t make a lick of sense.

      • LiamH

Not having any of the love interests in the movie is fine except for maybe Sharon Carter. These guys were gathered to save the world, they can play around after that’s done. There are a lot more important matters to attend to.

      • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

@Che, while I agree not having those female co-stars may leave some gaps in the superheroes’ individual storylines, the Avengers movie is packed with characters as it is.

To have side characters from each respective movie would be like trying to include second-string players during an all-star game.

But I do agree with Liam H that Sharon Carter is a character who should be included in some way. But it seems like she wasn’t frozen as Captain America was.

      • LiamH

Frozen? Peggy Carter was in Captain America movie and no she was not frozen. It has been said that she is still alive, but I said Sharon Carter who is the niece of Peggy. Many have speculated that the agent at the end of Cap America movie was Sharon Carter.

I think she is needed in the Avengers movie to help Cap adjust to life in the future. She’s the only love interest I think might be necessary in the Avengers movie, everyone else not really.

I realize that it wouldn’t have been “grounded in reality,” but I would have really liked to have seen a more comic book version of Hawkeye’s costume.

I too would have liked Hawkeye to have had a better mask. I mean, Cap has the full blown outfit. Hawkeye coulda at least had a mask to hide his identity, or even incorporated it into a Visual (aiming) aid for his arrows.
And I wonder why Thors helmet isnt in this movie, looks better with it on. (Also, its safety wear for battle)

HULK however looks fantastic this time round, well, in the posters so far, and I think Ruffallo will be the best Banner so far, and surprise people. If they do get Banner and Hulk perfect now, I look forward to seeing more Hulk films! Lets hope the Cgi and compositing is up to scratch to match the poster designs.

Read The Ultimates. He actually looks really spot on for Ultimate Hawkeye and it’s only natural that they went with the Ultimate version in the first place considering they’ve pretty much done the same with all the other characters. I prefer this look tbh…there’s no way the mainstream universe version would work on the big screen, it’d look a little too ridiculous.

      • broski

meant this as a response to Brandon’s comment*

      • LB

@Hulky: All that purple stuff would look stupid on screen. Captain America, at least have his past as a showman or mascot for the army as his excuse. What would be Hawkeye’s excuse?

    • brandon

I knew the Ultimates argument was going to come up. I realize that a crazy purple uniform might look ridiculous on screen but Im sure they could have done something just to pay a little more tribute. It is a COMIC BOOK movie, by the way. A little bit of ridiculousness is permitted.

  • nkutz

Captain America is very, Very tall.

  • Harry

It’s cool, I’m a fan of artwork, but I still wanna see some real live action pics soon.

  • Nawtnt

    Awesome promo.

  • TheScarletSp1der

Am I the only one that sees this promo art as a bunch of other pieces of promo art for The Avengers tossed into one photo, with a LITTLE bit of new stuff and background??

I mean, come on, We’ve seen Thor in that same exact pose before. The same with Iron Man? the exact same drawing? just with different poses for the background heroes??

    Oh well. Pretty cool anyways.

  • Kal

In both pics so far Iron Man’s chest piece is circular when it should clearly be triangular as seen in Iron Man 2, just sayin for continuity’s sake.

    • Harry

He got a new set of armor again, kinda like Cap got some new threads too.

  • Jesus

What really makes me laugh is the text at the top of the poster. Really? This comic book series is to help “familiarize” audiences with the Avengers? Didn’t you JUST make a bunch of films that did just that? Sure, maybe for Fury, Hawkeye and Black Widow that makes sense, but it’s all nonsense because the people who are going to read the comic books are the ones who already know the important details anyways.

Great art, but that objective, or whatever it is, is failure.

Always a treat to see these guys together. I’m really digging Iron Man’s new suit:D Though I kinda like it better when his chest piece was triangular like that in his last flick. Why the heck did it go back and go circular?:P

  • LB

@Jesus: Marvel and DC usually release comic book tie-ins (apart from the movie adaptation comic) for their movies as promotional material. Maybe this is the cover. Plus, the movie is still for next year. So a little refresher could come in handy.

  • Joe

My eyes keep focusing on one character only and that’s the Hulk.
I have to say…he looks awesome in the artwork!
This is finally a look of Hulk I can identify and appreciate.
    Avengers 2012 is gonna rock!

  • Reggie

some pretty cool images of cap vs loki on fighting on set.

  • ozzie

yawn … this movie is going to suck … it doesn’t even have dr. pym or the wasp. they need to rename it “kind of the avenger almost, sort of”

    • Kenny

Please im begging you…dont watch this movie…we dont need anyone stupid in a theater of happy people

  • Brandon Avery

    I want Ant-Man

  • Loren

Not to sure about all these characters sharing a screen together. I hope it works.
