BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE – Jason Momoa to Play Aquaman, with Major Role in JUSTICE LEAGUE [Updated]

While the LA Kings were establishing their rule over the ice last night, Jason Momoa was staking his claim as king of the seas.  A confident new report pegs the former Game of Thrones star as playing Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with a larger role likely in the superhero team-up movie, Justice League.  It sounds like Snyder’s design for the character is already set, so even though we haven’t heard any official confirmation yet, Momoa is expected to play the part.  There’s also a hint of some plot elements for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that would be in direct response to the destructive events that took place in Man of Steel.  Hit the jump for more.

[Update: THR has corroborated HitFix's report, citing their own sources as saying Momoa will indeed be playing Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  We'll let you know when we get official word from Warner Bros.]

HitFix assertively jason-momoa-batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justicereports that Momoa will be playing Aquaman (though not necessarily by that exact name) in Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  The write-up also delves into the presumed plot of the film, which is thought to have Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) turning the populace of Metropolis against the last son of Krypton because of the widespread destruction he inadvertently caused.  In addition to the land-dwelling folks not being too happy with Superman, it’s proposed that Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, is equally displeased with the havoc caused by Zod’s World Engine poised over the Indian Ocean.  That being said, Aquaman (and Momoa) is expected to have a smaller role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which sets him up for a bigger part in Justice League.

I’ll still take this news with a grain of salt since Momoa’s been rumored for everything from the villainous Doomsday to the heroic Martian Manhunter.  While it certainly looks like he’ll be appearing in Snyder’s film, we’ll have to wait for more official confirmation before we bestow the crown of the sea king upon him.  If it’s true, we’ll likely be seeing a lot more of him due to WB’s ambitious, yet unconfirmed, movie schedule.  Let us know your thoughts about Momoa playing Aquaman in the comments below.

Lots of rumoured cameos. I do like the idea about superman facing the consequences of the zod invasion

    • Merlin235

      Me too.

      • Horndog

Alien invasions were played out long before Avengers

      • MatthewM

Who else are they going to go to war against? Puny humans? I think not!

    • Django9000

The idea only reinforces the theory that this will be a Legal Thriller, putting Supes on trial for crimes against humanity.
Which in a well thought out script would make this MoS’ s Empire Strikes Back, I.e. everything gets unfortunate & dark.

Except that the entire first film was unfortunate & dark so, in theory they’d have to flip the formula around a bit to make that work…

If Lex somehow brings the Justice League together by pitting them against Superman, then, that could be cool.

But if he does it using Facebook to socially network them, then … Epic Fail.

      • thinker365

I like this theory of Lex initially starting the Justice League, maybe with Bruce Wayne and/or Batman’s help. Then when Lex’s real intentions are discovered along with Superman’s good intentions, the League members (led by Batman) flip the script on Luthor and team up to whoop his ass, but not before he’s gotten some of their DNA and made his own league of baddies (Doomsday? Bizarro?).

      • Al

But that would make Batman dumb.

      • Amanda

just have batman show up as bruce wayne and hint at him being around without showing him for the first half. then suddenly he shows up and reveals luthors the baddie

    • sunshine

i called that when my wife and i walked out of the movie. i think my quote was “bruce is gonna be pissed”

  • lobtaylor

I can so see him as Aquaman….he was never Conan. Infact with a great script he could make the role his.

    • Ruprect

No, he was Conan. The problem was Marcus Nispel is no John Milius.

      • lord jim

john milius said he couldn´t have done the movie without schwarzenegger.they really should team up for king conan.

      • Ruprect

Yah, I had heard Mr Milius’ quote about the reboot. My point is that the fault in the 2011 movie was the direction, not in Mr Momao’s portrayal.
I would love to see King Conan written/directed by Milius and starring Arnie with Momao or The Rock playing his son, Conn.

  • DUDEWITHAGUN

I really hope all this rumor of superman facing the consequences of the man of steel destruction is true, because it will automatically make man of steel better (believe it or not, this is not a sarcastic dig at MOS, just something that when thinking makes sense to me) AND it will make a lot of detractors of MOS see the film in a new light.

    • Merlin235

While I agree it will make MOS more acceptable, it won’t make it better in my opinion. Dealing with the aftermath of destroying one of the world’s greatest cities is just the rational thing for them to do at this point. Ignoring it in future movies would have only cheapened MOS empowered the MOS detractors (of which I am one).

