Warner Bros. has officially announced that the sequel to The Dark Knight (Batman 3) will be released on July 20, 2012 in both regular and IMAX theaters. This comes on the heels of this weeks earlier announcement that they’ve teamed up with IMAX for up to 20 additional films.
While there is no official word on what the film is about or even if director Christopher Nolan is going to helm the picture, I think it’s very safe to assume Nolan is back and he’ll start to talk about the movie when promoting Inception this summer.
More after the jump:
While everyone wondered what day WB would choose to release the next Batman installment, we should have guessed July 20. After all, The Dark Knight got released on July 18, 2008 and Nolan’s next film Inception gets released July 16. He clearly likes that 3rd week in July.
As of right now, the only high profile film getting released in July is Spider-Man and that’s hitting July 3, 2012. I think it’s very safe to assume every other movie studio is going to leave July 20th alone.
Other big movies in summer 2012 are The Avengers (May 4), Madagascar 3 (May 18), BattleshipBrave (May 25), Disney/Pixar’s Brave (June 15) and the Untitled Star Trek Sequel (June 29).
More as we hear it.

Why the heck is the studio pushing this thing…
I want to see another batman as much as the next guy, but Nolan IMO doesn't seem like he is ready to get going yet with it.
Let the dude breath and wait a few more years before you start it!
what an amazing summer for movies, the avengers, new star trek, new spider man (which could be really shit) and new batman. 2012 is the perfect year to release this, alot of people were thinking it would come out in 2011 which would have been way too soon. I cant wait for inception for 2 reasons; 1. because that will be a sick movie as well and 2. Nolan can finally start working on batman.
But does it seem to you that he doesn't want to work on batman yet?
thats more than 2 years away. That should give him plenty of time to shoot and edit. I'm just hoping they stop the dumb 3D trend.
He's not retarded, he's perfectly capable of multitasking. He was talking about Batman AND Superman during post for Inception. Besides, the film's probably still in the script stages.
Spider-Man reboot and the Avengers movie in one summer is too much
Too bad for 'em, 'cause Bats 3 is going to reign
..you know Nolan?
he's been working on it.. just not that much. you don't think his brother and the tattoo-guy have been working on ideas already..?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally I have conformation of a release date! its perfect timing. C. Nolan is awesome.
Nolan isn't an idiot. I'm sure he had a bunch of ideas before The Dark Knight even came out.
I think I just came.
that article doesn't mean crap to me until we know he is actually going to do it.
Droncz92 & Lt.Dan I am right with you.
How do you know Nolan isn't ready yet? did you ask him?
and 5 years in this day in age is an eternity between sequels, granted alot of sequels are shit because they put em out too quick these days but Nolan did 3 years between Batman Begins and Dark Knight.
Im sure he wouldn't agree to that date unless he was sure of himself. Have some Faith in the guy, he hasn't let us down yet.
i meant 4 years between sequels is a long time.
Agreed…
But what I guess I am more scared of is the Dark Knight was SO friggen awsome, how could he top it?
It seems too soon to try again.
GREAT news! I wonder what will be revealed while Nolan's promoting Inception, I expect very little
Nolan is being pressured to put another Batman movie out because this is their bread and butter. With Green Lantern coming out soon and then another Superman? And a possible Flash movie…..DC has to stay in the race against Marvel Movies because Marvel is eating them alive and only Batman can put them back in this comic book movie race. IRON MAN2, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, AVENGERS, SPIDER-MAN and WOLVERINE2…..Yikes.
TonyStark1: you do realize that Spiderman movies are sony, not marvel/disney… Spiderman doesnt count as a Marvel movie because marvel doesnt get any money they dont have the rights…
Also quality trumps quantity and Iron Man 2 is not meeting expectations Cap America looks like its going to be mediocre, thor might be good but there is no way an Avengers movie is going to work… same reason Iron Man 2 isnt as good as it should be, way too much crap slammed into one movie. DC is all about quality… atleast thus far they have been.
$$$$
in addition to spiderman being sony, x-men and wolverine in particular is 20th century fox. as is fantastic four. then punisher is lionsgate. if any of these studios stop making movies for these properties, the rights to them will revert back to disney/marvel…its why instead of letting spiderman die after raimi/maguire backed out, sony is now rebooting the entire thing. also why we're seeing a ridiculous amount of movies tied to the x-men universe being made/planned.
DC Comics is testing out another comic book property this summer with the release of Jonah Hex. should be pretty different from the stuff we've seen in most comic book movies the past several years
also why F4 is being completely rebooted. my guess is punisher will revert back to disney/marvel before anything else ever does…and lionsgate will let it happen since punisher isn't a big movie draw
On a side note: Spiderman was good the last three times. It ain't broke. Stop it.
I so don't wanna see Batman: The 3rd Dimension. Imagine how much that would suck?
Here's hoping the world doesn't end in July 2012:)
At first I thought Iron Man 2 would be as sweet as The Dark Knight but I was so shocked because it was even better… like it was more like the best sequel of all time Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. YES!!!

