As you may or may not know, Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly in Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future.  However, after five weeks of filming, Zemeckis decided to replace Stoltz with Michael J. Fox and Stoltz’ footage became the stuff of Hollywood lore.  While the upcoming Back to the Future Trilogy Blu-ray doesn’t offer an in-depth look at the scenes Stoltz did, there’s a new documentary that does take some time to explore what happened and why Zemeckis ultimately chose to reshoot five weeks worth of footage with a different actor.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy Blu-ray will be available to own on October 26th.  Click here for a full list of special features.

Exactly the same issue with Kurt Russell as “Han Solo” in Star Wars: strong performance, heavy gravitas, but too dramatic – which tends to cast a serious pall over the entire movie. The difference between Robert Zemeckis and George Lucas was that Mr. Lucas knew who Solo was before his first shot. That year, Eric Stoltz was the “it” boy around town with his portrayal of Rocky Dennis alongside Cher in Mask. Makes one wonder about the mood Misters Spielberg and Zemeckis were actually shooting for in their initial concept for Back to the Future. Maybe, just maybe, the studio execs didn’t believe a “straight” time-travel drama would tickle their target audiences’ wallets enough to see it twice.

Wow, I can tell even from that small amount of footage that this would have been a very different movie if they had stayed with Eric Stoltz. I don’t think it would have been a bad movie, just a different one.
