I adore Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City is a pretty good follow-up, but those were both developed by Rocksteady.  The franchise has now moved into the hands of WB Games Montreal, so there’s some uncertainty.  Furthermore, longtime Batman voice Kevin Conroy was replaced Roger Craig Smith with Troy Baker voicing The Joker instead of Mark Hamill.  Last week, we saw Batman fighting Deathstroke in a non-gameplay trailer for the prequel, Batman: Arkham Origins.  The game takes place in an even larger open world Gotham in which eight of the world’s deadliest assassins gather on Christmas Eve under direct orders from Black Mask to kill Batman.  A full trailer has now been released, and while it still doesn’t show any gameplay, it does show off a neat fight scene in addition to Batman villains Black Mask and presumably Deadshot.  WB Games has also announced that those who pre-order will be able to play as Deathstroke.  According to WB Games, “Deathstroke will come complete with his own unique weapons and special moves, and will be playable in all challenge maps in the game, as well as two additional challenge maps that will be included with the pack.  The pack will also contain two alternate Deathstroke character skins.”

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and images.  Batman: Arkham Origins will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, WiiU, and PC on October 25th.  Click here to go pre-order.

the animation looks amazing they should do movies like this

That’s what I was thinking the entire time. It feels like just yesterday we had cutscenes with CGI characters who moved stiffly and unnaturally with arms like wet noodles, but this was incredible.

it certainly looks promising, but i really don’t understand why rocksteady and paul dini weren’t behind this. i mean, Arkham City is a GREAT game. sold lots of copies and won a bunch of awards. so why not bring back that creative team? i’ll be cautiously optimistic until reviews come in

    • yeah

Hopefully they are working on a next-gen title? Can’t leave Rocksteady/Paul idle.

    Beautiful

Still a better fight scene than anything in the Nolan trilogy…

    • uh huh

      You can say that again.

Right, because animation is very comparable to choreographed movie fight scenes?

      • Lex Walker

It is…someone still storyboards the scene and has to choreograph it for the animators.

You’ve obviously never shot a fight scene or action sequence with camera’s. There’s no comparison to animation CG sequences to choreographed scenes shot on camera. If you think it’s comparable then you have no clue what you’re talking about.

      • Lex Walker

Just asserting the other person doesn’t know what they’re talking about isn’t enough to win you an argument, unfortunately for you. The actual filming process of live-action and CGI might be different, but in any scenario where the CG artist isn’t his own director he’s working off the instructions, storyboards, and models that dictate how characters move through the frame, at what speed. Just like with live-action fight choreographers and cinematographers take their cues to best meet the vision of the Director for a given scene. The camera angle can be played around with at any time, but the mechanics of planning it out and choreography remain the same. So yes, there’s a very obvious and easy comparison.

I completed Arkham Asylum a while ago, and just started playing Arkham City this past weekend. Best comic book series video game out there. Looking forward to Arkham Origins and hope the can duplicate the success the Rocksteady had with the previous two titles.

More amazing non-gameplay footage. Nimble footwork in the hand to hand combat…

But this is not a dance. We’ll see if Montreal can really deliver once they show us actual gameplay footage. If they don’t show it to us, you can’t take that as an ominous sign that they’re not proud of what they have.

Nice! Give these guys the money to make a full-length feature (perhaps with multiple plot-lines and an interactive interface) and I might be able to start liking Batman again.

Conroy is returning. A simple Google search revealed this. Great reporting as always, Collider.