Nolan's a smart man. He probably got a sweet deal from the studio in terms of a gargantuan offer and probably agreements to finance many of his future projects (probably for the rest of his directing career). WB NEEDS a third Batman movie and likewise, Nolan needs the massive funding to do his movies justice. Nolan may have been arm-twisted into doing this 3rd movie sooner than he wanted, but at least we know he'll never half-ass a movie.
How can you say Captain America looks like its going to be mediocre when filming hasn't even started yet? I think you need to back the truck up old son.
Well if spider-man is being released the same month, I think Sony is about to learn a lesson in being loyal to your own franchise.
Hum, I find theirs to little going on in Marvel films. Their is alot going on in Christopher Nolan's Batman films, their is at least 3 villains per film.
So really… Marvel needs to do a better job including the crap from the comics and not trying to add in things that aren't in the comics. Not trying to pander to the ultimates or to recent storyline, but to the Stan Lee stories that MADE Marvel.
Nolan knows how to change things and still have them embodies the source perfectly.
Marvel just gets scarred and comes out with horrifically boring designs. I mean if the audience can handle the Iron Man being in his actual costume, they can surly handle the villain in his.
Consider Hulk, does that version of the abomination look better than the comic version? No. It's boring, it's forgettable, and it's not anymore “realistic” looking, so what's the bloody point. And since when was Whiplash popular enough to “earn' crimson Dynamos origin, huh?
dannyboy: It could be good, but Johnston is a mediocre director. I love Chris Evan's, but I do not think he seems like a good fit to be captain america. The little I have heard about the script ideas and stuff does not appear overly exciting. Finally it doesn't seem Marvel is putting as much into CA as they are with Thor and Iron Man. You are right it is too early to tell but that is why I said it LOOKS mediocre not that it will be. I am just not impressed with what has occurred so far.
nolan and his brother have already been working on the script. no bs..look it up. dude knows what he is doing.
whats wrong with 3d, 3D has nothing to do with a movie being bad, if the movie is bad it's going to be bad in 3d, if a movie is good, it's gonna be good in 3d.
sorry to disagree, but Avatar was mediocre in 2D and was awesome in IMAX 3D. story is the same, visuals are immensely different and CAN make the difference. and I also hope they do a 2D version. 3D is cool when it's done right, but I just don't see Batman flying off the screen, that would be cheesy

Because this whole 3D nonsense is a gimmick. Even the almighty Avatar which was supposed to be a prime example of how a 3D movie should be done, didn't really do much for me. If you require your movie to be in 3D in order to be a compelling experience you need to stop going to movies.
Spiderman was good the last three times? Come on now, the 3rd movie was absolute trash.
I hope its not as boring as The Dark Knight.
Title should be “The Caped Crusader”. Just sayin'.
you guy's are fucken losers, who gives a shit about batman or superman or spiderman or some other fucken kind of man. Superheros are for fags who call there mom to pick them up at the movie theaters. So go out and live in the real world instead of talking about a man who put's on a bat costumes.
Why the hell is everybody bashing the Spider-Man reboot?? We don't know what it is gonna be about so why are people complaining? For all we know Star Trek 2 could be total shit or even the Avengers.
The title should be “The Knight's End” and my top 3 villian choices would be Riddler, Black Mask, and Catwoman.
You're stupid.
Me too, that movie bored me a lot, I know Heath Ledger's performance was strong but the movie has no plot (did something happen there? it was super confusing)
Avatar was the most overhyped piece of rubbish I ever had the misfortune to walk out on, so making it 3D wouldnt save it. James Cameron has lost his touch unfortunately. But what do you expect from a Director who likes money so much he churns out sequels *ahem* Terminator *ahem*.
not to go off topic but just found out something that makes me sad about the avengers movie…Edward Norton said he's not gonna be playing the Hulk.
Dude, Cameron only made Terminator 2, which everybody knows was the pinnacle of the series. He wasn't involved in the shitty sequels that followed. Way to do your homework. FAIL.
I want the same Batman Car in the movie and the motorcycle. I want Mr. Freeze and the penquin as villains.
This whole new everything in 3D thing is severely overrated IMO.. Especially when the likes of Cineworld in UK have the cheek to charge an extra £1.50 a time even though I already pay £13.50 a month for my Unlimited card! WTF is that all about?
Both the Iron Man movies sucked IMO, Iron Man 2 in particular, I was so bored watching it I actually fell asleep.
