Watch THE AVENGERS Super Bowl TV Spot Tease; Plus Joss Whedon and Samuel L. Jackson Answer Fan Questions

     January 31, 2012

As Marvel is all about social media, the studio assembled a few of the creatives involved in the upcoming superhero pic The Avengers to answer some fan questions on Twitter today. Taking part in the discussion were director Joss Whedon and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, and Clark Gregg. Appropriately, Jackson kicked off the Q&A by tweeting a picture of himself flipping off the camera. The quartet talked a bit about the film (Whedon denied those ridiculous Spider-Man cameo rumors), and Marvel released a preview of the TV spot for the film that will play during the Super Bowl. The TV spot preview is pretty damn epic, and gives us a fantastic look at Hulk. I have a feeling that this is going to be the Super Bowl movie preview that everyone will be talking about. Furthermore, Marvel announced today that not only will The Avengers be released in 3D this May, but they’re also re-mastering the film for IMAX screens. So if you’re looking for a ridiculously immersive experience, check out your favorite superheroes in IMAX 3D.

Hit the jump for some of the highlights from the Twitter Q&A, and to check out the Super Bowl preview. The Avengers opens in IMAX 3D, 3D, and regular ol’ 2D on May 4th.

avengers-cobie-smulders-joss-whedon-samuel-l-jackson-set-photo-01When asked whether or not the film’s plot would be referencing any classic Avengers stories, Whedon replied thusly:

“It’s a combo platter: classic, Ultimate, plus a little ‘Richie Rich’ & ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking.’”

This is about how each question with Whedon went. A bit of truth sprinkled with a healthy serving of wit. The director also put to rest rumors that Spider-Man would be appearing in the film, saying “There is no Spider-Man cameo. But the Avengers do turn off the dark.” Another interesting tidbit, when asked if there were any characters he wanted to include that just didn’t fit the story, Whedon said he’s a fan of the Wasp. Presumably Marvel nixed that idea, as they most likely wanted to keep the film centered on characters we already know/have seen previously in awkwardly-placed cameos.

As for Jackson, he said that we’ll see interaction between Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders’ character all the time, but he cautioned it’s “sorta contentious.” He also affirmed that we won’t be seeing any Fury back story yet (hopefully that Nick Fury movie will come sooner rather than later).

Finally, Hiddleston talked a bit about how Loki has changed in The Avengers:

“More mischievous. More evil. More hubristic. More delusional. More damaged. More badass.”

As for what Loki’s looking for, Hiddleston said it’s not entirely about revenge but moreso identity. He said Loki is looking for “Belonging. Purpose. Self-esteem. Through delusional dreams.” Curiously, just before signing off Hiddleston tweeted the following: “By the way.. IN THE END, IT WILL BE EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF.” Hmm. You can catch up on all the tweets at the following Twitter accounts: @Avengers, @clarkgregg, @SamuelLJackson, and @twhiddleston.

Funny you should say Joss Whedon is no Christopher Nolan when it comes to havnig a cinematic eye. I think Nolan’s strength is in writing. His directorial style is nothing that spectacular (though Inception does have a few impressive visuals). Joss Whedon’s strength comes from writing as well, so if early viewers are saying that everything about the movie is great except the cinematic look, that’s still a thumbs up for Whedon since he’s credited as screenwriter.

Finally some promotional stuff besides those one sheets.

Having spiderman cameo in Avengers would be too awesome for anyone to handle and thus heads would explode shooting blood into the sky with atmospheric discolorations redding the blue out of the black! Such things are never expected, but greatly accepted. Bottom line is Marvel needs to start connecting their universe on film. Xmen vs Avengers would be as cool as Batman vs Superman or Conan vs Beastmaster!! That is all.

  • HULK

HULK looks Incredible! a 1000 times better than both previous Hulks. Finally this hulk looks true to the comics.

Way, way too short. Not enough Hulk.

    i hope this film delivers.

Where was the “fantastic look at the Hulk”..??? Looks like the same thing from the other trailer pretty much, except u saw him shredding clothes and then the yell in the other one. I want a slow mo action pan of him flying through the air about to come down with a double Hulk smash fists on some schlub with buildings falling and explosions behind him. Then i’d use the word fantastic look at him. That was a blurb of Hulk.

    • Liam_H

The CGI of the Hulk looks greatly rendered, which is what I consider fantastic.

      • Joe schmo

Well you’re saying the look OF the Hulk not look AT like the article said. The look of the Hulk has vastly improved. But as far as the article and tv spot goes there isn’t a good look AT the Hulk.

Judging by the trailer it does seem like its going to have a little bit of everything. Hulk looks good. Hopefully Ruffalo does a good job as Banner. At some point in the film i EXPECT him to lose control and everybody turns on him…

I think that in the end….the Hulk will ultimitely be the one that destroys all the villians, or saves the day. He is the most powerful mutant!!!!

I’m not worried about the heroes, but I’m definitely worried about the villains. The scene with all those cars blowing up that we’ve seen in the previous teaser is just … small alien spaceships? That’s the big threat that needs all five team members? I hope there’s more than we’re seeing here.

I can’t see how this is gonna be a good let alone great movie. Too many characters, it’s probably going to feel rushed to give everyone proper screen time and to set up the “crises” that brings them all together. It’ll have to be a 3 or 3 1/2 hour movie if not it’s gonna suck.

  • Ankush

Spidey would be cool, but Sony owns the movie rights to Spider-Man, and this is a Marvel Studios rtiducpoon, so no luck there. I agree with you though, I think this has the potential to be great, and I’m happy Joss is doing this. Thanks for the comments!
