BATMAN 3 to Be Titled THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Won’t Be in 3D; The Riddler Won’t Be the Villain

After the vague/obvious news that the third Batman movie was looking for a female lead, would you like some real news about the Caped Crusader’s next big screen adventure?  How about three pieces of real news?  Director Christopher Nolan has spilled some revelations to Hero Complex about the upcoming film.  First up, the next Batman movie will be titled The Dark Knight Rises.  Personally, I think that’s a fine title, although I know I’ll have to catch myself from writing The Dark Knight Returns (which is the title of Frank Miller’s classic Batman tale)  It also hints that the third movie will have some kind of redemption for Bats after (spoiler alert) falling from grace in the eyes of Gotham at the end of the second movie.

Hit the jump for more on The Dark Knight Rises.

Nolan also tells Hero Complex that The Riddler will not be the villain in the third film.  When Nolan eliminated Mr. Freeze from the running, it wasn’t a big surprise, but The Riddler is a character who seemed to fit fairly well into Nolan’s reality-based Gotham.  There have been reports that Killer Croc may be the villain, but that rumor came from Mark “in-no-way-trustworthy” Millar.  But speaking of rumors, it now looks like we can put down the one about Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing The Riddler.  As we previously reported, Tom Hardy has joined the cast, but it’s in an unspecified role.  Given Hardy’s versatility, it’s tough to peg him as any single character from the comics.

Finally, Nolan confirms what we already suspected: the film won’t be in 3D.  Cinematographer Wally Pfister shares Nolan’s lack of enthusiasm for the technology.  However, they’re both fans of IMAX and will “…instead use high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path…”  Nolan filmed the intro of the Dark Knight in IMAX.  Does this mean he’s going to film all of The Dark Knight Rises with IMAX cameras?  The cameras are known for being loud and unwieldy, but perhaps the technology has come far enough that he can get them to do what he needs.

The Dark Knight Rises is slated to hit theaters on July 20, 2012.

Stupid title. And no Riddler? Double fail.

    I’ll pass.

    • Nalindra Ferdinando

balck mask would be an excellent villian, and remember its nolan and he is yet to fail us in a film.I’l wait and see and I won’t be trusting these names that pop up,after all TDK was filmed under a different name as well.

    • Bill

that because Nolan is infamous for making bad movies

      • http://twitter.com/grapenutsrbt Jim Goff

        Seriously? You’re serious? Wtf.

      • Djet17

putting aside the batman franchise.. Insomnia, Memento, The Prestige, Inception. If you thin these are bad movies you have seriously bad taste friendo

      • http://twitter.com/grapenutsrbt Jim Goff

        Indeed.

    • Anonymous

By all means. Pass on what no doubt will be an amazing movie.

      • loudwhisper

Amazing? The first two were awful. These Hollywood money hoarders are an embarrassment to film making.

Sigh, at least we have Star Trek 2 and The Hobbit to look forward to in 2012.

      • Anonymous

Yeah. The first two were awful. You’re right. What were they thinking??
Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Besides if you really think they were awful then don’t watch the third one. But we all know you will.

      • Anonymous

Right, because Abrahm’s Star Trek was such an amazingly thoughtful, character driven piece that just flew in under the radar. What was the name of the indie film house that put that one together again?

      • loudwhisper

J.J. Abrams Star Trek > The batman movies

      • Christopher_killen

Star Trek 2 and The Hobbit = well over $700million budget combined and you want to talk money hoarders?

      • loudwhisper

Actually, The Hobbit alone is budgeted at $670 million. Star Trek 2 has yet to have an official budget.

      • Maccam89

hahahaha. The Dark Knight was awful!?! Batman Begins was awful!?!? Let me guess. You’re a Uwe Boll fan?

      • Staticfizz

        You sir, are a nerd.

yeah i’m sure you won’t see it. bullshit. riddler is lame as shit. there’s absolutely no physical threat.

    • Anonymous

Seriously? You’re a Riddler fan? I’ve been reading Batman comics since Knightfall and can count the number of good Riddler stories on one hand.

      • Nam Erewhon

I have no horse in this race, but I really had to say that I’m surprised no one is responding to the comment “I’ve been reading Batman since Knightfall.” Seriously? That’s the era you’re using to establish your cred as a judge of good Batman stories?

    • Wanker

      No you wont.

  • guesty

Title’s okay, they gotta work “The Dark Knight” in there somewhere considering its ginormous success.

  • Jonhammnegge

The title is meh. Why not just The Dark Knight Returns? Waay catchier.

    • Kroz

I was hoping more for “Gotham” as the title

    • Wanker

ist already the name of a one of the Batman stories….cant use it again

I was talking to IMAX’s John Schreiner at a press screening of Hubble 3D last month, and he said that they are working on a new digital IMAX 3D camera which should be all tested and ready by spring next year. I guess going digital also means it will be a lot quieter. I know that Chris Nolan and Wally Pfister are quite conservative but I’m still hoping they’ll give it a try at least.

    • Sam

      Christopher Nolan won’t shoot digital.

  • Mike91

Already the first surprise of, what I hope, will be many to do with this final Batman film from Nolan – I really thought they were going to go with “Gotham City”. I can trust Nolan to remain grounded despite such huge interest in the film, and stick close to his previous films. And with Jonathan Nolan writing as well, it’s guaranteed to be a CLEVER narrative, rather than just full of “cool, trippy” stuff like Inception. The Dark Knight in IMAX was one of the greatest cinematic experience I’ve ever had, and if they shoot all of TDKR in IMAX, it could top it! Can’t wait for 2012!

    • loudwhisper

Obviously you’ve never seen Avatar in IMAX 3D.