      • M&M

I gotta be honest – I wasn’t a big fan of Batman Begins but The Dark Knight made the first film better for me. Could happen.

      • SamBerns

I would say Batman begins is possibly better than DK. “It’s not who you are underneath”

      • milo

I agree, the first isn’t perfect but I like it the best of the trilogy. I feel like the Joker stuff is so strong that it helps along a movie that isn’t otherwise as strong as the first.

    • GrimReaper07

As someone who hated MOS, the fact that he accidentally wrecked Metropolis and killed Zod don’t matter to me. It’s the filmmaking itself where the movie’s biggest problems lie.

      • Mr. White

Except Superman doesn’t wreck Metropolis. It’s the Kryptonians, led by Zod … and the World Engine. They were attemption to exterminate humanity. Zod went all Hitler on humanity.

This myth that it was Superman’s fault needs to stop. There was damage in Superman II as well, people didn’t blame it on him. Damage in Avengers, people aren’t up in arms over that. In Winter Soldier, Captain America gave orders to have 3x huge aircraft carriers shot down. Surely there was innocents on board those large vessels. That was directly causing deaths.

Superman didn’t do that in Man of Steel. He saved the world. Do I have to feel sorry in DC films the villain is an actual threat? In Man of Steel he saves the planet, and we’re up in arms about the fact a chunk of Metropolis gets damaged? You guys nit pick stuff to death.

      • The Flobbit

I don’t give a shit who’s fault it is, or if it could have been avoided or not.

It was just bad cinema: grautitous, immature, ugly, and poorly written, plain and simple. THAT is the problem, and THAT is why we harp on Man of Steel: it was terribly, terribly written.

      • GrimReaper07

Terribly written and directed. I’m not giving Snyder a pass.

      • http://twilightirruption.blogspot.com/ abbeysbooks

I’ve read your comments before following you. I think you would like darren in Dublin at them0vieblog on blockbusters as he is very good on them and seems to have your opinion on Man of Steel Link: http://them0vieblog.com/2011/07/28/alien-nation-what-the-aborted-superman-returns-opening-sequence-tells-us-about-bryan-singers-man-of-steel/

      • The Flobbit

        Cool. I’ll check him out.

  • JC

Glad that you brought the deskopt version back to mobile users!

    • gar216

I loved the mobile version. The desktop has to be read in landscape. Just annoying. My phone is 5″.

      • JC

Why do you have to read it in landscape? You can view it either way

      • gar216

Portrait requires side scrolling, or font that is way to small to read.

    • MITIOR

I agree, feels more natural. Keep it like this!

  • gar216

Really like this casting. Give him some frosted tips and he is the king of Atlantis.

  • Person

This movie has pretty much completely turned into a game of “Spot the DC superhero.”

    • Agent777

Unlike a Marvel film, we’ll be able to guess who the superheros actually are.

      • Aquartertoseven

Just because they’re known, doesn’t mean they’ll be good in the film. After all, look at how MoS turned out. Is ‘disaster’ too much or not far enough?

      • MITIOR

To answer your question, “Disaster”is too much, almost fan level hyperbolic.

      • Aquartertoseven

It kind of was a disaster though, flat and lifeless. A real misfire, especially as one that was supposed to set up DC’s universe in film.

      • Person

It was easily one of the better superhero films in the last few years, and probably the best since The Dark Knight. So “disaster” is way too far haha

      • Aquartertoseven

To this day I still forget that children have access to the internet too; I generally assume that adults comment on sites like these. You’re just tragic, Person, if you believe a word that you typed. It had no character development, arguably the worst, most nonsensical story in a superhero film in the last 10 years, flat acting, bland direction, it was tragic. No wonder you like it lol. Action does not a film make, and a mature adult has enough sense to realise that. Clearly you’re not.

      • Person

Yeah I must not be an adult because I have an opinion that differs from yours. Thank you for teaching me what maturity is, faceless Collider commenter, I will carry this lesson with me for the rest of my life.

      • Aquartertoseven

You’re not an adult because an adult knows that substance>style, and as MoS has only style to offer, that’s the only logical reason for you to like it.

      • Person

There was plenty of substance, and plenty of style. It wasn’t Shakespeare, but it was more than enough for a summer superhero movie. It’s like every superhero movie has to be The Dark Knight or it has no substance, or it has to be a Marvel movie otherwise it’s not fun.

      • Aquartertoseven

        Recluse becomes public.
        General invades and fails.

        Real deep, you’re right.

