Rumor: Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Talks to Play The Riddler in BATMAN 3

This item will probably end up being filed under “crazy Batman 3 casting rumors” when all is said and done, but it’s reasonable and interesting enough to report.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt reportedly joked with director Christopher Nolan on the set of Inception that he’d love to read for the next Batman film.  The more they joked, the more they actually came to like the idea.  And now Hollywood Life reports that Levitt is “on the shortlist” to play The Riddler.

This makes a lot more sense than the rumor that pegged Eddie Murphy as The Riddler.  But David Goyer is still working on the script, and there are two summers between us and the announced July 20, 2012 release date, so we’re likely months away from any official casting notices.  Though I am rather fond of the idea… At the very least, you can enjoy the pair’s work in Inception when it hits theaters on July 16th.

  1. While I don't hate this idea, I think it's funny that all the rumors have been focussed around The Riddler. The script isn't done and we don't have the faintest idea of the plot, but everyone seems to think it'll be The Riddler.

  2. Meh, I don't see him as riddler. I was really let down by Jim Carrey, and until I see I wouldn't be excited for anything but someone who looks like the riddler. Their are other actors in the world, you don't have to use whoever is big, why not Leonardo Dicaprio? He looks like riddler? Johnny Depp? Jude Law? Bill Murray? Steve Bucemi? It are so many.

  3. That what I always thought! That if they wanted to bring the Joker back he would fit the bill. Now that the Joker has been cut out of the picture I'd still like to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt unitized a little more.

  4. I'd be ok with this. I think he'd make a good Riddler. But I'm still partial to the idea of David Tennant as the Riddler. He's who I've been lobbying for since people started saying who they wanted. I think he'd be perfect in the part.

  5. haha, or not. having a heath ledger look alike play the riddler when he doesn't even fit the character at all? this really needs more of a RDJ/Johnny Depp type actor, though different enough from jim carry to make him stand apart

  6. Philip S. Hoffman for Penguin and Peter Skarsgard (sp?) for Riddler. That is the combination I'd like to see.

  7. To keep with the atmosphere of the Nolan Batmans, I'd say the best villains would be Black Mask and the Penguin. Black Mask can be a good physical opponent while Penguin could be a behind-the-scenes enemy, perhaps a politician. I liked the gun-runner rumors that flew around before “The Dark Knight” was settled, so maybe Goyer and crew can stick with that idea.

  8. Its stupid to say that just because the script isn't done it's too soon. Whether the script is done or not, Noland and Co. know who the Villains will be in the next film, and it isn't too soon to start talking to people and getting schedules coordinated.

  9. Levitt looks toooo much like Heath Ledger to play anyone else but Joker, even in a pre-Joker flashback.

RIDDLER should be left for CRISPIN GLOVER who already looks like Riddler should.

  10. Would love to see him in the next Batman movie.

He has done brilliant work and think he will fit in nicely with the Nolan universe.

as the riddler, im not so sure, people will be too busy drawing comparisons to how similar looking Heath and Joseph are and how similar the Joker and the Riddler.

For batman 3 to stand on its own as a movie it needs to move away from the elements present in the dark night or batman begins.

  11. Im having a feeling that if indeed the riddler is the villain in the next batman, that he will be a much more different take than what we are used to. After seeing what Nolan did with Dark Knight I am sold on just about every idea he comes up with.

All I know is that I love the films Gordon-Levitt has been doing lately and I love everything Nolan has done as well.

As with The Dark Knight, I'll reserve judgement until I see it. It worked in that case.

  13. Don't care who or what it is, I trust nolan will make a good movie.

I do really enjoy Joseph Gordon-Levitt, kid can act, he's got what it takes. He needs that one big role to push him on top, and he will get there I think.

  14. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is extremely talented, one of the best young actors today. I'd love to see him be the Riddler. I never thought Heath Ledger would turn out to be a fantastic Joker, so give him a chance. And Leonardo DiCaprio or Steve Buscemi as the Riddler? Umm, yea sure. The best idea I've heard so far is Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin. I think that would be amazing. But I'm sure they will decide on a great villain and an even greater actor to portray him. Let's just hope that it's not Mr. Freeze.

  15. a darker take on the Riddler played by Bill The Butcher himself, Daniel Day Lewis….thats my choice….

  16. No. thats not perfect casting.
“helluva” actors get nominations and awards. JGL is the kid from 3rd rock from the sun.
JGL is a little boy standing next to batman. he wont match up physically.
thats not the actor you want to the lofty task of following ledger.

  17. If you can set up the FB/Twitter campaign I'd certainly join it! CRISPIN GLOVER is perfect for any number of roles in the Batman universe (including Joker in an alternate take)
But he just looks like RIDDLER. Even in the comic pic above, that looks like it was based off Glover.

  18. What's up with the bloody Penguin enthusiasm?

The fat bloke is just horrendous to be a main villain in a movie with the caliber of Nolan.

Keep the fat bastard in the comics and bring in the likes of Hideto Katsu, Bane, Killer Croc, Man-Bat, Metallo, Mirror Master, Number One, Rupert Thorne, Solomon Grundy, Spellbinder, Terrible Trio, Toymaker, and the bloody Riddler.

Harley Quinn would be cool too but not a fat deformed penguin bastard!

  19. Much Respect Albinolevne.
IMHO,Edward Norton would be crap!!!!! He is a temperamental little boy on the set. Remember his version of the Hulk? Little baby was so pissy over creative control he never did interviews for the movie. ALL THAT MONEY SPENT.
OH NO HE DIDN'T(snapoing my finger and snaking my neck!). LOL!
Man! Batman 3 ain't no joke! The studios, IMHO, aren't going to take crap with so much on the line.
Jude Law? He's too introspective. We need someone that will leave exit wounds in our psyche as opposed to feeling like we need to skip in slow motion through the dandelions on a crisp Fall morning.
Lohn Leguizamo would kill that role. Remember him as the sadistic clown in Spawn? He's and ad-libbing genius. Bulk John up and let him rip. Now there is a candidate for the Riddler!

    • Fuck. I didn’t mean to like that… Anyhow… BULK him up?
No. The Riddler isn’t a beefy character, much like The Joker. He’s known more for his plots, intelligence, and such not. John Leguizamo would make a great Riddler, but he doesn’t LOOK the part. Ed Norton looks more the role and he COULD do it (have you seen Fight Club, Death to Smoochie, or The 25th Hour?). He’s a big fan of The Hulk series, which is why he was such a baby about all that.

However, I don’t know who I’d like to see as The Riddler. I don’t even think he’ll be the villain.

  20. If JGL is “the kid from 3rd rock,” then Heath Ledger was “the kid from Roar.” Try watching a few films he made as an adult, and you'll see he's more than a “child actor” or “sit-com actor,” or whatever label you fancy.

And please, don't give me that awards bullshit. Awards are mostly industry ego-stroking. They have very little to do with actual talent.

  21. people saying that jgl is not threatening enough are considering his role in 500 days of summer…..go rent manic or stream it on netflix …he is intense as hell in that picture….played the gritty noir role in brick perfectly also…but check out manic!