Greatest cinematic experience ever. Hands down.

      • Smurfhater

LOL Right. Dances with Wolves IN SPACE was just so damn epic.

      • FincherFan

You know what, I am so sick and tired of people bashing a movie that others may actually really like. I don’t know about you, but I certainly go to the movies to escape and become engrossed in a scenario, and Avatar did exactly that for me. In my OPINION, it is a terrific and amazing film that transported you to a fantasy world, the likes of which we have not seen since The Lord of the Rings. So please just allow people to like the movies they want to like and we’ll allow you to do the same.

By the way, Avatar was “so damn epic”, considering the fact that it had an ending battle in the skies with futuristic military helicopters and alien dragons.

      • Maccam89

It was an incredible movie visually and did amazing things with the new technology. It was immersive in a way that is unmatched. It gets bashed because the script was uninspired, contained terrible dialouge and had a by the numbers story that could be written a 16 year old. Unfortunately a lot of people hate on it for it’s popularity but the reality is that there are film fans who really do expect a “great cinematic experience” to involve great writing and an original story. I see your point though. It had its epic moments.

AVATAR is the greatest cinematic experience ever. Hands down??????????

Did you just start watching movies last year??

      • loudwhisper

Lol, good implying, bro. I’ve been watching movies since before you were born.

James Cameron’s Avatar > Christopher Nolan’s Batman Films

Avatar is easily the greatest cinematic masterpiece ever to be created. The only film that could top such an achievement would be none other than the next Avatar.

      • Anonymous

Let me guess, you didn’t mind the weak story because sometimes you just like to turn your brain off and look at the pretty colors.
To be honest I don’t even know what pretty colors everyone refers to. The 3D made that movie dark as hell.

      • Brettbrettbinks

I’ve created better cinematic experiences in my stool. James Cameron’s “Dances with Pocahontas” was over hyped crap. BTW, I just created the Avatar sequel, I promise not to flush it if you want to have a look.

      • Chuck Finley2

You keep talking about how this movie is going to be crap but I find it interesting that you can’t leave the page. It seems as though you are interested in it but you just want somebody to argue with.

      • VocabDoctor

Unfortunately, Avatar was just a glorified theme park ride. Welcome to Pandora, marvel at the alien ecology and wildlife! Period. The action was competently shot, as is always the case, the 3D was well implemented and immersive, the effects we’re great, beyond that it was entirely mediocre and forgettable Avatar has no staying power whatsoever, unlike other Cameron films, it will not endure.

I love the title. You can’t call it THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. They’ve already used BATMAN RETURNS and SUPERMAN RETURNS.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for sooooo long for this awesome news!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T FRIGGIN’ WAIT FOR JULY 20, 2012!!!!!!! I’ll be the first in line to get my advance ticket!!!!!! And I knew The Riddler wouldn’t be the villain. I just didn’t see Nolan picking him. I think he woul…d have been cool to see, and it would have been really great to see Johnny Depp play him. But I didn’t think he’d be used. I don’t know who will be the villain. I would really love to see Killer Croc, personally. I know many others would, too. And I love the title!! It’s very epic and symbolic!!! And that’s alright, its not in 3D. That would have been cool to see, but Nolan really isn’t big on it. It’s all good, though. I’m just wicked happy to see this news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully that’s just a working title because it sucks.

Seeing as how they base this version on a more reality based level and there is always focus on the crime in the city, I can see Tom Hardy as Black Mask being the villain. Joker killed a few bosses, and Dent killed Maroni…. it’s a good lead in for Black Mask to rise and become boss of bosses in Gotham.

  • InfiniteMonkey

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

    COOOKIES ALL AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

If this title is implying more Nolan Batman films after this one, then it’s brilliant, if not, and it is to be the last Nolan/ Batman film, then it is a melancholy title indeed.

Hopefully its Bane and Talia al Ghul. Something to tie it to Batman Begins. If its the end of a trilogy then it should tie back into the original film’s villains. League of Shadows could be revealed to have been the real bad guys all along. Toss in the Black Hand for a “mini” boss like Scarecrow was in Batman Begins.

  • http://www.buzzabit.com/aaron Aaron Sullivan

This is one of the more bizarre comment threads I’ve seen on Collider. Seems there is a readership of disparate individuals. Hope everyone here realizes that movies are a subjective experience and your own experience often has little to no bearing on the experience of others. Not only that but an individual can shape a large part of their own experience watching a movie. That’s why haters miss out on a great deal of enjoyment they could be having. Also, children usually don’t understand or appreciate adult subjects and themes even if they like adult content. *steps off of soapbox*Riddler has always struck me as too simple for movies. Here’s a riddle. Solve it. Here’s another riddle. Solve it. For me, that generally makes for boring cinema. However, I’m sure the Nolans could have produced some inventive take on the whole thing.Dark Knight RisingI like it. Risen might be too conclusive even for an end to the trilogy. Returns harkens back to Batman Returns and you don’t want to draw comparisons to the original trilogy (especially the sequels).

Bring in Azreal to compete with Bats and all with be right with the world
Oh and the dynamic Ventriloquist, thatd be great too

It seems to me that the Riddler was already done in Joker
Nolan made two villains in one, kinda…

I don’t dig the title but Hardy playing Hush would be sweeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Not surprising. I’ll be EXTREMELY shocked is Catwoman or the Penguine come anywhere near this movie. I’m sticking with Black Mask.

Can we stop arguing about which nerdy movies we like more? Both Avatar and The Dark Knight were great movies that were extremely entertaining. Get over it! If you want to see a fairly modern movie that is a true masterpiece, see CHILDREN OF MEN. If you haven’t seen it, see it…. That is my gift to you.