      • The Flobbit

Ouch. If you actually believe that, you are beyond all help. Man of Steel was a disaster on almost every level. It was a poorly written, lifeless, poorly filmed, gratuitous, illogical, humorless, joyless mess.

      • milo

So you’re saying better than all the marvel movies except Iron Man, First Class, The Wolverine, and Days of Future Past (I’m intentionally leaving out Origins: Wolverine and the two Spidey movies).

I guess I disagree in a pretty big way.

      • Person

Iron Man was technically before The Dark Knight, if only by a couple months. But yeah, I’d put MoS above just about every X-Men movie except X2, and certainly the last two Spidey disasters. (I did really like FC and Wolverine though).

      • http://twilightirruption.blogspot.com/ abbeysbooks

No one IMO comes close to Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Especially the last 2. Sublime.

    • sunshine

do you have any clue how many characters are showing up in avengers 2?

      • milo

        And…?

In the case of Avengers, the vast majority have already appeared in at least two or three other movies. I’m skeptical about trying to introduce virtually all the characters in one movie, pretty much only Superman has been seen already in this incarnation, right?

  • Royale With Cheese

They need someone badass to play Aquaman in order to make him really come to life with some energy and an intimidation factor so I’m not surprised that Khal Drogo is going to be the man for the job, excellent casting.

  • Mezmero

I would rather have Momoa play him than Damon.

    • The Flobbit

I would rather have Zach Galifianakis play Aquaman than Damon.

      • SamBerns

I would pay a kickstarter for this.

  • Horndog

Someone needs to tell Goyer/Snyder what a horrible title Dawn of Justice is. Batman Vs. Superman could’ve worked so nicely…shame

    • Ruprect

I think you mean the Warner Brothers marketing department should be told.

    • Bob

Imho, shoulda just been “Dawn of Justice” with the Bat Sup nonsense name with all these characters in this. Bats, Sups, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg with Flash and Aquaman both rumored.

      • Bob

Meant without* the Bats Sups nonsense name.

      • bidi

well i’m assuming the Batman/Superman part is kept because they’ll actually be main characters, while the others are basically cameos. just a thought

  • Horndog

Someone needs to tell Goyer/Snyder what a horrible title Dawn of Justice is. Batman Vs. Superman could’ve worked so nicely…shame

  • Karkaju

Jason Momoa is awesome and I’ll welcome any hero or villain they set him to play, but I can’t help but feel it’s a missed opportunity for him not to play Lobo. As far as
superhero movies go, It’s the one that still needs to be done and the role he was born to play, IMO.

  • Cog

    Finally a good casting call.

  • YodaRocks

I don’t remember Superman being shorter than Batman and Aquaman.
Jason Momoa and ben Affleck are both 6′ 4″ and Henry Cavill is 6′ 1″.
I hope they use effects to make Superman taller than Aquaman at least, but then why hire Jason Momoa? He isn’t known for his acting chops.

    • The Flobbit

No, he’s known for his OTHER chops. Like the ones he can inflict with his 6’4, mega-ripped frame.

    • Daniel O’Reilly

He was a great Khal Drogo. Though granted, the writing for Game of Thrones is stronger than I would anticipate BvS’s to be.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Also, Khal Drogo had a very limited role in that single season he appeared in. Momoa did well, but he didn’t have much to do.

      • sunshine

i’m pretty sure affleck and his buddy that he did argo with rewrote the script. i’d call that very strong.

      • Daniel O’Reilly

Affleck doesn’t have a writing credit on it as of yet, but you’re right that Christ Terrio did a rewrite (or maybe just a polish, the reports were unclear) on David Goyer’s screenplay. The story is still credited to Goyer and Zack Snyder, neither of whom have written anything decent in a while (in the case of Snyder, ever).

      • bidi

the official press release says it was written by Terrio, based on a script by Goyer. so it sounds like Terrio did more than a polish, if Goyer isn’t even getting script credit anymore

      • Daniel O’Reilly

That sounds a little more promising. I really do hope it turns out to be good.

  • Michael Morelock

I’ll see the movie regardless, but the choice of actors concern me. Affleck is really going to have to pull off some great acting to fit the role of Batman. Gal Gadot was,is and always will be a bad choice for Wonder Woman. Jason Momoa does not wow me either as an actor. He may be okay, but if they want to compete with Avengers they better be better than okay. Script better be great or it won’t matter who is playing the parts.

    • Bob

Wow, you havent even seen her as WW. I love her in the FF franchise so I for one think she is beatiful for the role, and has been working out to physically fit the role.

