Surely by now you’ve heard of that terrifying trend that’s been going around involving people dressing up as killer clowns and scaring the shit out of others. If you haven’t experienced this first hand, be thankful ... the people who have are reaching their limits. Thankfully, there’s a real-life superhero who emerged from the darkness to battle this menace — and his name is Batman.

According to local BBC affiliate BBC Cumbria, Superhero Cumbria, a costume company located in the U.K. community, heard that children were having nightmares because of this growing clown phenomenon. So they decided to hire one of their workers to dress up as the Dark Knight and patrol the streets of Whitehaven to put them—and, frankly, adults as well—at ease.

“We heard a lot of reports of kids being scared and not wanting to go to sleep, and Batman is what a lot of kids look up to,” a rep for the company told BBC Cumbria. “So we thought it was only in our duty to try and prove to the little ones that it is safe and Batman is out there looking for these clowns.”

Pranksters scaring people while dressed as creepy clowns have been legitimate problems. The U.K.’s News & Star newspaper reports dozens of incidents in Cumbria alone, but America has also been facing our share of appearances. They seem to have begun somewhere in Greenville, South Carolina, where there were “suspicious clowns” attempting to “lure children into the woods,” according to NPR. Since then, there’ve been sightings in Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maryland, California, Texas, and more. Some arrests have been made, but with Halloween around the corner, there’s no telling when this trend might stop.

At least we know Batman is on the case.