      • Michael Morelock

I seen her skinny butt in Fast and the Furious. She will have to do more than just workout. She’ll need to put on some weight, not just look muscular. Wonder Woman should have curves, something Gal Gadot does not possess and simply working out won’t remedy that fact.

      • The Flobbit

As you have not seen the film and her performance, I would argue that you refrain on passing final judgement. Secondly, her appearance has much less to do with it than you think. Hugh Jackman is a 6’2, lanky Aussie who played a 5’5 stocky Wolverine, so Gal Gadot bulking up really shouldn’t be a problem. I think Gal Gadot will do fine.+

      • t

Gadot will suck balls. She is such a terrible choice that that’s probably how she got the role in the first place.

      • Michael Morelock

It is one thing to put on some muscle, but another to add curves. Her face does not strike me as looking anything like Wonder Woman. I’ve liked her in other films, but she just doesn’t fit the role. I’ll watch her in the new Superman movie, but a Wonder Woman stand alone film I have no interest in seeing.

  • The Flobbit

Please, please, please get Jason Momoa as Aquaman. He’s got the size, he’s got the looks, and he is a badass dude.

    • YodaRocks

      But can he act?

      • The Flobbit

He is an actor: he gets paid to portray characters onscreen. So yeah, he can act. But can he act WELL? Reasonably – as much as the character needs.

      • The Flobbit

He is an actor: he gets paid to portray characters onscreen. So yeah, he can act. But can he act WELL? Reasonably – as much as the character needs.

      • MJ

So far he nailed playing an “angry warrior” of Game of Thrones, and was just horrid trying to play Conan in the reboot. I don’t think the guy has much going for him, acting wise. He can play “angry bodybuilder” pretty well, probably because that is who he is given the obvious roids he has been taking for years.

  • DEADP00L

This actor line up is farcical! All that’s missing is David Haselhoff as the Flash and Hayden Christensen as Green Lantern. Oh mercy I think I just gave them ideas…

    • MJ

      LOL — Exactly!

You forgot to mention Michael Ironsides and George Kennedy.

      • lord jim

michael ironside is a great actor and would have been a great lex luthor, and george kennedy is a legend so what are you talking about?snyder would be glad if he had actors of such calibre which sadly isn´t the case.

      • MJ

        LOL ^ 2

Shelley Winters as well then — just for you, my friend!

    • Jonboy

David Haselhoff would be a great choice for Aquaman. He has plenty of experience with water and nobody takes him seriously. Man! I really hope they are just introducing these characters in cameos and not with huge roles. Trying to watch Batman and Superman together with the bold cast of Eisenberg and Affleck shouldn’t need distractions. Plus other than Superman they just go ahead and pick the exact opposite choices to play their superheros…Batman is old, Lex Luthor is young…Wonder Woman is skinny, and now Aquaman is a hulking immovable object that looks like he might sink faster than swim.

  • mattinacan

i love how after MOS was lambasted by critics and fans alike, Snyder is pretending like the destruction porn in the first movie was all part of his plan for the sequel, riiiiight.

    • Daniel O’Reilly

Sure it was. That’s why the people of Metropolis are building a statue in honor of the alien who destroyed their city.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Like you do. I mean that’s why we built a statue to lady liberty after she destroyed the east coast in her 1875 rampage.

  • MatthewM

Everything about this movie sounds awful – except for Wonder Woman. Afflect as The Dark Knight is cool, too. Everything else? suckie………….

    • DEADP00L

Wonder woman? Gal Gadot? Really? No just no.

  • Suave

    That’s perfect casting

  • Stupid.

    Stupid.

  • Redjester

Although this is perfect casting, the fact is that Jason Momoa would have been perfect casting for any number of Marvel/DC roles. He’s just got that look.

  • Grendal Sven

As much as I love this choice for Aquaman, I have to lament that Jason will forever be typecast into roles that he has so fervently tried to avoid. Which is one of the reasons he turned down GOTG. This will keep him in the spotlight though, and hopefully he will get some of the dramatic roles that he craves.

  • MJ

Horrible casting move. Dude is way to large and muscular to play this graceful fish-man character. Way too large!

  • http://www.discogs.com/ AdamShitwood

I’ve got a scoop; The Avengers come in a post credits scene and they all have a huge circle jerk because fuck it this is the internet every thing is news.

  • brNdon

From what I read about the script, this sounds about right.
